La esclavocracia reaccionaba ante las oleadas de protesta, en sus formas individuales o colectivas, con la más despiadada represión, justificada por enunciados antropológicos, teológicos, históricos y sociológicos: pusieron en marcha un complejo mecanismo de degradación psicológica, moral y física de todo un pueblo; alzaron un rígido código en defensa de sus intereses. Desenterrar la historia de las rebeliones -tarea ardua debido a las exageraciones, tergiversaciones y censuras a que ha estado sometido el tema- ha sido el móvil de Herbert Aptheker en su prolija labor en los archivos. El fruto es este libro, capital para conocer las diversas secuencias de la esclavitud de los negros norteamericanos. En los siete primeros capítulos, el autor analiza el miedo de los amos a la rebelión, los aparatos de control que crearon, los precipitantes de la rebelión, los actos individuales de resistencia. Los capítulos sucesivos pormenorizan los primeros levantamientos y cada una de las oleadas que se sucedieron entre 1791 y 1860. Cierra el libro un capítulo dedicado a la repercusión de la guerra civil norteamericana en el movimiento de liberación de los esclavos.

Well before the events that would lead inexorably toward 1898, Gald�s's texts question the nature of Spanish imperialism and the effect of colonial history on the lives of metropolitan citizens. Methodologically framed by trauma studies, affect studies and the concept of the imperial turn, a close reading of the texts reveals Gald�s's preoccupation with explaining not only how Spain lost its vast territories in the Americas in the early part of the century but also how Spanish citizens could manage the trauma of that loss through a reconfiguration of national identity. His novels reveal the deeply entwined nature of colonial relations and how Spain attempted to process the trauma of imperial loss. Moreover, by recognizing that this process extended across the nineteenth century, it becomes clear that Spain's engagement with European cultural and literary movements was, contrary to the assumptions of European imperialism, neither slow nor imitative but rather illustrative of the nation's unique position on the cusp of the historical shift to the postcolonial present.
