Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ETYMA II is an undergraduate or advanced high school textbook for English vocabulary-building. It is divided into three parts, beginning with a brief history of foreign words in English, including information on families of languages, the Indo-European relations of English, and the development of the language. This is followed by two large sections on the Latin and Greek element in English. In every section, numerous exercises help students work closely with the material. Each of the practical word-building chapters ends with a summary “what you should know” as well as adequate reviews. Complete reviews of material are included between every few chapters. Games, projects, vocabulary notes on history in words, words in contexts, odd and interesting words are included in every lesson to keep students’ interest alive, especially in the more arid chapters on the nuts and bolts of vocabulary building.

Book excerpt: If you've ever wanted to improve your ability to learn and memorize German vocabulary by 100% ... 200% ... 300% (or more) using simple skills you can learn in under an hour (or less), then this second edition of How to Learn and Memorize German Vocabulary may be the most important book you will ever read. Believe it or not, it doesn't matter if you have a good memory or not. The information in this book will teach you: * Why memory techniques are like a bicycle everyone can ride (with some minor personal adjustments). * The real reason why no one should ever be squeamish about memorization or learning a language. * Why and how some of the most famous memory skills are applicable to learning any language, especially German. * How to create a 26 "letter location" memory system based on the alphabet English speakers share with the Germans. * Sample examples that will show you exactly how and why these memory techniques and strategies work. * Unique approaches that will have you literally "tuning in" on the German language so that you can memorize its vocabulary and recall it with ease. * How to use actors, other public figures and famous pieces of artwork to help you memorize German vocabulary. * How to separate German words in the most effective manner for memorization and recall. * A simple strategy for memorizing the male, neuter and feminine genders (a process that some people consider the ultimate nightmare of language learning.) * A list of resources, including the secret to finding the absolute best dictionary to use when learning and memorizing German vocabulary. * How having a larger vocabulary will fill your travel in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) with greater freedom to explore and enjoy the sights and culture. * ... and much, much more! These techniques have been used by real language learners, most of whom previously considered themselves owners of a "bad memory" to make real strides in acquiring German. Don't worry! None of these techniques are rocket science. Frankly, if you can memorize a short email address or the name of a movie, then you can use this system to memorize a language as rich and diverse as German. Plus, everything you'll learn in this book applies to every other language that shares the same alphabet with English. And with a little imagination, the ideas are easily transferable to other alphabet systems. But there's really no time to lose. Every day that you are not using this simple vocabulary memorization system, you are literally stealing from yourself the joy of reading, speaking and knowing German as you easily expand the natural abilities of your mind.

Book excerpt: Here is an informative introduction to language: its origins in the past, its growth through history, and its present use for communication between peoples. It is at the same time a history of language, a guide to foreign tongues, and a method for learning them. It shows, through basic vocabularies, family resemblances of languages -- Teutonic, Romance, Greek -- helpful tricks of translation, key combinations of roots and phonetic patterns. It presents by common-sense methods the most helpful approach to the mastery of many languages; it condenses vocabulary to a minimum of essential words; it simplifies grammar in an entirely new way; and it teaches a language as it is actually used in everyday life.

Book excerpt: This intensive lexical builder is addressed to B1-B2 intermediate learners of German, who are already capable of reading easy German stories, and who would like to enrich (and/or refresh) their vocabulary up to the advanced level in order to approach more complex German texts. Each piece of vocabulary is embedded in at least three example sentences in order to appeal to active understanding and trigger both short-term and long-term memory. Whenever possible, different meanings of the terms or expressions concerned are also illustrated. The vocabulary lessons are interspersed with concise but essential reminders of German grammar. At the end of the book, readers are offered a bilingual, paragraph for paragraph version of one of E. T. A. Hoffmann's famous stories, namely "Rath Krespel" (1818), translated in English by J. T. Bealby (1885). In each pair of bilingual paragraphs, important words to retain or recognize are emphasized in bold or underlined. Finally, the bilingual version is followed by the original, German only text of Hoffmann's novel - which readers are advised to go through, even if by now they know the narrative - since it is essential to retrive and fully consolidate all learned German terms into their original context. This paperback comes with a free copy of the e-book version.Should you have any suggestions as to how this book can be improved, please email us at: [email protected], or visit us at www.hermeslanguagereference.wordpress.comAnd of course, as always when it comes to foreign language learning, remember to stay brave!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to help beginning and intermediate students master the vocabulary necessary to read real Latin with fluency and comprehension. It also serves as a resource for instructors and tutors. The text presents 1,425 words that allow a student to comprehend about 95 percent of all the vocabulary they will ever see in an actual Latin text. The terms found in the present book have been culled from statistical analyses of the works of more than two hundred authors in order to identify the core vocabulary. Were students to start out by learning the 25 most common words on this list, an astonishing 29 percent of all the vocabulary ever needed would be at their command. If a student masters the 300 most frequent words in this list, well over half of all the vocabulary necessary for fluent reading will be theirs. The goal of the book is to provide the student with the most efficient way to learn vocabulary. Chapters 1 and 2, in particular, are designed for drill, review, and study. The first chapter draws together all words that share the same grammatical classification. For example, all third declension neuter nouns are brought together in one place, with their definitions. By listing the vocabulary in grammatical groups, all the words that share a set of endings are assembled for the student: vocabulary and endings thus reinforce each other. Furthermore, each list of terms is broken down into groups of five words for ease in drawing up vocabulary lists to work with. Within the grammatical lists, each part of speech is preceded by an account of how the terms within are distributed. A student thus quickly learns that while there are 413 verbs that need to be mastered, well over one-third of these (157) are found in the third conjugation, while only about one per-cent (21) will be found in the fourth conjugation. With such information, independent students or instructors can prioritize their study and assignments more appropriately. In the second chapter, large parts of the vocabulary, with their attendant definitions, are regrouped by topics. A student who wishes, therefore, to focus on nature, human emotions, or military issues, will find such vocabulary conveniently grouped together. Chapter three lists the vocabulary terms from the most frequently occurring words to the least frequent. Students or instructors who wish to lean more heavily on the most (or least!) frequently occurring terms within their drills and studies can thus consult this frequency list. After the frequency list, the fourth chapter presents an alphabetical index of the terms. Two final chapters close the text. The first is a list of endings and paradigms for nouns, adjectives and verbs. Complete paradigms and endings are given for review. The final chapter provides the student with an additional one hundred words that are uniquely common in the Latin of the Middle Ages. These one hundred words, if added to the mix, would give the student a Mediaeval vocabulary that would match the efficiency of the Classical vocabulary that is the main focus of the book. For the effort of learning an additional one hundred words, another 1,000 years of Latin texts open up before the student. As a whole, then, this book offers the vocabulary that forms the core of one thousand seven hundred years of Latin literature. If the goal is to learn to read Latin with joy and ease, then the vocabulary terms in this book are one of the major keys to success. By learning these terms, a student's vocabulary should be ready to tackle the Latin of any era from the Classical period to the Renaissance.
