La formation du couple passe souvent par plusieurs phases d'expérimentation. La venue de l'enfant a tendance à être de plus en plus retardée. Il en résulte une individualisation croissante des manières de " passer sa jeunesse " puisque les profils de cheminement vers la vie adulte sont variés. L'individualisation des parcours n'efface cependant pas certains traits communs à la jeunesse actuelle. Les jeunes québécois, même si leur nombre ne cesse de diminuer, sont au cœur d'un changement socioculturel. La remise en question des héritages antérieurs en constitue un élément-clé : les changements structurels issus de la Révolution tranquille, les relations sociales, en particulier au sein de la famille et au contact d'autres cultures par l'immigration ou la migration. Par l'adhésion à de nouveaux repères, les jeunes contemporains contribuent à la redéfinition des valeurs et des engagements qui annoncent déjà l'ampleur que prendra cette nouvelle culture. Loin de faire d'eux un sujet passif, les mutations en cours en font un témoin et un acteur Lie premier plan.
