Durante la vigencia de la relación de pareja, por lo general no existirán discrepancias de carácter económico entre sus miembros, si bien en el momento de la ruptura serán, por el contrario, muy frecuentes. En este sentido, una de las cuestiones que más interés suscita entre los que fueron integrantes de la misma son las posibles pensiones y/o compensaciones que se tendrán que abonar por parte de uno de los convivientes al otro. Lo habitual entre los compañeros es la ausencia de pactos que disciplinen, entre otras materias, las consecuencias económicas derivadas de la ruptura. Sin embargo, es la solución idónea, por sus inestimables ventajas, para regular las eventuales pensiones y/o compensaciones; no obstante, tales acuerdos deberán cumplir ciertos presupuestos, a los que hacemos alusión en la presente obra. La problemática de las prestaciones económicas consecuencia de la ruptura de las parejas no casadas se encuentra caracterizada, entre otras, por dos grandes particularidades. Por un lado, una notable diversidad de criterios de resolución establecidos tanto a nivel estatal -por vía jurisprudencial- como autonómico -por las diferentes Leyes de pareja-. Criterios que, en todo caso, en el presente estudio se examinan en su totalidad y de manera exhaustiva. Por otro, la importante inseguridad jurídica y confusión, si bien el autor acomete la encomiable tarea de clarificación conceptual y jurídica en un ámbito tan necesitado de las mismas. En definitiva, la monografía que el lector tiene ante sí constituye una obra de ineludible referencia pues resulta un extraordinario y riguroso examen, completo e independiente, de todos los instrumentos jurídicos que, tanto a nivel estatal como autonómico, existen para poder fundamentar la reclamación de pensiones y compensaciones consecuencia de la ruptura de la pareja no casada, analizando, para ello, toda la legislación -estatal y autonómica-, jurisprudencia y doctrina existentes al respecto.

The Politics of Sexuality in Latin America presents the first English-language reader on LGBT politics in Latin America. Representing a range of contemporary works by scholars, activists, analysts, and politicians, the chapters address LGBT issues in nations from Cuba to Argentina. In their many findings, two main themes emerge: the struggle for LGBT rights has made significant inroads in the first decade of the twenty-first century (though not in every domain or every region); and the advances made were slow in coming compared to other social movements. The articles uncover the many obstacles that LGBT activists face in establishing new laws and breaking down societal barriers. They identify perhaps the greatest roadblock in Latin American culture as an omnipresent system of "heteronormativity," wherein heterosexuality, patriarchalism, gender hierarchies, and economic structures are deeply rooted in nearly every level of society. They do not dispute that dependence on oil can generate political and economic distortions—the "resource curse" or "paradox of plenty" arguments—but they counter that oil alone fails to explain Chávez's rise. Instead they single out a weak framework of checks and balances that allowed the executive branch to extract oil rents and distribute them to the populace. The real culprit behind Chávez's success, they write, was the asymmetry of political power.
