Book excerpt: The largest and most extensive retrospective of Lars Tunbjörk's work ever published. Lars Tunbjörk was inspired by the Swedish masters such as Christer Stromholm, but soon discovered his own style by taking a cue from the American photographers of the 1970s like Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. Tunbjork's images amplified the most mundane and absurd aspects of modern life in a surreal way, using the hard light of flash photography, which became his signature style and influenced a generation of photographers after him. Whatever subject he was documenting, suburbia or offices spaces, he did it in such a revealing way with a stark, clear-eyed honesty layered with a sense of humour. Tunbjörk's work is best experienced in the photo book format. He used the medium to build loose narratives and to showcase his extraordinary projects. He released more than 10 photobooks, which include Home and Vinter. He came to pre-eminence with the now rare book Office, with Martin Parr and Gerry Badger describing him as 'an acute observer of modern life.

Book excerpt: In I Love Bor¬s, photographer Lars Tunbjörk documents his aimless journey around Sweden between 1988 and 1995. His images of ordinary Swedish life take readers to supermarkets, parties, small-town streets, amusement parks, gas stations, TV shows, landscapes and dining tables. Together these photographs reveal a dark and frenzied view of Sweden during the economic recession of the early 90s, and an equally dark take on modern Western society as a whole.

Book excerpt: Australian photographer Matthew Sleeth is a consummate observer, exploring the world around him with an acute and often humorous eye. His latest project, "Ten Series/106 Photographs," emphasizes how the sequencing of images is an essential part of creating photographic meaning, a conceit with precedents in the work of Ed Ruscha, among others. Sleeth's playfulness, wry sensibility and unorthodox visual style, however, also recall practicing photographers like Lars Tunbjork and Lee Friedlander. With its range of typologies, "Ten Series/106 Photographs" is varied and eclectic. Topics include Japanese women in uniform, tagged trees and plants in an arboretum, "Red" China and Mount Fuji (inspired by old Japanese prints, but with each image taken from a modern vantage point). Through its casual exploration of these disparate themes, this volume offers a view of a contemporary world that is structured on somewhat arbitrary types, categories and systems of classification--all the while making allusions to the role that photography has played in this process.

Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet de JRP/Ringier: "Since the mid-1990s, Henrik Olesen (*1967 Denmark, lives and works in Berlin) has used media such as collage, sculpture, and minimalistic spatial intervention to investigate the social construction of identity and its historiography. Through the appropriation of source images and contextual shifts not dissimilar to the method invented by Aby Warburg for his "Mnemosyne Atlas," Olesen probes the associations between homosexuality and its criminalization in the past, as well as in the present. His archival work sheds light on the enduring existence of spaces for Others, and inscribes homosexual subculture once more into the history of art and culture. Published with the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich."

Book excerpt: A cultural history of the sublime first image of a black hole, in photographs and documents "Peering into Light's Graveyard: The First Image of the Black Hole," read the New York Times' April 11 cover story. The headline, like many others that day, was accompanied by an image of a glowing celestial ring framed by infinite blackness: the first image of a black hole. In his first book, New York photographer Matthew Beck (born 1986) focuses on the unveiling of this previously unseeable image by following it into the depths of the New York City subway. The book suggests the notion that the cosmos is not something to simply be observed from our vantage point as humans, but more a system that we are intrinsically a part of; and the true nature of the black hole seems to be as elusive as the answer to humanity's most pressing question of "why."

Book excerpt: The Ruppert Mundys, once the greatest baseball team in America, are now in a terminal decline, their line-up filled with a disreputable assortment of old men, drunks and even amputees. Around them baseball itself seems to be collapsing, brought down by a bizarre mixture of criminality, stupidity, and The Great Communist Conspiracy, aimed at the very heart of the American way of life. In this hilarious and wonderfully eccentric novel Philip Roth turns his attention to one of the most beloved of all American rituals: baseball. Players, tycoons and the paying public are all targets as Roth satirises the dense tapestry of myths and legends that have grown up around The Great American Pastime.

Book excerpt: First published in the United States in 1967 and in Britain in 1968, House of Bondage presented images from South Africa that shocked the world. The young African photographer had left his country at 26 to find an audience for his stunning exposure of the system of racial dominance known as apartheid. In 185 photographs, Cole's book showed from the vantage point of the oppressed how the system closely regulated and controlled the lives of the black majority. He saw every aspect of this oppression with a searching eye and a passionate heart. House of Bondage is a milestone in the history of documentary photography, even though it was immediately banned in South Africa. In a Chicago Tribune review of 1967 Robert Cromie described it as "one of the frankest books ever done on South Africa--with photographs by a native of that country who would be most unwise to attempt to return for some years." Cole died in exile in 1990 as the regime was collapsing, never knowing when his portrait of his homeland would finally find its way home. Not until the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg mounted enlarged pages of the book on its walls in 2001 were his people able to view these pictures, which are as powerful and provocative today as they were 50 years ago.

Book excerpt: "Originally published in 1982, Stephen Shore's legendary Uncommon Places has influenced more than a generation of photographers. Shore was among the first artists to take color beyond the domain of advertising and fashion photography, and his large-format color work on the American vernacular landscape stands at the root of what has become a vital photographic tradition over the past forty years. Uncommon Places: The Complete Works, published by Aperture in 2004, presents a definitive collection of the landmark series, and in the span of a decade, has become a contemporary classic. Now, for this lushly produced reissue, the artist has added twenty rediscovered images and a statement explaining what it means to expand a series now many decades old. Like Robert Frank and Walker Evans before him, Shore discovered a hitherto unarticulated vision of America via highway and camera. Approaching his subjects with cool objectivity, Shore in these images retains precise internal systems of gestures in composition and light, through which a parking lot emptied of people, a hotel bedroom, or a building on a side street assumes both an archetypal aura and an ambiguously personal importance. In contrast to his signature landscapes with which Uncommon Places is often associated, this expanded survey reveals equally remarkable collections of interiors and portraits." -- Publisher's description.
