Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We created this book to help every person who is not a lawyer but thinks they need one. We wanted to arm the reader with practical knowledge and questions to ask their prospective attorneys. To achieve this we gathered some of the best lawyers in Kansas City, Missouri in areas of personal injury, family law, criminal law, employment law, tax law, bankruptcy, etc. We asked these lawyers to put themselves in the place of their clients and write a chapter giving an overview of the types of claims that each potential client could have. This book is meant to answer the questions of "Do I need a lawyer?" and "How can I tell if I hired the right lawyer?" We hope you find this book helpful for any legal problem you may face in Kansas or Missouri. Good luck!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Required to sign away their legal rights as authors as a condition of employment, professional writers may earn a tidy living for their work, but they seldom own their writing. Writing for Hire traces the history of labor relations that defined authorship in film, TV, and advertising in the mid-twentieth century. Catherine L. Fisk examines why strikingly different norms of attribution emerged in these overlapping industries, and she shows how unionizing enabled Hollywood writers to win many authorial rights, while Madison Avenue writers achieved no equivalent recognition. In the 1930s, the practice of employing teams of writers to create copyrighted works became widespread in film studios, radio networks, and ad agencies. Sometimes Hollywood and Madison Avenue employed the same people. Yet the two industries diverged in a crucial way in the 1930s, when screenwriters formed the Writers Guild to represent them in collective negotiations with media companies. Writers Guild members believed they shared the same status as literary authors and fought to have their names attached to their work. They gained binding legal norms relating to ownership and public recognition—norms that eventually carried over into the professional culture of TV production. In advertising, by contrast, no formal norms of public attribution developed. Although some ad writers chafed at their anonymity, their nonunion workplace provided no institutional framework to channel their demands for change. Instead, many rationalized their invisibility as creative workers by embracing a self-conception as well-compensated professionals devoted to the interests of clients.

Some are directly stated in federal or state statutes and regulations, some are interpreted or derived from statutes, and others are rules of common law. In the public sector, other rules derive from the federal and state constitutions. This book covers the law of recruitment and selection as it applies to North Carolina local government and community college employers. The book will also benefit mental health authorities, water and sewer authorities, public health authorities, local ABC boards, and Councils of Government. Initial chapters of the book survey the various rules that comprise the law of hiring for public employers. Later chapters look more closely at the different stages of the hiring process. Although the book primarily focuses on how laws impact North Carolina local governments, it also covers these federal laws applicable to other states: -Fair Credit Reporting Act -Immigration Reform and Control Act -Americans with Disabilities Act -Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act -federal anti-discrimination laws -Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) The book includes an index of cases, an index of statutes, a subject index, and five appendixes related to small employers, affirmative action, validation of employment selection devices, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the EEOC.

In companies of any size staff in multiple jurisdictions, personnel officers and their lawyers are regularly confronted with a bewildering array of foreign rules and regulations whenever a hiring or firing decision must be made. This immensely valuable, easy-to-use handbook makes sense of it all by providing the clear, uncomplicated basic information that management and lawyers need to proceed quickly to make confident decisions and avoid unnecessary risk. A team of experienced lawyers, each with expertise in his or her own jurisdiction, has been brought together by the Multinational Association of Independent Law Firms (Multilaw) across over 70 global jurisdictions, to provide a comprehensive overview of how labour and industrial law works worldwide. With access to over 5,000 lawyers worldwide, the network is ideally positioned to offer local know-how and qualified labour & employment expertise wherever and whenever needed. Particular emphasis has been given to the following crucial areas: sources of employment law; types of employment agreements; mandatory requirements relating to hours, earnings, holidays, age, disability, and pensions; training; outsourcing and subcontracting; social security contributions; discipline and grievance; harassment; discrimination; maternity and paternity provisions; termination procedures; severance payments; unemployment allowance payments; and; claims following termination. The publication makes it easy to source further detailed knowledge and specific advice to confidently manage and understand the implications of each case. The authors represent member firms of Multilaw, one of the world's leading associations of independent law firms, with 63 member firms in 49 countries.
