Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theologians have long debated the significance of the Jewish religion for the Christian Church. Some scholars see Thomas Aquinas as the leading advocate of the belief that Israel has been superceded by the Church, while others hold that Aquinas avoids supersessionism altogether. The discussion has, however, not always analysed the terminology, nor has it taken into account some of Aquinas's commentaries on Paul's letters, his writings most relevant to the subject. Drawing upon the Pauline commentaries, Matthew Tapie shows that while Aquinas's most commonly articulated view is that the passion of Christ made Jewish worship and the Mosaic law obsolete, Aquinas also advanced views that set this into question, in ways that support Christianteachings affirming the value of post-biblical Judaism. In doing so, he provides both a rich and timely reminder of the ambiguities in Aquinas's thought and makes an important contribution to the literature of supersessionism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the puzzling phenomenon of new veiling practices among lower middle class women in Cairo, Egypt. Although these women are part of a modernizing middle class, they also voluntarily adopt a traditional symbol of female subordination. How can this paradox be explained? An explanation emerges which reconceptualizes what appears to be reactionary behavior as a new style of political struggle--as accommodating protest. These women, most of them clerical workers in the large government bureaucracy, are ambivalent about working outside the home, considering it a change which brings new burdens as well as some important benefits. At the same time they realize that leaving home and family is creating an intolerable situation of the erosion of their social status and the loss of their traditional identity. The new veiling expresses women's protest against this. MacLeod argues that the symbolism of the new veiling emerges from this tense subcultural dilemma, involving elements of both resistance and acquiescence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most prominent story of nineteenth-century German and French Jewry has focused on Jewish adoption of liberal middle-class values. The Modernity of Others points to an equally powerful but largely unexplored aspect of modern Jewish history: the extent to which German and French Jews sought to become modern by criticizing the anti-modern positions of the Catholic Church. Drawing attention to the pervasiveness of anti-Catholic anticlericalism among Jewish thinkers and activists from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, the book turns the master narrative of Western and Central European Jewish history on its head. From the moment in which Jews began to enter the fray of modern European politics, they found that Catholicism served as a convenient foil that helped them define what it meant to be a good citizen, to practice a respectable religion, and to have a healthy family life. Throughout the long nineteenth century, myriad Jewish intellectuals, politicians, and activists employed anti-Catholic tropes wherever questions of political and national belonging were at stake: in theoretical treatises, parliamentary speeches, newspaper debates, the founding moments of the Reform movement, and campaigns against antisemitism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys the Mortara affair of 1858 as an expression of traditional Christian antisemitism, first discussing the case in the context of the Second French Empire. Documents French press and diplomatic reactions to the Church's abduction of the Italian Jewish Edgardo Mortara, who had been converted by a Christian servant. Emphasizes differences between the Mortara and Montel (1840) affairs, and discusses abductions of Jewish children by Church authorities in France between 1852-70. Presents the development of Catholic doctrine and its integration into canonic law in order to decide whether the Mortara case was justified by missionary baptism or antisemitism. Argues that the doctrinal corpus has evolved with regard to baptism, but has remained unchanged concerning antisemitism. Pius IX, who insisted the Mortara child be raised as a Catholic, only repeated age-old antisemitic stereotypes in order to justify the abduction. Discusses the Finaly affair of 1953, and states that abductions of Jewish children may occur as long as antisemitic and absolutist doctrines prevail within the Catholic Church. Emphasizes that the Mortara affair was neutralized, then marginalized in France, where no book has previously been written on the subject. Concludes that Christian antisemitism has survived well into the 20th century, and refutes the dichotomy between Christian and racial, "scientific" antisemitism.
