Book excerpt: The terms Laser Ultrasonics (LU) and Laser based Ultrasonics (LBU) relate to a range of testing and measurement configurations that employ lasers both to generate and to detect ultrasonic signals at the surface of opaque materials or in the bulk of transparent media. The ability to perform ultrasonic measurements in a remote and non-contacting manner using laser methods has produced significant interest in this measurement technology from a range of users. Numerous demonstrations of the technology in university, government and industrial laboratories have shown the flexibility and promise of laser ultrasonics and have pointed to its potential limitations. Unlike conventional ultrasonic methods which have experienced broad use in a variety of applications (industrial quality control, materials process sensing, medical imaging, infrastructure inspection), laser based methods have been used primarily in research programs and in technology demonstrations. Unfortunately, even with successful demonstrations, the use of laser ultrasonics outside the research environment has not occurred. In part, the movement of this technology to broader application has been limited by the nature of laser ultrasonic technology development.

Book excerpt: Laser ultrasonics can be used to nondestructively evaluate structures to determine the existence and location of surface and interior flaws. The goal of this research was to determine if laser ultrasonic techniques can be applied to the inspection of aluminum plate. titanium tubes, and large welded plate structures. The research was carried out with a Q-switched pulsed ruby laser emitting light of 694 nm wavelength. Ultrasonic waves were experimentally generated and recorded in the aluminum plate and the titanium tube. A comprehensive literature study was completed to determine if the technique can be applied to welded structures. For the two experimental cases, the ultrasonic waves were received by a piezoelectric pinducer which was located on the opposite side of the plate. and on the outside of the tube. A digital oscilloscope captured the signals from the pinducer. The signals were then analyzed to determine echo spacing and frequency content. The physical characteristics of the laser pulse such as the energy and full-width-half-height and amplitudes were measured via a photodiode system and a calorimeter. The aluminum plate confirmed that the system was functioning properly, as the ultrasonic echoes that were generated matched the expected results from previous experimentation. The titanium tube data turned out to be difficult to interpret due to the complex geometry and mode conversion. The welding research showed that ultrasound can be used to identify many types of flaws in a welded joint. Currently, few researchers have applied the laser based ultrasound to flaw detection in finished welds, although several have looked at using the laser ultrasound as an input to a control system for a weld in progress. The literature research uncovered the need for further studies on the application of laser based ultrasound to flaw detection in completed welds.

Book excerpt: Laser-ultrasonics refers to a range of technologies involving the use of laser electrooptical systems both to generate and to detect ultrasonic signals in and on materials and structures. Such systems have been developed to permit classical ultrasonic measurements for materials characterization and defect identification and measurement. From the point of view of one concerned with practical applications of ultrasonic inspection and measurement methods, laser-ultrasonic systems offer the flexibility which, in principle, should permit remote ultrasonic measurements to be performed on objects at elevated temperatures or in hostile environments. Laser-ultrasonic systems can be designed and constructed with extremely wide and flat detection bandwidth so that ultrasonic vibrational displacements can be recorded with high fidelity. In addition, there is no mechanical loading of the surface to damp, absorb, or otherwise distort the propagating acoustic energy. This feature has been used to great advantage in performing ultrasonic measurements in thin plates and films. In spite of the great advantages offered by laser-ultrasonics, there are severe limitations which restrict its application. In fact, based upon the performance of current state-of-the-art laser-ultrasonic systems, it is almost always more advantageous to use conventional ultrasonic transduction methods, if possible for a given application, than it is to apply laser-ultrasonics. In short, the main reason leading to this conclusion is the poor system detection sensitivity of laser-ultrasonic systems compared with piezoelectric transducer systems. The ramifications of this limited sensitivity are many.

Book excerpt: Ultrasonic methods have been very popular in nondestructive testing and characterization of materials. This book deals with both industrial ultrasound and medical ultrasound. The advantages of ultrasound include flexibility, low cost, in-line operation, and providing data in both signal and image formats for further analysis. The book devotes 11 chapters to ultrasonic methods. However, ultrasonic methods can be much less effective with some applications. So the book also has 14 chapters catering to other or advanced methods for nondestructive testing or material characterization. Topics like structural health monitoring, Terahertz methods, X-ray and thermography methods are presented. Besides different sensors for nondestructive testing, the book places much emphasis on signal/image processing and pattern recognition of the signals acquired.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written at an intermediate level in a way that is easy to understand, Fundamentals and Applications of Ultrasonic Waves, Second Edition provides an up-to-date exposition of ultrasonics and some of its main applications. Designed specifically for newcomers to the field, this fully updated second edition emphasizes underlying physical concepts over mathematics. The first half covers the fundamentals of ultrasonic waves for isotropic media. Starting with bulk liquid and solid media, discussion extends to surface and plate effects, at which point the author introduces new modes such as Rayleigh and Lamb waves. This focus on only isotropic media simplifies the usually complex mathematics involved, enabling a clearer understanding of the underlying physics to avoid the complicated tensorial description characteristic of crystalline media. The second part of the book addresses a broad spectrum of industrial and research applications, including quartz crystal resonators, surface acoustic wave devices, MEMS and microacoustics, and acoustic sensors. It also provides a broad discussion on the use of ultrasonics for non-destructive evaluation. The author concentrates on the developing area of microacoustics, including exciting new work on the use of probe microscopy techniques in nanotechnology. Focusing on the physics of acoustic waves, as well as their propagation, technology, and applications, this book addresses viscoelasticity, as well as new concepts in acoustic microscopy. It updates coverage of ultrasonics in nature and developments in sonoluminescence, and it also compares new technologies, including use of atomic force acoustic microscopy and lasers. Highlighting both direct and indirect applications for readers working in neighboring disciplines, the author presents particularly important sections on the use of microacoustics and acoustic nanoprobes in next-generation devices and instruments.
