Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the third annual poststocking period covering the 12-month period from September 1979-August 1980. The data collected during this period are compiled herein in a format similar to that used for the baseline report and the two previous poststocking reports. The compiled poststocking data are compared to the baseline conditions to determine if any significant changes have occurred as a result of the introduction of the white amur into Lake Conway. Subsequent to the introduction of the white amur, both total filterable and total unfilterable phosphorus underwent significant downward trends that presently appear to be becoming stable. Conversely, the gradual upward trend of chlorophyll-a continued during this period. Sediment quality data showed several changes from the baseline period. The mean total phosphorus concentration decreased 56 percent as compared to the baseline period. Conversely, mean copper and lead concentrations increased above baseline values. (Author).

Book Synopsis Lake and Reservoir Restoration by : G. Dennis Cooke
Download or read book Lake and Reservoir Restoration written by G. Dennis Cooke and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake and Reservoir Restoration deals with the eutrophication process and the methods to protect, restore, and manage lakes and reservoirs. The most common in-lake techniques or procedures, plus nutrient diversion, are reviewed with regard to their scientific basis, methods of application, known effectiveness, feasibility, drawbacks, and costs. Areas for further research and development are also highlighted. This book is comprised of 16 chapters organized into four sections. After an introduction to the theory of the problem and the restoration technique, the discussion turns to the various restoration methods such as those used for physical and chemical control of nutrients. Diversion and advanced waste treatment, hypolimnetic withdrawal, and dilution and flushing are considered along with phosphorus precipitation and inactivation, sediment oxidation, sediment removal, and hypolimnetic aeration. Case studies and success stories are presented and the costs and potential negative impacts of the methods are examined. The following chapters focus on methods to control plant biomass, including artificial circulation, water-level drawdown, harvesting, biological control, and surface and sediment covers. A chapter on liming acidified lakes concludes this text. This monograph will be useful to professional limnologists and engineers, on-site lake or reservoir managers, and those who are interested in learning about the problems and management of lakes and reservoirs.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the initial poststocking period covering a 12-month period from September 1977-August 1978. The data collected during this period were compiled in a format similar to that used for the baseline report. The compiled poststocking data were compared to the baseline conditions to determine if any substantial changes had occurred. The baseline report concentrated on certain water quality factors for future data comparisons. These included concentration variability due to sampling depth, water quality variability between the five lake pools, phyto-plankton and nutrient relationships, and seasonal variations in water quality. Each of these factors is reviewed in this report, and changes which have occurred compared to the baseline period are documented. Concerning variations with changing sampling depths, three parameters were found to have greater than a 5 percent variation in mean value at different depths. These parameters include organic nitrogen, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and volatile suspended solids. The baseline report established a trend of increasing water quality proceeding from Lake Gatlin to the South pool of Lake Conway. During the poststocking period this trend changed somewhat in that the pools associated with Lake Conway exhibited similar water quality conditions compared to each other. However, Lake Gatlin continued to have the poorest water quality.

Book excerpt: An integrated nutrient budget for Lake Conway, Florida, was developed that integrated physical, chemical, and biological relationships. A hydrologic budget was constructed from measurements of stormwater runoff, subsurface seepage flows, and existing precipitation and evaporation data. It was determined that major sources of external nitrogen and phosphorus loadings were from atmospheric loadings, urban runoff, and subsurface seepage. Based upon a simulation model of the phosphorus dynamics of Lake Conway, it was concluded that sedimentation of phosphorus was occurring at higher than predicted rates, nutrient release by submerged macrophytes was salient to phosphorus dynamics, and release of phosphorus by sediments was not a significant internal source of this nutrient. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation of a model summarizing relationships between major biotic and abiotic components in Lake Conway, Florida, indicated that the establishment of significant growths of submersed plants had enabled nutrients in sediments, previously removed from the mainstream of nutrient cycling, to be reintroduced into the water column where stimulation of phytoplankton production can occur. Internal recycling of phosphorus by submersed plants was estimated to represent nearly half of the annual phosphorus input to the lake. Apparently, nutrient loading from outside sources has declined over the last few years, and the simulation showed slowly declining submersed plant biomass and productivity after six years as nutrients were washed out. Phytoplankton biomass and productivity also began to decline after six years.
