Book excerpt: This study aims to establish a depositional framework for an area of the Louisiana shelf, north-central Gulf of Mexico. The depositional history of the study area is poorly understood, especially within the last cycle of major eustatic fluctuation (18,000 yrs BP -- present). Data sets used in this study include pre-existing and previously unanalyzed two-dimensional, high-resolution seismic profile records (Acadiana 86 and Acadiana 89), geotechnical foundation boring data (Coleman and Roberts, 1988a), and an industry lease block survey report (Cole, 1983). Seismic sequence stratigraphic methods are employed in this study to analyze seismic profile data. Seismic sequence analysis results indicate the presence of five unconformable surfaces and five seismic facies units. Through correlation of seismic profile data with lithologic and chronologic data, it is possible to conclude that these seismic facies units represent shelf-margin deltaic deposition during the last lowstand of sea level (18,000 yrs BP), sourced by the Pearl River.

Book excerpt: Regional investigation of late Quaternary deposits on the outer Louisiana shelf indicated two principle structural provinces: (1) a western province between West Cameron and Ship Shoal Areas which is highly faulted and structurally controlled by salt tectonics; and (2) an eastern province occupying South Timbalier and Grand Isle Areas which is greatly influenced by the effects of tectonics and sedimentation associated with the Old Mississippi Canyon complex. Vertical forces due to a mobile salt layer at depth, continual basin subsidence, and the incompetence of the overlying sedimentary strata dominate the western structural province where the main locus of deposition was located during Pleistocene time. Growth faults, post-depositional faults, salt dome faults (Radial and peripheral), grabens, horsts, and collapse faults are found in the western province; movement along several of these faults is occurring at the present. In the eastern province little deformation is apparent in the late Quaternary section where thick accumulations of recent sediments are deposited. Thick regional sands are widely distributed across the outer Louisiana shelf. These sands represent fluvial-deltaic sediments that were initially deposited in a series of coalescing deltas during low stands of sea level. As sea level rose these sands were subsequently transported to the north and laterally spread across large areas. Transgressive bars formed during intermittent halts in sea level rises.

Book excerpt: High-resolution 3D seismic data were used to study the evolution of a shelf- margin minibasin located approximately 160 km off of the coast of Louisiana. Depositional packages were delineated and classified based on observed changes in internal characteristics and lapout patterns. Reconstruction of the depositional history of the minibasin reveals information relating to how depositional styles and architecture change over time in response to eustasy, sediment supply, and salt tectonics. Four shelf-margin deltas were identified and classified into two categories: unstable fluvial-dominated deltas, and stable wave-dominated deltas. Slope failure driven by continued uplift of two salt diapirs bounding the study area on both the eastern and western flanks caused numerous mass-transport complexes to redeposit sediment throughout the minibasin. Slope channels contained within the deltaic packages erode into the underlying substrate, and functioned as a shelf to slope sediment bypass mechanism. Deltaic packages are sometimes capped by muddy transgressive wedges. Prodelta muds and hemipelagic drape deposits also fill portions of the minibasin. A sequence stratigraphic framework was used in order to relate the sediment packages to the sea-level record. Deltaic deposition occurred during lowstand periods, and accounts for the largest packages present in the minibasin. Muddy wedges were sometimes deposited during major transgressions, with high amplitude continuous sediment deposits forming during highstands. Fluvial-dominated deltas show signs of a higher sediment supply and rate, which is indicated by syndepositional internal deformation and greater sediment thicknesses. The wave-dominated deltas present are stable, with no observed deformation. The constraining effects of the minibasin in relation to the depositional styles of the deposits were also examined. In this regard when compared to their open shelf-edge counterparts, the deltas present were more likely to develop shelf to slope bypass systems in the form of slope channel complexes, regardless of wave or fluvial influence.

Book excerpt: The last decade of study of the shallow-marine boundary layer has arrived at a synthesis of sediment dynamic principles that can begin to be transferred from the time scales of the rock record (years to millenia). At the same time, the technology of petroleum exploration has lead to a fundamentally new way of examining the deposits of sedimentary basins. This book applies these insights to continental shelf and continental margin deposits, providing an entirely new viewpoint to the subject.

Earle A continuation of the landmark scientific reference series from the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, Gulf of Mexico Origin, Waters, and Biota, Volume 3, Geology provides the most up-to-date, systematic, cohesive, and comprehensive description of the geology of the Gulf of Mexico Basin. The six sections of the book address the geologic history, recent depositional environments, and processes offshore and along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Scientific research in the Gulf of Mexico region is continuous, extensive, and has broad-based influence upon scientific, governmental, and educational communities. This volume is a compilation of scientific knowledge from highly accomplished and experienced geologists who have focused most of their careers on gaining a better understanding of the geology of the Gulf of Mexico. Their research, presented in this volume, describes and explains the formation of the Gulf Basin, Holocene stratigraphic and sea-level history, energy resources, coral reefs, and depositional processes that affect and are represented along our Gulf coasts. It provides valuable synthesis and interpretation of what is known about the geology of the Gulf of Mexico. Five years in the making, this monumental compilation is both a lasting record of the current state of knowledge and the starting point for a new millennium of study.

Book excerpt: Nonrenewable energy resources, comprising fossil fuels and uranium, are not ran domly distributed within the Earth's crust. They formed in response to a complex array of geologic controls, notably the genesis of the sedimentary rocks that host most commercial energy resources. It is this genetic relationship between economic re sources and environment that forms the basis for this book. Our grouping of petro leum, coal, uranium, and ground water may appear to be incongruous or artificial. But our basic premise is that these ostensibly disparate resources share common genetic attributes and that the sedimentological principles governing their natural distributions and influencing their recovery are fundamentally similar. Our combined careers have focused on these four resources, and our experiences in projects worldwide reveal that certain recurring geologic factors are important in controlling the distribution of com mercial accumulations and subsurface fluid flow. These critical factors include the shape and stability of the receiving basin, the major depositional elements and their internal detail, and the modifications during burial that are brought about in these sediments by pressure, circulating fluids, heating, and chemical reaction. Since the first edition of this book in 1983, there has been a quantum leap in the volume of literature devoted to genetic stratigraphy and refinement of sedimentologi cal principles and a commensurate increase in the application of these concepts to resource exploration and development.
