The reconstruction method involves the rehydration of the products of LDH calcination. The co-precipitation method involves the addition of a base to solutions containing a mixture of the MII and MIII ions found in the metallic layers of an LDH. The intercalated compounds were then compounded with flexible grade PVC to see if these compounds had any effect on the heat stability of the PVC. Complete intercalation of these stabilisers did not occur; however layered double hydroxides did form for almost every synthesis. The organic acids that were to be intercalated were also present in every synthesised stabiliser. Neat hydrotalcite was the best overall stabiliser with an early stability time of 32.40 min and a final or long term stability time of 106.51 min. The best modified layered double hydroxide (LDH) in terms of early stability was 4-hydroxybenzoic acid + HTC synthesised with the reconstruction method. This stabiliser had an early stability time of 25.40 min. The best performing modified stabiliser in terms of late stability was salicylic acid + HTC synthesised with the co-precipitation method. This stabiliser had a late stability time of 71.32 min. The highly activating nature of the hydroxyl substituent group should make hydrotalcites intercalated with hydroxybenzoic acids good free radical scavengers. The substituent group positions that give the best PVC heat stability are the ortho and para positions. The pKa 2 value for an organic acid may be used as a selection parameter for intercalation into hydrotalcite. If a high pKa 2 value organic acid is intercalated into hydrotalcite, the resulting compound will have good PVC heat stabilisation properties.

Book excerpt: Layered double hydroxides are one of the variety of names given to a family of layered materials first discovered in Sweden in 1842. These materials are interesting because their layer cations can be changed among a wide selection, and the interlayer anion can also be (nearly) freely chosen. Like cationic clays, they can be pillared and can exchange interlayer species -- thus increasing applications and making new routes to derivatives. The principle areas of application include catalyst support, anion scavengers, polymer stabilisers, and antacids. In the last several years, reviews and studies of LDHs have dealt with these uses. This book aims to update the current body of LDH knowledge from a wide array of views. The first section addresses the synthesis and physiochemical characterisation of these materials, and section two focuses on the applications of LDHs.

Book excerpt: The potential of magnesium hydroxide, hydromagnesite and layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as heat stabilisers and flame retardants for plasticised poly (vinylchloride) (PVC) was studied. These inorganic hydrated fillers feature flake-shaped particles with a strong tendency to agglomerate. Filler particles must be homogeneously distributed and individually dispersed in the polymer matrix in order to attain the best performance. For this reason the first step in the investigation was to explore the use of a stearic acid coating in order to improve the dispersability of these fillers in liquids. The platelet morphology-type flame retardants were coated with approximately a monolayer of stearic acid using a solvent technique. Compared to the uncoated powders, the BET surface area was lower, the powder packing density was improved, and the thickening effect on white oil was significantly reduced. The latter two observations were rationalised in terms of a reduction in the attractive interactions between the powder particles. The viscosity of white oil slurries containing 25 wt.% solids showed shear-thinning non-Newtonian behaviour. The coated powders showed significantly lower viscosities at low shear rates although the difference diminished at high shear rates. The lower viscosities shown by the coated powders indicate that the surface modification facilitated the break-up of agglomerates and aided the dispersion of individual particles in the fluid. The thermal decomposition of these hydrated fillers is central to their flame retardant action. At elevated temperatures they endothermically release inert gases. The latter dilute the atmosphere surrounding the burning sample while the endothermic decomposition cools the substrate. These two effects are responsible for the flame retardant action of these fillers. The detailed behaviour of the present samples was studied using thermogravimetric analysis and spectroscopic methods.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been considerable interest in the use of synthetic hydrotalcites as stabilisers for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Hydrotalcites are essentially hydrated magnesium-aluminium-hydroxy-carbonates: a typical formula being Mg6Al2(OH)16CO3.4H2O. Substitution of a divalent by a trivalent cation in the brucite structure creates a positive charge that needs to be counterbalanced by the presence of an anion, and this is usually carbonate. Hence, hydrotalcites are anionic clays, as opposed to the more common montmorillonite-like clays or so called cationic clays. These double-layered hydroxides have the capacity to undergo anion exchange reactions and so the carbonate can be substituted for other anions such as chloride, sulphate or nitrate. The characteristic of anion exchange means that, commercially, synthetic hydrotalcites are used for catalysis, ion scavenging, purification processes and the stabilisation of PVC formulations. This thesis present result of a project to synthesise and modify hydrotalcites to produce ultra-fine particles in recognition of the fact that the benefits of hydrotalcite could be enhanced with smaller particle sizes. The work has proceeded via two routes: firstly, by experiments to modify and intercalate the hydrotalcite with a surfactant in a way analogous to that used to montmorillonite clays, and secondly by novel synthesis methods. Two different synthesis reactions were used: one based on Urea and the second by a controlled pH method. Different drying technologies were used to obtain the optimum particle morphology and size. It was found that ultra-fine hydrotalcite particles gave an improvement in PVC thermal stability, although addition of higher levels of the hydrotalcites caused a reversal in this trend. The Haake Rheometer was used extensively to study the behaviour of the polymer clay nanocomposite formulations and to investigate the pros and cons of the addition of nanometre particles. Further work using an autoclave has resulted in particles of nanometre-sized dimensions with enhanced crystallinity and very high surface area which are promising for future work on PVC clay nanocomposites.
