Book excerpt: This volume contains the formal record of the lectures presented at the 9th Course of the International School of Radiation Damage and Protection held at the "E . Majorana" International Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice (Italy) from May 9 to May 20, 1989. This course was the last of a series of 4 courses, started in 1981, that were dedicated to the assessment of risk hazard from non-ionizing radiation. The proceedings of these courses were all published by Plenum Press with the following headings: 1) M. Grandolfo, S. M. Michaelson and A. Rindi, Eds. : "Biological Effects and Dosimetry of Nonionizing Radiation; Radiofrequency and Microwave Energy", Plenum Press, New York, NATO ASI Series A Life Sciences, Vo1. 49 (1983); 2) M. Grandolfo, S. M. Michaelson and A. Rindi, Eds. : "Biological Effects and Dosimetry of Static and ELF Electromagnetic Fields", Plenum Press, New York, E. Majorana International Science Series, Life Sciences, Vol. 19 (1985) ; 3) M. H. Repacholi, M. Grandolfo and A. Rindi, Eds. : "Ultrasound; medical applications, biological effects and hazard potential", Plenum Press, New York (1987). We hope that all these volumes together may represent a complete textbook and a reference for the students and scientists interested in the physics, biology, measurement and dosimetry, health effects and standard setting, in short, the risk assessment of that wide field of radiation presently classified as non-ionizing radiation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The output of pulsed lasers may be measured with reasonable accuracy by modifications of established radiometric methods. The receiver, thermopile or phototube, is used ballistically. It is calibrated by an incandescent-lamp standard of spectral irradiance. The laser beam is attenuated to make its irradiation on the receiver comparable to that from the calibrating source. Attenuation is accomplished by intercepting the entire laser beam on a diffusely reflecting surface. The attenuation factor is determined from direct measurement of the reflectance of this diffusing surface and the geometric constants of the system. The accuracy of the measurement of laser output is dependent upon the accuracy of calibration of the standard of spectral irradiance and the accuracy with which the spectral sensitivity of the receiver, the spectral transmittance of the band-pass filters, and the reflectance of the diffuser can be determined. Measurements made with different photoelectric receivers agree to about 1.5% using a 1/4-joule pulsed ruby laser as a source. Total uncertainty is estimated to be about 5%. Measurements made using these radiometric methods have been compared with calorimetric measurements and a discrepancy of 9% was observed. (Author.

Book excerpt: A system to make ultra wideband measurements of fast laser pulses and their induced target interactions at a distance of approximately 38 m from the target location is discussed. The system has demonstrated an overall bandwidth of 3 GHz with projected unfolding to 4 GHz. This system allows high resolution temporal history diagnostics in a remote location providing high EMI and radiation immunity.

Medical Physics covers the applied branch of physics concerned with the application of concepts and methods of physics to diagnostics and therapeutics of human diseases. This second volume in a series of two complements the imaging modalities presented in the first volume by those methods, which use ionizing radiation. The first chapters in part A on Radiography provide a solid background on radiation sources, interaction of radiation with matter, and dosimetry for the safe handling of radiation before introducing x-ray radiography, scintigraphy, SPECT and PET. The second part B on Radiotherapy starts from basic information on the life cycle of cells, radiation response of healthy and tumorous cells. In subsequent chapters the main methods of radiation treatment are presented, in particular x-ray radiotherapy, proton and neutron radiation therapy, and brachytherapy. The last part C, Diagnostics and Therapeutics beyond Radiology, covers laser applications, multifunctional nanoparticles and prosthetics. The present volume introduces the physical background on ionizing radiation, the biological effectiveness of radiation, as well as radiation based methods for diagnostics and therapeutics. covers the second part of the entire field of medical physics, including imaging methods with the use of ionizing radiation; radiation therapy with photons, protons, and neutrons; laser methods, nanomedicine and prosthetics. provides an introduction for Bachelor students to the main concepts of Medical Physics during their fi rst semesters guiding them to further specialized and advanced literature. contains many questions & answers related to the content of each chapter. is also available as a set together with Volume 1. Contents Part A: Radiography X-ray generation Nuclei and isotopes Interaction of radiation with matter Radiation detection and protection X-ray radiography Scintigraphy Positron emission tomography Part B: Radiotherapy Cell cycle and cancer X-ray radiotherapy Charged particle radiotherapy Neutron radiotherapy Brachytherapy Part C: Diagnostics and therapeutics beyond radiology Laser applications in medicine Nanoparticles for nanomedical applications Prosthetics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers have a wide and growing range of applications in medicine. Lasers for Medical Applications summarises the wealth of recent research on the principles, technologies and application of lasers in diagnostics, therapy and surgery.Part one gives an overview of the use of lasers in medicine, key principles of lasers and radiation interactions with tissue. To understand the wide diversity and therefore the large possible choice of these devices for a specific diagnosis or treatment, the respective types of the laser (solid state, gas, dye, and semiconductor) are reviewed in part two. Part three describes diagnostic laser methods, for example optical coherence tomography, spectroscopy, optical biopsy, and time-resolved fluorescence polarization spectroscopy. Those methods help doctors to refine the scope of involvement of the particular body part or, for example, to specify the extent of a tumor. Part four concentrates on the therapeutic applications of laser radiation in particular branches of medicine, including ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology, urology, gynecology, otorhinolaryngology (ORL), neurology, dentistry, orthopaedic surgery and cancer therapy, as well as laser coatings of implants. The final chapter includes the safety precautions with which the staff working with laser instruments must be familiar. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, this important book summarizes international achievements in the field of laser applications in medicine in the past 50 years. It provides a valuable contribution to laser medicine by outstanding experts in medicine and engineering. - Describes the interaction of laser light with tissue - Reviews every type of laser used in medicine: solid state, gas, dye and semiconductor - Describes the use of lasers for diagnostics
