Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical and Biochemical Applications of Lasers aims to give a general introduction to as well as an evaluation of the successful application of lasers in various areas, especially in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. The book begins with a basic knowledge of general laser physics and the types of lasers, then moves on to more specific topics that include the Raman spectra of biological materials; laser spectroscopy of gas phase ions; and optical analogs of magnetic spectroscopy. The text also discusses the molecular beams; the energy flow in polyatomic molecules; and the different properties of molecules in relation to electronical excitation and quasi-electric light scattering. Studies of different chemical reactions are also included. The text is recommended for chemists, biochemists, and chemical physicists who want to know more about lasers and its applications to their respective fields. The book will also be helpful for those concerned with the chemical reactions lasers can bring about and for those who want to conduct further studies regarding laser uses.

Book excerpt: Laser Processing and Chemistry gives an overview of the fundamentals and applications of laser-matter interactions, in particular with regard to laser material processing. Special attention is given to laser-induced physical and chemical processes at gas-solid, liquid-solid, and solid-solid interfaces. Starting with the background physics, the book proceeds to examine applications of laser techniques in micro-machining, and the patterning, coating, and modification of material surfaces. This third edition has been revised and enlarged to cover new topics such as the synthesis of nanoclusters and nanocrystalline films, ultrashort-pulse laser processing, laser polishing, cleaning, and lithography.Graduate students, physicists, chemists, engineers, and manufacturers alike will find this book an invaluable reference work on laser processing.

This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lecture notes book presents how enhanced structural information of biomolecular ions can be obtained from interaction with photons of specific frequency - laser light. The methods described in the book "Laser photodissociation and spectroscopy of mass-separated biomolecular ions" make use of the fact that the discrete energy and fast time scale of photoexcitation can provide more control in ion activation. This activation is the crucial process producing structure-informative product ions that cannot be generated with more conventional heating methods, such as collisional activation. The book describes how the powerful separation capabilities and sensitivity of mass spectrometry (MS) can be combined with the structural insights from spectroscopy by measuring vibrational and electronic spectra of trapped analytes. The implementation of laser-based photodissociation techniques in MS requires basic knowledge of tunable light sources and ion trapping devices. This book introduces the reader to key concepts and approaches in molecular spectroscopy, and the light sources and ion traps employed in such experiments. The power of the methods is demonstrated by spectroscopic interrogation of a range of important biomolecular systems, including peptides, proteins, and saccharides, with laser light in the ultraviolet-visible, and infrared range. The book "Laser photodissociation and spectroscopy of mass-separated biomolecular ions" is an indispensable resource for students and researchers engaged or interested in this emerging field. It provides the solid background of key concepts and technologies for the measurements, discusses state-of-the-art experiments, and provides an outlook on future developments and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact which has been made on spectroscopy by lasers, and by this route on major segments of physics and chemistry, has received ample documen tation in the past several years. Two principal themes emerge from examina tion of the numerous books and monographs now available on this subject: first, an increase in spectral resolution to levels previously undreamed of; and, second, the generation of nonlinear phenomena as a result of the intense radiation fields available from laser devices. There is one additional property of laser radiation which, although used extensively in experiments, does not appear to have been as thoroughly reviewed as the foregoing aspects. This is the spatial and temporal coherence of the radiation field produced by the laser, which makes possible the coherent excitation of molecular energy states. This feature is the subject of the present volume. While the use of coherence methods in spectroscopy has been paced by lasers, it is by no me ans restricted to this technology. In the second and fourth chapters, microwave sources are discussed as generators of coherent radiation fields and are used to probe both rotational energy levels and spin states of electronically excited molecules. The phenomena discussed in this book, such as nutation, free induction decay, radiative echoes, rapid pas sage, and so forth, are really the same in different regions of the spectrum, and themselves echo from one chapter to the next.
