Book excerpt: While it is not feasible to predict where important scientific advances will take place, it seems reasonable to anticipate that lasers will have a major role in military forces by the end of this century, and perhaps well before that if important breakthroughs are achieved. CPB weaponry is a much more difficult issue to assess. Basic problems in physics and engineering remain to be solved, and it is unlikely that any mere evolutionary development of existing technology will be sufficient to make CPB technology available for weapon purposes, particularly the ABM role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Background Paper describes and assesses current concepts for directed-energy ballistic missile defense in space. Its purpose is to provide Members of Congress, their staffs, and the public with a readable introduction to the so-called 'Star Wars'technologies that some suggest might form the basis of a future nationwide defense against Soviet nuclear ballistic missiles. Since these technologies are a relatively new focus for U.S. missile defense efforts, little information about them has been readily available outside the expert community. Directed-energy or 'beam' weapons comprise chemical lasers, excimer and free electron lasers, nuclear bomb-powered x-ray lasers, neutral and charged particle beams, kinetic energy weapons, and microwave weapons. In addition to describing these devices, this Background Paper assesses he prospects for fashioning from such weapons robust and reliable wartime defense system resistant to Soviet countermeasures. The assessment distinguishes the prospects for perfect or ear-perfect protection of U.S. cities and population from the prospects that technology will achieve a modest, less-than-perfect level of performance that will nonetheless be seen by some experts as having strategic value. Though the focus is technical, the Paper also discusses, but oes not assess in detail, the strategic and arms control implications of a major U.S. move to develop and deploy ballistic missile defense (BMD).

Book excerpt: This book delves deeply into the real-world technologies behind the ‘directed energy weapons’ that many believe exist only within the confines of science fiction. On the contrary, directed energy weapons such as high energy lasers are very real, and this book provides a crash course in all the physical and mathematical concepts that make these weapons a reality. Written to serve both scientists researching the physical phenomena of laser effects, as well as engineers focusing on practical applications, the author provides worked examples demonstrating issues such as how to solve for heat diffusion equation for different boundary and initial conditions. Several sections are devoted to reviewing and dealing with solutions of diffusion equations utilizing the aid of the integral transform techniques. Ultimately this book examines the state-of-the-art in currently available high energy laser technologies, and suggests future directions for accelerating practical applications in the field.“br>/div

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beam Weapons describes the roots of Ronald Reagan's 'Star Wars' quest for a strategic defense system to intercept and destroy nuclear ballistic missiles before they could reach their targets. The goal was to develop radically new beam weapons that destroyed nuclear missiles with directed energy - laser beams or charged particles. The daring program was born at a time of intense technological optimism, when NASA talked of weekly space shuttle flights. Pentagon planners envisioned a fleet of orbiting laser battle stations that could blast thousands of nuclear missiles out of the sky. Critics dubbed the plan an impossible 'Star Wars' fantasy. The controversy quickly grew heated. In Beam Weapons, Jeff Hecht focuses on the core technical issues. He tells how lasers and particle beams work, explains what is needed for effective missile defense, and carefully analyzes the feasibility of proposed systems. More than 30 years later, the Cold War is history, but the technology Reagan sought remains beyond the state of the art. Originally published as Beam Weapons: The Next Arms Race in 1984, the book has a new subtitle to reflect its historical import. A new epilogue recalls key events of the intervening decades, and describes the Pentagon's new generation of more modest laser weapons.

Book excerpt: What Is Directed Energy Weapon A directed-energy weapon, often known as a DEW, is a ranged weapon that inflicts harm on its target by directing a highly concentrated kind of energy towards it. This type of energy may take the form of lasers, microwaves, particle beams, or sound beams. This technology may have a variety of uses, some of which include weapons that target individuals, missiles, vehicles, and optical equipment. Research on directed-energy weapons to counter ballistic missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles, and hypersonic glide vehicles is being conducted in the United States by the Department of Defense, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Air Force Research Laboratory, the United States Army Armament Research Development and Engineering Center, and the Naval Research Laboratory. It is not anticipated that these missile defense systems would become operational any earlier than the middle to late 2020s. Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive examination of the issues surrounding the potential development by the United States of a space-based laser weapons program. The authors assess the implications of arms control agreements for a satellite-based laser program, including discussions of recent Soviet space-related arms control initiatives and the forthcoming ABM treaty review. They outline likely Soviet responses to a U.S. space-based laser system, address criticisms of the proposed program, and consider its future in light of developments in U.S. defense strategy and doctrine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is Laser Weapon A directed-energy weapon that makes use of lasers is referred to as a laser weapon. After many decades of research and development, directed-energy weapons such as lasers are still in the experimental stage as of January 2020. It is unknown whether or not these weapons will ever be deployed as operational, high-performance military weapons, and if so, when this will occur. If there is fog, smoke, dust, precipitation, snow, smog, foam, or purposefully scattered obscurant compounds in the atmosphere, atmospheric thermal blooming will be much more severe than it already is. This issue is still mostly unresolved. A laser, at its core, is a light-emitting diode that, in order to function properly and avoid producing unwanted thermal blooming, must emit a beam of light into the atmosphere or into a vacuum. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directed Energy Weapons is nothing new to mankind, historically the origination of such weapons falls in centuries ago when first time the famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse used different mirrors to collect sunbeams and focusing them on Romans fleet in order to destroy enemy ships with fire. This is known as the Archimedes Heat Ray. Archimedes may have used mirrors acting collectively as a parabolic reflector to burn ships attacking Syracuse. The device was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire. Of course the myth or reality of Archimedes Heat Ray still is a questionable story, but certain experiments with the help of a group of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology was carried out with 127 one-foot (30 cm) square mirror tiles in October of 2005 that was focused on a mock-up wooden ship at a range of around 100 feet (30 m). The flames broke out on a patch of the ship, but only after the sky had been cloudless and the ship had remained stationary for around ten minutes. It was concluded the device was a feasible weapon under these conditions.
