Elle couvre un champ de plus en plus vaste : professionnel (formation à travers la télévision et Internet, visioconférence, échange d'informations animées via Internet, etc.), éducatif, récréatif, ludique (TV, jeux et découvertes sur Internet, etc.), interpersonnel (WebCam, vidéo-téléphones portables, etc.). Toutes ces applications reposent sur une architecture générale décrite dans cet ouvrage. La "production" génère des signaux sources audiovisuels naturels ou synthétiques. Le codage de source numérise, met en forme et compresse ces signaux suivant des normes complexe(MPEG par exemple). Divers canaux permettent l'acheminement des signaux audiovisuels codés en source (fibre, milieu hertzien, etc.). Pour un acheminement correct, on procède à un codage de canal suivant des procédés (ou normes) variés : DAB en audio, DVB-T pour la télévision numérique terrestre, DVB-S pour les liaisons par satellites, DVB-C par câble, étalement de spectre pour communication audiovisuelle avec les mobiles, ADSL sur ligne téléphonique, etc. Ces liaisons mettent en jeu des protocoles, publics ou propriétaires, très divers, par exemple ATM ou IP évolué pour les réseaux, HIPERLAN pour les BLR, BlueTooth pour les réseaux locaux. Tous ces moyens conduisent à la restitution des signaux sources audiovisuels sur des écrans de TV ou des moniteurs PC. On constate que la technologie et les finalités de la TV et d'Internet tendent à fusionner dans en seul média support de la communication audiovisuelle. Ces différentes étapes de l'architecture sont illustrées dans l'ouvrage par des applications en plein essor : téléchargement de musique en MP3, MP4, liaisons cellulaires GSM / GPRS / UMTS, liaisons satellites à protocoles encapsulés : MPEG / IP / ATM / DVB, décodeurs propriétaires MédiaHighway et autres, streaming en MPEG-4, protocoles de streaming Windows Media et autres. Edouard Rivier est ingénieur diplomé de l'Institut polytechnique de Grenoble et Docteur ès sciences physiques. L'auteur a poursuivi l'essentiel de sa carrière, commencée à Grenoble, à la faculté de Nice-Sophia Antipolis comme enseignant-chercheur en électronique et télécommunications, ainsi que comme maître de conférences dans deux écoles supérieures d'ingénieurs.
