These are unusual times. What has altered in your life or the lives of those around you? What angers you? What is better this year than in the past? What will never be the same going forward? Those were the questions asked of poets for this issue. The world is divided along several lines as we head into 2021. The pandemic is unlike anything experienced before. Tensions are running high between coworkers, educators and those they teach, neighbors, and even lifelong friends and family members. Relationships are dissolving Left and Right. The masked and unmasked glare at each other. The air we breathe and the surfaces we touch and the people we love are all potential killers. It's a plexiglass world, muffled and fogged. Family dynamics have shifted dramatically. And that which seems to be salvation-the vaccines-may not end social distancing for a very long time to come. We communicate via screens and signs and tears of longing and frustration. This will undoubtedly be the start and end of too many things. There is likely no one who doesn't know someone who was infected by the coronavirus-or killed by it. Poetry can't solve the toughest problems of society, but maybe it can offer a new perspective on them. There are off-topic poems herein, as well. Touching and funny, surprising and philosophical-they offer the chance to take a break from the stresses and strains eating into every aspect of our daily lives.

So thinkers from Plato onwards have claimed; and even today, when poetry has largely disappeared from the mainstream of popular culture, it is still commonly considered the most seductive of all forms of art. But why should this be? What are the connections between poetry and love that lead us to associate them so strongly with one another? In this study Erik Gray draws on a broad range of Western thought and poetry to reveal the qualities and structures that love and poetry share. Above all, he argues, both are founded on paradox. Love is at once necessarily public (because interpersonal) and intensely private; hence love both requires expression and resists it. Likewise the experience of love is simultaneously surprising and familiar, singular and conventional. In poetry, especially lyric poetry - which is similarly both dependent on and resistant to language, both exceptionally regular and exceptionally irregular - love finds a natural outlet. The Art of Love Poetry illuminates many of the recurrent tropes that poets across the centuries have employed to represent and express love, exploring such topics as the poetic kiss, the lyric of conjugal love, and the role of animals in love poetry. In describing the inherent erotics of poetry, it offers new insights not only into the long tradition of love lyric but into the nature of love itself.

Beginning in 1931, the correspondence was tutelary but it quickly grew into a collaborative enterprise of emotional and artistic significance for both poets. This volume presents Niedecker's side of the correspondence. It opens with a substantial introduction tracing the life and work of Niedecker and how her relationship with Zukofsky influenced her poetry. At the same time Jenny Penberthy attempts to disengage Niedecker from her own myth of Zukofsky. She examines the emergence of Niedecker's quiet but rigorously experimental poetry: her rejection of hierarchies of genre, structure, and syntax, and her questioning of relationships among author, world, and text. Penberthy also reconstructs the early years of Niedecker's career, looking particularly at her surrealism and its impact on her poems. The book is not only about the impact Zukofsky had on Niedecker's work, it is also about a woman poet's struggle for recognition both within and without.
