Book Synopsis Theo Van Doesburg by : Paul Dujardin

Book excerpt: Résumé en 4ème de couverture: "After the First World War, the European avant-gardes longed for change and hoped for a better future. More than any other artist, Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) took part in this reconstruction effort by broadening Piet Mondian's Neoplastic aesthetic to all disciplines: painting, sculpture, architecture and the applied arts. Theo van Doesburg proposed a genuine revolution that sought to transform the world in every way, to create a new kind of artistic expression, wich would interact not only with life in all its complexity but also with scientific and technological developments. His constantly changing approach brought together apparently incompatible innovation, as demonstrated by this move toward Elementarism and then to Art Concret. To champion his project on the international stage, Van Doesburg, who was also the founder of th De Stijl movement and its magazine, succeeded in bringing together all the leading artists. He is recognized as much for his visual achievements as for his means of accomplishing a philosophical, artistic an collective ideal. Many artists, including Mondrian, would largely owe their internation renown to Theo van Doesburg."

A very sneaky Fox and a very sleepy Bear set off to explore other places for Bear to call home. The train tunnel is too loud, even if the double doors are nice. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the twenty-first century, villages in the Fang region of northern Gabon must grapple with the clash of tradition and the evolution of customs throughout modern Africa. With this tension in the background, the passionate, deft, and creative seamstress Awu marries Obame, after he and his beloved wife, Bella, have been unable to conceive. Because all three are reluctant participants in this arrangement, theirs is an emotionally fraught existence. Through heartbreaking and disastrous events, Awu grapples with long-standing Fang customs that counter her desire to take full control of her life and home. Supplemented with a foreword and critical introduction highlighting Justine Mintsa’s importance in African literature, Awu’s Story is an essential work of African women’s writing and the only published work to meditate this deeply on some of the Fang’s most cherished legends and oral history.

Book Synopsis Manual of Romance Word Classes by : Anna-Maria De Cesare
Download or read book Manual of Romance Word Classes written by Anna-Maria De Cesare and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word classes are linguistic categories serving as basis in the description of the vocabulary and grammar of natural languages. While important publications are regularly devoted to their definition, identification, and classification, in the field of Romance linguistics we lack a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the current research. This Manual offers an updated and detailed discussion of all relevant aspects related to word classes in the Romance languages. In the first part, word classes are discussed from both a theoretical and historical point of view. The second part of the volume takes as its point of departure single word classes, described transversally in all the main Romance languages, while the third observes the relevant word classes from the point of view of specific Romance(-based) varieties. The fourth part explores Romance word classes at the interface of grammar and other fields of research. The Manual is intended as a reference work for all scholars and students interested in the description of both the standard, major Romance languages and the smaller, lesser described Romance(-based) varieties.
Book Synopsis The Odyssey of an Apple Thief by : Moishe Rozenbaumas
Download or read book The Odyssey of an Apple Thief written by Moishe Rozenbaumas and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Odyssey of an Apple Thief, Moishe Rozenbaumas (1922–2016) recounts his fascinating life, from his Lithuanian boyhood, to the fraught experiences that take him across Europe and Central Asia and back again, to his daring escape from Soviet Russia to build a new life in Paris. Along the way, we get a rarely seen portrait of the lives of working-class Jewish youth in Telz/Telsiai, a religious town renowned for its yeshiva. We hear of the games children played, the theft of apples from a Catholic orchard, and Rozenbaumas’s early apprenticeship as a tailor once his father leaves the country. The war breaks out and the teenaged Rozenbaumas flees Lithuania alone, unable to convince his mother and sibling to go with him. We learn of his life as a starved refugee in an Uzbek kolkhoz, his escape into the Red Army, and his unlikely work in the reconnaissance unit of the Soviet Army. After the war, Rozenbaumas is drafted into the Marxist-Leninist university and as a cadre of the Communist Party, ultimately escaping in 1956 with his family to Paris, where he and his wife give an openly Jewish education to their children. In the vast literature of memory written by Jewish witnesses before, during, and after WWII, Rozenbaumas’s account stands out for the singularity of his experience and for his deft narration of events of mythological dimension from a personal perspective. The Odyssey of an Apple Thief offers not only invaluable testimony of this historical moment but also an illuminating and original portrait of Lithuanian Jews in the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Abridged Handbook of Grenadian Creole English and French Names by : Thomas R. Chase
Download or read book Abridged Handbook of Grenadian Creole English and French Names written by Thomas R. Chase and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook includes elements of Grenadian folklore, proverbs, and sayings. Much more work needs to be done in those areas. In fact, the proverbs and sayings are already the object of a separate publication that is well underway. A special section on French names and their meanings has also been included for primary school pupils and teachers, as well as foreigners to our shores. It deals with the names of places, people, patois nicknames, and French-sounding names. Keywords, key expressions, or entries in the lexeme section and in other sections of the book are in bold type. Some of these terms may also be noted by an asterisk. The part of speech of the terms is noted, their pronunciation where deemed necessary for this particular publication, the origin of the term, and their meaning in SE/GCE. As a general rule, the most popular meanings of terms are in descending order of importance. The cultural and folkloric values of certain entries are noted in an effort to document such information and/or beliefs. Synonyms, antonyms, and cross references are given due prominence to show the richness of the language. Omitted from this work are terms considered to be too vulgar in nature, particularly the wealth of those referring to human sexual organs and expletives. A comparative grammar section juxtaposes grammatical similarities and differences between SE and GCE. It is a scratching of the surface and is intended to show, first of all, that GCE has a grammar of its own, where traditionally certain linguistic performances were and may still be seen or written off as errors. In fact, they may be standard grammatical features of GCE and Creole English. This section explores as well the nature and origin of some of the syntactic structures used by Grenadians with a view to facilitate the transition from SE to GCE, or vice versa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 7th International Conference on Implementation and Application of Au- mata (CIAA 2002) was held at the Universit ́ e Fran ̧ cois Rabelais of Tours, in Tours, France, on July 3–5, 2002. This volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science contains all the papers that were presented at CIAA 2002, as well as the abstracts of the poster papers that were displayed during the conference. The conference addressed issues in automata application and implemen- tion. Thetopicsofthepaperspresentedinthisconferencerangedfromautomata applications in software engineering, natural language and speech recognition, and image processing, to new representations and algorithms for e?cient imp- mentation of automata and related structures. Automata theory is one of the oldest areas in computer science. Research in automata theory has always been motivated by its applications since its early stage of development. In the 1960s and 1970s, automata research was motivated heavily by problems arising from compiler construction, circuit design, string matching, etc. In recent years, many new applications of automata have been found in various areas of computer science as well as in other disciplines. - amples of the new applications include statecharts in object-oriented modeling, ?nite transducers in natural language processing, and nondeterministic ?ni- state models in communication protocols. Many of the new applications cannot simply utilize the existing models and algorithms in automata theory in the - lution to their problems. New models, or modi?cations of the existing models, are needed to satisfy their requirements.
