Also, the broad linguistic constraints in the first pass generalize better to unseen data compared to finer, context-dependent acoustic phonetic models. This thesis also studies a data-driven analysis of acoustic similarities among open vocabulary items. The results are used for recovering possible errors in the first pass. This approach demonstrates an advantage over a two-pass approach based on specific semantic constraints. In summary, this thesis implements the original Huttenlocher-Zue two-pass lexical access model in a modern probabilistic speech recognition framework. This thesis also extends the original model to recognize continuous speech from an open vocabulary, with our two-stage model achieving a better performance than the baseline system. In the future, sub-lexical linguistic hierarchy constraints, such as syllables, can be introduced into this two-pass model to further improve the lexical access performance.

Book excerpt: Corpus-based methods will be found at the heart of many language and speech processing systems. This book provides an in-depth introduction to these technologies through chapters describing basic statistical modeling techniques for language and speech, the use of Hidden Markov Models in continuous speech recognition, the development of dialogue systems, part-of-speech tagging and partial parsing, data-oriented parsing and n-gram language modeling. The book attempts to give both a clear overview of the main technologies used in language and speech processing, along with sufficient mathematics to understand the underlying principles. There is also an extensive bibliography to enable topics of interest to be pursued further. Overall, we believe that the book will give newcomers a solid introduction to the field and it will give existing practitioners a concise review of the principal technologies used in state-of-the-art language and speech processing systems. Corpus-Based Methods in Language and Speech Processing is an initiative of ELSNET, the European Network in Language and Speech. In its activities, ELSNET attaches great importance to the integration of language and speech, both in research and in education. The need for and the potential of this integration are well demonstrated by this publication.

Book excerpt: The book collects the contributions to the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Speech Recognition and Understanding: Recent Advances, Trends and Applications", held in Cetraro, Italy, during the first two weeks of July 1990. This Institute focused on three topics that are considered of particular interest and rich of i'p.novation by researchers in the fields of speech recognition and understanding: Advances in Hidden Markov modeling, connectionist approaches to speech and language modeling, and linguistic processing including language and dialogue modeling. The purpose of any ASI is that of encouraging scientific communications between researchers of NATO countries through advanced tutorials and presentations: excellent tutorials were offered by invited speakers that present in this book 15 papers which sum marize or detail the topics covered in their lectures. The lectures were complemented by discussions, panel sections and by the presentation of related works carried on by some of the attending researchers: these presentations have been collected in 42 short contributions to the Proceedings. This volume, that the reader can find useful for an overview, although incomplete, of the state of the art in speech understanding, is divided into 6 Parts.

Three indispensable and correlated performance measurements -- accuracy, speed, and memory cost, are carefully considered in the system design. A novel algorithm, Order-Preserving Language Model Context Pre-computing (OPCP) is proposed for fast Language Model (LM) lookup, resulting in significant improvement in both overall decoding time and memory space without any decrease of recognition accuracy. The time and memory savings in LM lookup by using OPCP became more pronounced with the increase of LM size. By using the OPCP method and other optimizations, our one-pass LVCSR decoding engine, named TigerEngine, reached real-time speed in both tasks of Wall Street Journal 20K and Switchboard 33K, on the platform of a Dell workstation with one 3.2 GHz Xeon CPU. TigerEngine is to be used in automatic captioning for Telehealth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speech Recognition has a long history of being one of the difficult problems in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. As one goes from problem solving tasks such as puzzles and chess to perceptual tasks such as speech and vision, the problem characteristics change dramatically: knowledge poor to knowledge rich; low data rates to high data rates; slow response time (minutes to hours) to instantaneous response time. These characteristics taken together increase the computational complexity of the problem by several orders of magnitude. Further, speech provides a challenging task domain which embodies many of the requirements of intelligent behavior: operate in real time; exploit vast amounts of knowledge, tolerate errorful, unexpected unknown input; use symbols and abstractions; communicate in natural language and learn from the environment. Voice input to computers offers a number of advantages. It provides a natural, fast, hands free, eyes free, location free input medium. However, there are many as yet unsolved problems that prevent routine use of speech as an input device by non-experts. These include cost, real time response, speaker independence, robustness to variations such as noise, microphone, speech rate and loudness, and the ability to handle non-grammatical speech. Satisfactory solutions to each of these problems can be expected within the next decade. Recognition of unrestricted spontaneous continuous speech appears unsolvable at present. However, by the addition of simple constraints, such as clarification dialog to resolve ambiguity, we believe it will be possible to develop systems capable of accepting very large vocabulary continuous speechdictation.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Generally speaking, the speaker-dependence of a speech recognition system comes from speaker-dependent speech feature. The variation of vocal tract length and/or shape is one of the major source [sic] of inter-speaker variations. In this paper, we address several methods of vocal tract length normalization (VTLN) for large vocabulary continuous speech recognition: (1) explore the bilinear warping VTLN in frequency domain; (2) propose a speaker-specific Bark/Mel scale VTLN in Bark/Mel domain; (3) investigate adaptation of the normalization factor. Our experimental results show that the speaker-specific Bark/Mel scale VTLN is better than the piecewise/bilinear warping VTLN in frequency domain. It can reduce up to 12% word error rate for our Spanish and English spontaneous speech scheduling task database. For adaptation of the normalization factor, our experimental results show that promising result [sic] can be obtained by using not more than three utterances from a new speaker to estimate his/her normalization factor, and the unsupervised adaptation mode works as well as the supervised one. Therefore, the computational complexity of VTLN can be avoided by learning the normalization factor from very few utterances of a new speaker."
