Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to identify known relationships between commercial vehicle safety and crash causation factors and to prepare a synthesis of safety implications of oversize/overweight (OS/OW) commercial vehicles. This information can be used to support commercial vehicle enforcement and permitting practices and justify expenditures and investments on size and weight enforcement to enhance safety. In producing this report, insight was gained into the impacts of truck size and weight (TSW) regulations through three case studies. The state of practice in estimating large truck crash rates is complicated because of the many configurations and the wide range of possible weights for any particular configuration. This report highlights four primary findings regarding the contributions of OS/OW to commercial vehicle crashes found by its researchers.

Large trucks include vehicles commonly referred to as commercial motor vehicles, semi-tractor trailers, 18-wheelers, or semis as well as single-unit trucks larger than 10,000 lbs gross vehicle weight. The document includes the significance of large truck safety issues, the overrepresentation of large trucks in work zone crashes, ways to design practices to better accommodate large trucks, and ways to help truck driver better negotiate work zones.".--National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse website.

This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a request by Frank S. Wolf and Jo Ann Davis of the U.S. House of Representatives, Governor Mark Warner formed a Special Task Force on Truck Safety in the fall of 2002. The objective of the task force was to examine ways to reduce the number of crashes involving large trucks on Virginia's roads. One of the goals of this task force was to identify engineering and technology measures that have the potential to improve large truck safety. The task force charged the Virginia Transportation Research Council with identifying engineering and technology measures that offer the potential to improve large truck safety. A literature review of these areas was conducted, and a survey of personnel in the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) was also carried out (1) to determine what measures have been implemented in Virginia, and (2) to solicit ideas for additional improvements. Traffic control improvements, geometric design changes, and intelligent transportation systems that improve truck safety are summarized in this report, and survey respondents. Recommendations for potential initiatives in engineering, enforcement, and education are also presented. The research showed that VDOT has already taken many actions to improve large truck safety issues and that further action could be taken in several areas: 1. VDOT's Mobility Management Division (MMD) should consider encouraging the use of dynamic truck speed advisory systems on freeway ramps where there are large numbers of rollover crashes. 2. VDOT's Location & Design Division should examine whether current design standards are adequate for the current truck fleet. 3. The MMD should consider developing guidelines for providing advance warning of the start of the red phase at intersections with limited sight distance. 4. The MMD should reexamine whether the truck lane restrictions are producing safety improvements. In addition to these measures, VDOT should continue to pursue the initiatives that are already underway, for example, the rumble strip program and measures to improve traveler information.

Book excerpt: TRB's Commercial Truck and Bus Safety Synthesis Program (CTBSSP) Synthesis 4: Individual Differences and the "High-Risk" Commercial Driver explores individual differences among commercial drivers, particularly as these differences relate to the "high-risk" commercial driver. The synthesis identifies factors relating to commercial vehicle crash risk and assesses ways that the high-risk driver can be targeted by various safety programs and practices, at both fleet- and industry-wide levels.

Book excerpt: The use of large trucks has steadily increased since the passage of the Surface Transportation Assistance Act to the point where they now account for over 50% of vehicle traffic on some highways in Virginia. Projections now forecast that large-truck travel will grow at twice the rate of personal vehicle travel in the near future. Although several studies have been conducted to determine the effects of large trucks on safety on multilane primary and interstate highway systems, the effects on two-lane secondary roads have been largely ignored. This study identified the causal factors and predominant types of large-truck crashes on two-lane secondary roads in Virginia and compared the large-truck crash rates for two-lane secondary roads and two-lane primary roads. The study also identified advanced technologies associated with intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that can be used to minimize the causal factors of large-truck crashes on these roads. The results showed that large-truck crash rates are significantly higher on two-lane secondary roads than on two-lane primary roads, with the predominant types of crashes being angle, rear end, sideswipe same direction, and sideswipe opposite direction. The study identified several ITS technologies that can be used to mitigate the predominant causal factors and recommends a pilot study to test the effectiveness of one such system.
