Book excerpt: This book describes the technology and uses of high-energy laser and particle-beam weapons both on the battlefield and in strategic defense against nuclear attack. Technical issues covered include high-energy lasers, particle beams, x-ray lasers, microwaves, pointing and tracking systems, beam delivery, reliability, and atmospheric effect on beams. Potential missions covered include missile defense, anti-satellite weapons, aircraft use, and battlefield weapons. This book also covers the Reagan administration's "Star Wars" program, prospects for development of practical beam weapons, and their implications for military strategy and global policy.
Book Synopsis Accelerators for Heavy Ion Fusion by :
Download or read book Accelerators for Heavy Ion Fusion written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large fusion devices will almost certainly produce net energy. However, a successful commercial fusion energy system must also satisfy important engineering and economic constraints. Inertial confinement fusion power plants driven by multi-stage, heavy-ion accelerators appear capable of meeting these constraints. The reasons behind this promising outlook for heavy-ion fusion are given in this report. This report is based on the transcript of a talk presented at the Symposium on Lasers and Particle Beams for Fusion and Strategic Defense at the University of Rochester on April 17-19, 1985.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beam Weapons describes the roots of Ronald Reagan's 'Star Wars' quest for a strategic defense system to intercept and destroy nuclear ballistic missiles before they could reach their targets. The goal was to develop radically new beam weapons that destroyed nuclear missiles with directed energy - laser beams or charged particles. The daring program was born at a time of intense technological optimism, when NASA talked of weekly space shuttle flights. Pentagon planners envisioned a fleet of orbiting laser battle stations that could blast thousands of nuclear missiles out of the sky. Critics dubbed the plan an impossible 'Star Wars' fantasy. The controversy quickly grew heated. In Beam Weapons, Jeff Hecht focuses on the core technical issues. He tells how lasers and particle beams work, explains what is needed for effective missile defense, and carefully analyzes the feasibility of proposed systems. More than 30 years later, the Cold War is history, but the technology Reagan sought remains beyond the state of the art. Originally published as Beam Weapons: The Next Arms Race in 1984, the book has a new subtitle to reflect its historical import. A new epilogue recalls key events of the intervening decades, and describes the Pentagon's new generation of more modest laser weapons.
Book Synopsis RF Accelerators for Fusion and Strategic Defense by :

Book excerpt: RF linacs have a place in fusion, either in an auxiliary role for materials testing or for direct drivers in heavy-ion fusion. For SDI, the particle-beam technology is an attractive candidate for discrimination missions and also for lethality missions. The free-electron laser is also a forerunner among the laser candidates. in many ways, there is less physics development required for these devices and there is an existing high-power technology. But in all of these technologies, in order to scale them up and then space-base them, there is an enormous amount of work yet to be done.

Book Synopsis Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology by : P. Misaelides

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of advanced materials with preselected properties is one of the main goals of materials research. Of especial interest are electronics, high-temperature and supemard materials for various applications, as well as alloys with improved wear, corrosion and mechanical resistance properties. The technical challenge connected with the production of these materials is not only associated with the development of new specialised preparation techniques but also with quality control. The energetic charged particle, electron and photon beams offer the possibility of modifying the properties of the near-surface regions of materials without seriously affecting their bulk, and provide unique analytical tools for testing their qUality. This volume includes most of the lectures and contributions delivered at the NATO-funded Advanced Study Institute "Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology", which was held in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, in Northern Greece, from the 8th to the 21st of May, 1994 and attended by 73 participants from 21 countries. The aim of this ASI was to provide to the participants an overview of this rapidly expanding field. Fundamental aspects concerning the interactions and collisions on atomic, nuclear and solid state scale were presented in a didactic way, along with the application of a variety of techniques for the solution of problems ranging from the development of electronics materials to corrosion research and from archaeometry to environmental protection.

Book Synopsis Progress in Lasers and Laser Fusion by : Behram Kursunoglu
Download or read book Progress in Lasers and Laser Fusion written by Behram Kursunoglu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a portion of the presentations given at the session on Laser-Fusion and Laser Develop ment of Orbis Scientiae II, held at the Center for Theoretical Studies, University of Miami, from January 20 through January 24, 1975. This second in the new series of meetings held at the CTS strove to implement the goals professed in the organization of Orbis Scientiae in 1974, namely to encourage scientists in several disci plines to exchange views, not only with colleagues who share similar research interests, but also to acquaint scientists in other fields with the leading ideas and current results in each area represented. Thus, an effort has been made to include papers in each session that discuss fundamental issues in a way which is com prehensible to scientists who are specialists in other areas. Also in keeping with the philosophy of Orbis Scientiae, the major topics each year are to be varied, with the invariant being the inclusion of developments in fundamental physics. The discussions of the current state of the art in lasers and fusion represented in this volume are not only of interest because they deal with newly unfolding branches of physics, but also because of their potential technological and societal significance. The paper by v. N. Lugovoi and A. M. Prokhorov was not presented at Orbis Scientiae II, but is included because of its relevance to the topics in this volume.
