Buffalo Bill was of the most famous and well-known figures of the American Old West. His legend began to spread when he was only 23. Shortly thereafter he started performing in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. In authors words the reason for writing this biography were twofold. Primarily, her intention was to provide an authentic biography of her brother in response to many books of varying value that have been published. The second reason was purely personal. Helen wanted to share with readers who Bill was personally and to present his true personality. _x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ The Old Homestead in Iowa_x000D_ Will's First Indian_x000D_ The Shadow of Partisan Strife_x000D_ Persecution Continues_x000D_ The "Boy Extra"_x000D_ Family Defender and Household Tease_x000D_ Indian Encounter and School-day Incidents_x000D_ Death and Burial of Turk_x000D_ Will as Pony Express Rider_x000D_ Echoes From Sumter_x000D_ A Short but Dashing Indian Campaign_x000D_ The Mother's Last Illness_x000D_ In the Secret-service_x000D_ Will as a Benedict_x000D_ How the Sobriquet of "Buffalo Bill" Was Won_x000D_ Satanta, Chief of the Kiowas_x000D_ Will Made Chief of Scouts_x000D_ Army Life at Fort M'pherson_x000D_ Pa-has-ka, the Long-haired Chief_x000D_ The Hunt of the Grand Duke Alexis_x000D_ Theatrical Experiences_x000D_ The Government's Indian Policy_x000D_ Literary Work_x000D_ First Visit to the Valley of the Big Horn_x000D_ Tour of Great Britain_x000D_ Return of the "Wild West" to America_x000D_ A Tribute to General Miles_x000D_ The "Wild West" at the World's Fair_x000D_ Cody Day at the Omaha Exposition_x000D_ The Last of the Great Scouts_x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_

Cody, known to millions for over a century as the legendary Buffalo Bill. Born in a log cabin in Iowa, he was a buffalo hunter, stagecoach driver, Pony Express rider, Civil War soldier, and a scout for the U.S. army before beginning his career as the star of Buffalo Bill?s Wild West, which electrified audiences around the world from 1883 to 1917. ø Bill?s sister, Helen Cody Wetmore, has written an affectionate biography that recalls fully both the man and the legend, his colorful personality and ironic wit, as well as his celebrated international status. Some of her anecdotes read like the dime novels they were probably based on, but others provide fascinating glimpses of frontier life. Before becoming a showman, Cody tried his luck as a land speculator, a hotelkeeper, and a justice of the peace. These pages also show the author herself growing up on the wild frontier. Humorous and informative, Buffalo Bill introduces us to an unforgettable and controversial figure in American frontier history. ø This commemorative edition includes the full text of the original 1899 edition, a foreword and afterword by novelist Zane Grey, illustrations by Frederic Remington, E. W. Deming, and Rosa Bonheur from a rare 1903 edition, and an introduction by scholar Joy S. Kasson.

Book excerpt: Late in 1937 Hugh Alexander, a kid fresh out of small-town Oklahoma, had just finished his second year playing outfield for the Cleveland Indians when an oil rig accident ripped off his left hand. Within three months he was back with the Indians, but this time as a scout--the youngest ever in Major League history. In the next six decades he signed more players who made it to the Majors than any other scout. His story, Baseball's Last Great Scout, reads like a backroom, bleacher-seat history of twentieth-century baseball--and a primer on what it takes to find a winner. It gives a gritty picture of learning the business on the road, from American Legion field to try-out camp to beer joint, and making the fine distinctions between "performance" and "tools of the trade" when checking out prospects. Over the years Alexander worked for the Indians, the White Sox, the LA Dodgers, the Phillies, and the Cubs--and signed the likes of Allie Reynolds, Don Sutton, and Marty Bystrom. This book, based on extensive interviews and Alexander's journals, is filled with memorable characters, pithy lessons, snapshots of American life, and a big picture of America's pastime from one of its great off-the-field players.

Full of adventures and stories that the great man engaged in as he roamed the Wild West. It is a view perhaps not entirely in keeping with his true role in history but legends are hard to replace with reality. Here we publish his biography written by his sister. How accurate it is certainly up for debate but it's an excellent example of a man writ large.

(Buffalo Bill) Cody was active on the frontier for only about a dozen years (1860-1872); for the next thirty-five he was an actor and a showman. But today, more than a half century after his death, the Buffalo Bill legend is as strong as ever. First published in 1899, this artless and affectionate biography by his sister evokes both the man and the legend. In addition to giving a full account of Bill's early years, Helen Cody Wetmore offers some interesting sidelights on his adult life - for example, his experiences as a Union Army spy, a land speculator, a hotelkeeper, and a justice of the peace. (Called upon to perform a marriage ceremony, Cody concluded it with the impressive words: "whom God and Buffalo Bill hath joined together, let no man put asunder.") Here are glimpses of Bill as a host to visiting potentates and chapters on "Theatrical Experiences" and "Literary Works" which are not only funny in themselves but convincing evidence that he was never taken in by his own publicity. As a period piece, "Buffalo Bill" is loaded with passages that today's readers will find hilarious, but more than that it is informative and entertaining on its own terms. Wetmore is dead right in her conclusion that Bill Cody gained his strong hold on American hearts because "in his own person he condenses a period of the history of this nation."
