Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “utterly fascinating” untold story of Soviet Russia’s global military mapping program—featuring many of the surprising maps that resulted (Marina Lewycka, author of A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian). From 1950 to 1990, the Soviet Army conducted a global topographic mapping program, creating large-scale maps for much of the world that included a diversity of detail that would have supported a full range of military planning. For big cities like New York, Washington, D.C., and London to towns like Pontiac, MI, and Galveston, TX, the Soviets gathered enough information to create street-level maps. The information on these maps ranged from the locations of factories and ports to building heights, road widths, and bridge capacities. Some of the detail suggests early satellite technology, while other specifics, like detailed depictions of depths and channels around rivers and harbors, could only have been gained by Soviet spies on the ground. The Red Atlas includes over 350 extracts from these incredible Cold War maps, exploring their provenance and cartographic techniques as well as what they can tell us about their makers and the Soviet initiatives that were going on all around us.

Book excerpt: Colours make the map: they affect the map’s materiality, content, and handling. With a wide range of approaches, 14 case studies from various disciplines deal with the colouring of maps from different geographical regions and periods. Connected by their focus on the (hand)colouring of the examined maps, the authors demonstrate the potential of the study of colour to enhance our understanding of the material nature and production of maps and the historical, social, geographical and political context in which they were made. Book Synopsis Information and Empire by : Simon Franklin
Download or read book Information and Empire written by Simon Franklin and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century Russia was transformed from a moderate-sized, land-locked principality into the largest empire on earth. How did systems of information and communication shape and reflect this extraordinary change? Information and Mechanisms of Communication in Russia, 1600-1850 brings together a range of contributions to shed some light on this complex question. Communication networks such as the postal service and the gathering and circulation of news are examined alongside the growth of a bureaucratic apparatus that informed the government about its country and its people. The inscription of space is considered from the point of view of mapping and the changing public ‘graphosphere’ of signs and monuments. More than a series of institutional histories, this book is concerned with the way Russia discovered itself, envisioned itself and represented itself to its people. Innovative and scholarly, this collection breaks new ground in its approach to communication and information as a field of study in Russia. More broadly, it is an accessible contribution to pre-modern information studies, taking as its basis a country whose history often serves to challenge habitual Western models of development. It is important reading not only for specialists in Russian Studies, but also for students and non-Russianists who are interested in the history of information and communications.

Download or read book India written by C. H. Philips and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1949, India does not attempt to provide a full history of the country, rather it brings to life the Indian story at the time by relating the position at the time of the new Indian Dominions to their historical background, and on the other hand, to concentrate attention on the political and economic growth of India, and to refer to other aspects when necessary. Therefore, it deals with the political and social legacy of ancient Hindu India and of medieval Muslim India in one chapter at the beginning, and the remainder of the volume is given to the description of the establishment and extension of European political rule and of the Indian reaction to it. Later chapters are concerned especially with India’s struggle for independence and the difficult transition which culminated in the Partition. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1949. The language used and views portrayed are a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.
