Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Minnesota Book Award for Novel & Short Story Poignant portrayals of life on the edge in northern Minnesota border country, from the best-selling author of These Granite Islands and Vacationland Bitter winters are nothing new in Hatchet Inlet, hard up against the ridge of the Laurentian Divide, but the advent of spring can’t thaw the community’s collective grief, lingering since a senseless tragedy the previous fall. What is different this year is what’s missing: Rauri Paar, the last private landowner in the Reserve, whose annual emergence from his remote iced-in islands marks the beginning of spring and the promise of a kinder season. The town’s residents gather at the local diner and, amid talk of spring weather, the latest gossip, roadkill, and the daily special, take bets on when Rauri will appear—or imagine what happened to him during the long and brutal winter. Retired union miner and widower Alpo Lahti is about to wed the diner’s charming and lively waitress, Sissy Pavola, but, with Rauri still unaccounted for, celebration seems premature. Alpo’s son Pete struggles to find his straight and narrow, then struggles to stay on it, and even Sissy might be having second thoughts. Weaving in and out of each other’s reach, trying hard to do their best (all the while wondering what that might be), the residents of this remote town in all their sweetness and sorrow remind us once more of the inescapable lurches of the heart and unexpected turns of our human comedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape Evolution of Continental-Scale River Systems: A Case Study of North America's Pre-Pleistocene Bell River Basin provides a detailed case study and complete analysis of this continental-scale North American paleo-river system. The book uses detrital zircon provenance data to link incision of the Grand Canyon to deposition of its erosional products in a giant drowned delta in the Labrador Sea, in the context of sedimentary source-to-sink processes and Plio-Pleistocene continental drainage changes. The case study describes the tectonic changes in this continental-scale paleo-river system, with global implications, and contrasts this system to other continental-scale river systems around the world. This book is a valuable reference for postgraduate students, academics and researchers in the fields of geology, fluvial geomorphology and other geosciences. Readers will be able to use this detailed case study to better understand the implications for how active tectonics of headwaters regions influence delta deposition in continental-scale river systems around the world. Details the landscape evolution of a continental-scale paleo-river system using detrital zircon geochronology with fluvial processes Provides a multidisciplinary case study with applications to other continental-scale river systems around the world Compares and contrasts the Bell river to the Amazon and uses these examples as analogs to discuss other systems

Book excerpt: The poetry of Doug Linder is characterized by plain speech, empathy, wit, and a penchant for taking readers to surprising places. The Idea of North brings together more than fifty poems set in the North Country (“Is it a place or is it an idea?”). Linder’s poetic imaginings wander the North from the polar-bear-prowled streets of Churchill to hot springs under Montana’s big sky, but he returns most often to the place he knows best, Minnesota’s distinctive “North Shore,” the wild lands north of Lake Superior. Many of these playful poems consider wildlife (you’ll find poems about lynx, moose, wolves and woodpeckers) and the natural world (lichens, dragonflies, northern lights), but the collection also includes poems about such diverse subjects as curling, maple syrup, taconite plants, second homes, and a gas station designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Deftly mixing deep insights and play, this is a poetry book even for people who thought they didn’t like poetry. Book Review: "Doug Linder has a most definite idea about the North, especially the area Midwesterners refer to as “The North Shore.” It’s an idea that comes from years of roaming the shores of Lake Superior, getting to know its people, towns, wildlife, and traditions—an idea rooted in sheer love for a place out “In the Middle of Nowhere.” What is the best way to preserve something amazing and beautiful? What is the best way to share it? Linder finds making poetry suitable for both; in one of his “spot of time” poems, he tells his twenty-three-year-old self to “memorize” a meeting with a lone wolf: “Remember his amber eyes, / and his leisurely lope across the snow-covered tundra.” Forty years later, he remembers how the moment pierced him, “setting [him] on fire.” Such transfers of experience fill the collection as the narrator looks for ways to pass his “sense of place” down to the next generation (and the next). “We want them to love what we love,” he admits, and happily for us, the poems in The Idea of North bring us a long way there." -- Joyce Sutphen, poet laureate of Minnesota (2011-2021) and author of Carrying Water to the Field and This Long Winter

Book excerpt: Part armchair travelogue, part guide book, this projected three-volume series—divided into the western, central, and eastern United States—will introduce readers to all 155 national forests across the country. This Land is the only comprehensive field guide that describes the natural features, wildernesses, scenic drives, campgrounds, and hiking trails of our national forests, many of which—while little known and sparsely visited—boast features as spectacular as those found in our national parks and monuments. Each entry includes logistical information about size and location, facilities, attractions, and associated wilderness areas. For about half of the forests, Robert H. Mohlenbrock has provided sidebars on the biological or geological highlights, drawn from the "This Land" column that he has written for Natural History magazine since 1984. Superbly illustrated with color photographs, botanical drawings, and maps, this book is loaded with information, clearly written, and easy to use. This volume covers national forests in: Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming

Book excerpt: A riveting portrait of the cultural struggles and political conflicts of proposed copper-nickel mines in Minnesota’s Iron Range On an unseasonably warm October afternoon in Saint Paul, hundreds of people gathered to protest the construction of a proposed copper-nickel mine in the rural northern part of their state. The crowd eagerly listened to speeches on how the project would bring long-term risks and potentially pollute the drinking water for current and future generations. A year later, another proposed mining project became the subject of a public hearing in a small town near the proposed site. But this time, local politicians and union leaders praised the mine proposal as an asset that would strengthen working-class communities in Minnesota. In many rural American communities, there is profound tension around the preservation and protection of wilderness and the need to promote and profit from natural resources. In Mining the Heartland, Erik Kojola looks at both sides of these populist movements and presents a thoughtful account of how such political struggles play out. Drawing on over a hundred ethnographic interviews with people of the region, from members of labor unions to local residents to scientists, Kojola is able to bring this complex struggle over mining to life. Focusing on both pro- and anti-mining groups, he expands upon what this conflict reveals about the way whiteness and masculinity operate among urban and rural residents, and the different ways in which class, race, and gender shape how people relate to the land. Mining the Heartland shows the negotiation and conflict between two central aspects of the state's culture and economy: outdoor recreation in the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes and the lucrative mining of the Iron Range.
