L’Église va faire fi de ces pensées fausses et de cette vision absurde. À travers son Encyclique Sancta Dei Civitas (1880), le pape Léon XIII appelle les croyants à soutenir les missionnaires et à prendre part à l’oeuvre d’évangélisation. L’Église Catholique se présente comme la mère de la civilisation. Léon XIII place l’Afrique sous la tutelle de l’Église et des États européens. La Conférence de Berlin de 1884/1885 procède au partage de l’Afrique. Le Cameroun est reconnu comme une colonie allemande. Dès 1887, la période du Kulturkampf approche de sa fin lorsque les missionnaires allemands partent pour l’Afrique. Dans leur conférence de Fulda en 1888, les évêques allemands demandent la création de missions dans les colonies allemandes. Par l’intermédiaire de Ludwig Windthorst, homme politique allemand, l’Église Catholique obtient du ministère allemand des Affaires Étrangères l’autorisation d’évangéliser le Cameroun. Cette mission est confiée aux Pallottins, communauté religieuse fondée par un prêtre italien nommé Vincent Pallotti, et qui s’installera plus tard dans le diocèse de Limbourg en Allemagne. Leurs activités au Cameroun seront marquées aussi bien par la création des structures ecclésiales que par la conversion intérieure. L’ouvrage apporte une contribution essentielle à la compréhension des méthodes d’évangélisation des Pallottins au Cameroun de 1890 à 1916 et, lors de leur retour en 1964 jusqu’en 2010. Il les présente comme des acteurs déterminants du dynamisme actuel de la foi vécue par les chrétiens de ce pays. Aloyse Kisito Patrice Essono, prêtre de la Société de l’Apostolat Catholique (Pallottins), a fait ses études en Allemagne. Docteur en histoire de l’Église (université Johann Wolfgang von Goethe de Francfort) en 2012, il exerce aussi comme aumônier à l’aéroport international de Francfort. Dommage que les dirigeants camerounais n'aient jamais réussi à s'inspirer de la démarche ci-dessus et à adopter une ligne de conduite un tant soit peu patriotique. Les politiciens postcoloniaux ont constamment fait montre d'un déconcertant opportunisme. Il peut certes leur arriver de solliciter publiquement ou officieusement l'Eglise à travers ses princes locaux pour accompagner les pouvoirs publics dans la résolution des conflits sociopolitiques. Mais par moments, ils n'hésiteront pas à leur rappeler que l'Eglise ne doit pas se mêler de politique. Elle doit se cantonner dans les affaires spirituelles, oubliant l'un des enseignements les plus mémorables de Mgr Ndongmo, à savoir qu' on ne peut pas conduire les hommes au ciel comme si la terre n'existait pas.
