Book Synopsis Rebellious Laughter by : Joseph Boskin
Download or read book Rebellious Laughter written by Joseph Boskin and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebellious Laughter changes the way we think about the ordinary joke. Claiming that humor in America is a primary cultural weapon, Boskin surveys the multitude of joke cycles that have swept the country during the last fifty years. Dumb Blonde jokes. Elephant jokes. Jewish-American Princess jokes. Lightbulb jokes. Readers will enjoy humor from many diverse sources: whites, blacks, women, and Hispanics; conservatives and liberals; public workers and university students; the powerless and power brokers. Boskin argues that jokes provide a cultural barometer of concerns and anxieties, frequently appearing in our day-to-day language long before these issues become grist for stand-up comics.

Book Synopsis Enjoyment of Laughter by : Max Eastman
Download or read book Enjoyment of Laughter written by Max Eastman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humor at its best is a somewhat fluid and transitory element, but most books about it are illustrated with hardened old jokes from the comic papers, or classic witticisms jerked out of their context. Max Eastman, in this work, avoids this catastrophe by quoting mainly from contemporary American humor. This is not an anthology in that selections have been made with a view to making a point rather than covering the field. The purpose of Eastman's fabled work is to make the reader laugh. Since his early school days, it has seemed to him that textbooks are wrongly written in that they are conducted in a way which ignores the natural operation of the mind. As a result, the opinion is universal, and under the circumstances a fact, that in order to learn anything you have to study. Since this introduction to humor is itself near to writing a textbook, Eastman uses the very text he constructs to illustrate the manner in which textbooks should be written. Examination and classification of the kinds of humorous experience upon the basis of a theory is a science. As such, this work offers a fair chance to illustrate a method of instruction. However, the distinction between a good joke and a bad one will not prevent the reader from making bad jokes nor enable one to make good ones. There is an artistic and playful element that simply cannot be taught. Enjoyment of Laughter presents a total view of the science of laughter and draws upon some of the great American humorists to do so.

Book Synopsis Surprised by Laughter by : Terry Lindvall
Download or read book Surprised by Laughter written by Terry Lindvall and published by Thomas Nelson Inc. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprised by Laughter looks at the career and writings of C. S. Lewis and discovers a man whose life and beliefs were sustained by joy and humor. All of his life, C. S. Lewis possessed a spirit of individuality. An atheist from childhood, he became a Christian as an adult and eventually knew international acclaim as a respected theologian. He was known worldwide for his works of fiction, especially the Chronicles of Narnia; and for his books on life and faith, including Mere Christianity, A Grief Observed, and Surprised by Joy. But perhaps the most visible difference in his life was his abiding sense of humor. It was through this humor that he often reached his readers and listeners, allowing him to effectively touch so many lives. Terry Lindvall takes an in-depth look at Lewis's joyful approach toward living, dividing his study of C. S. Lewis's wit into the four origins of laughter in Uncle Screwtape's eleventh letter to a junior devil in Lewis's The Screwtape Letters: joy, fun, the joke proper, and flippancy. Lindvall writes, "One bright and compelling feature we can see, sparking in his sunlight and dancing in his moonlight, is laughter. Yet it is not too large to see at once because it inhabited all Lewis was and did." Surprised by Laughter reveals a Lewis who enjoyed the gift of laughter, and who willingly shared that gift with others in order to spread his faith.

Book excerpt: "It is precisely against the darkness of the world that comedy arises, and it is best when that is not hidden." JRRT to R. Unwin Just like Tolkien's first reviewer, academic studies have tended to overlook the presence of humour in Tolkien's work and the effect of his work to inspire humour. This volume more than compensates for this oversight.

Download or read book Once Upon a Duke written by Carina Rose and published by Tanti Baci, LLC. This book was released on 2021-05-17 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You’re a duke?” “Let me explain.” Living with a too-handsome-for-his-own-good roommate was trouble enough, but adding his royal title into the equation took it to an entirely different level. And why stop there? Toss in that Cameron Edward Alexander, Duke of Montclair, has just announced to an eager reporter that Janine Hughes was his fiancée. Granted, he’d said it in an accent that dreams were made from, but still . . . Engaged? To a duke? No way. Janine didn’t know if she should bow, curtsy, or call him Your Grace. This wasn’t in her plans. Janine wasn’t ready to be engaged to any man, much less a royal—and one she barely knew. But after hours of Cameron’s pleading (and a bit of shameless groveling), she agreed to pose as his fiancée and go to Montclair so they could do damage control. Little did they know, the wedding plans had already begun. **Once Upon a Duke is a stand-alone novel.**
