Book Synopsis Children of Austerity by : Bea Cantillon
Download or read book Children of Austerity written by Bea Cantillon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2008 financial crisis triggered the worst global recession since the Great Depression. Many OECD countries responded to the crisis by reducing social spending. Through 11 diverse country case studies (Belgium, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States), this volume describes the evolution of child poverty and material well-being during the crisis, and links these outcomes with the responses by governments. The analysis underlines that countries with fragmented social protection systems were less able to protect the incomes of households with children at the time when unemployment soared. In contrast, countries with more comprehensive social protection cushioned the impact of the crisis on households with children, especially if they had implemented fiscal stimulus packages at the onset of the crisis. Although the macroeconomic 'shock' itself and the starting positions differed greatly across countries, while the responses by governments covered a very wide range of policy levers and varied with their circumstances, cuts in social spending and tax increases often played a major role in the impact that the crisis had on the living standards of families and children.
Book Synopsis Building Primary Care in a Changing Europe by : Dionne S. Kringos
Download or read book Building Primary Care in a Changing Europe written by Dionne S. Kringos and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many citizens primary health care is the first point of contact with their health care system, where most of their health needs are satisfied but also acting as the gate to the rest of the system. In that respect primary care plays a crucial role in how patients value health systems as responsive to their needs and expectations. This volume analyses the way how primary are is organized and delivered across European countries, looking at governance, financing and workforce aspects and the breadth of the service profiles. It describes wide national variations in terms of accessibility, continuity and coordination. Relating these differences to health system outcomes the authors suggest some priority areas for reducing the gap between the ideal and current realities.
Book Synopsis Memory and Cultural History of the Spanish Civil War by :
Download or read book Memory and Cultural History of the Spanish Civil War written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors in this anthology explore how we are to rethink political and social narratives of the Spanish Civil War at the turn of the twenty-first century. The questions addressed here are based on a solid intellectual conviction of all the contributors to resist facile arguments both on the Right and the Left, concerning the historical and collective memory of the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship in the milieu of post-transition to democracy. Central to a true democratic historical narrative is the commitment to listening to the other experiences and the willingness to rethink our present(s) in light of our past(s). The volume is divided in six parts: I. Institutional Realms of Memory; II. Past Imperfect: Gender Archetypes in Retrospect; III. The Many Languages of Domesticity; IV. Realms of Oblivion: Hunger, Repression, and Violence; V. Strangers to Ourselves: Autobiographical Testimonies; and VI. The Orient Within: Myths of Hispano-Arabic Identity. Download or read book Sepsis written by Nancy Khardori and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses multiple aspects of sepsis syndrome seen in all age groups of patients and by all specialties in medicine. The syndrome is the aftermath of the dissemination of an infectious process into and through the blood stream. This allows the bacteria, bacterial products and cytokines to reach multiple organs, resulting in their dysfunction. In spite of the advances in supportive care and antibiotic therapy, the outcome of sepsis has not changed significantly. The inadequacies in the current diagnostic modalities and conflicting inconclusive results of investigations on novel treatments have contributed significantly to the lack of progress in the management of sepsis. Antibiotic overuse in and outside the intensive care unit driven by the lack of microbiological data and definitive diagnosis lends to the creation and transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria, which has added to the challenges and poor outcomes of sepsis syndrome. The nine chapters in this book are authored by experts in various aspects of sepsis from North America, South America, Europe and Asia. State of the art information is provided in the areas of pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis and management of sepsis. Each chapter has a contribution on the role of various evidence-based preventive strategies to reduce the incidence and subsequent poor outcomes of sepsis syndrome.
