Book excerpt: This paper considers the role of language in employment outcomes and labour earnings in South Africa over the period 1996-8. Our pooled cross-section comprises more than 160,000 working-age adults, and the analysis considers the decision to participate in the labour force, employment outcomes and labour earnings. After conditioning on a number of socio-economic and demographic factors, we find that having English as one's mother tongue is one of the pivotal determinants of employment and labour earnings. Allowing for language effects leads to a much diminished role of race/population group as a driver of labour market success and earnings. There seems to be little variation in employment outcomes or earnings across the different African languages.

Book Synopsis Trends exhibited in the South African unemployment rate since 2008 by : Veliswa Ntatiso

This book was released on 2023-10-18 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 78%, , course: Labour Economics, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this assignment is to present an approach review concerning the unemployment rate in South Africa and how the government can tackle it and will enlighten South African citizens and outsiders on how unemployment rate rises and effects of unemployment rate yearly. Long-term unemployment puts people impacted and their families under a lot of mental and financial strain. This is also a source of concern for policymakers because high rates of long-term unemployment suggest inefficient labor markets. Since the global financial crisis of 2008, the South African labor market has been characterized by slow job growth for young individuals relative to older workers. Unemployment is a major problem in South Africa and Covid-19 played huge role in decreasing the existing jobs and more people lost their jobs in 2020. And more jobs were lost in the second quarter of 2021 due to looting in some parts of the country.
Book Synopsis Language, Migration and Social Inequalities by : Alexandre Duchêne
Download or read book Language, Migration and Social Inequalities written by Alexandre Duchêne and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration and the mobility of citizens around the globe pose important challenges to the linguistic and cultural homogeneity that nation-states rely on for defining their physical boundaries and identity, as well as the rights and obligations of their citizens. A new social order resulting from neoliberal economic practices, globalisation and outsourcing also challenges traditional ways the nation-state has organized its control over the people who have typically travelled to a new country looking for work or better life chances. This collection provides an account of the ways language addresses core questions concerning power and the place of migrants in various institutional and workplace settings. It brings together contributions from a range of geographical settings to understand better how linguistic inequality is (re)produced in this new economic order.
Book Synopsis The Reconstruction of Post-War Labour Markets in The Southern African Development Community by : Saint José Inaka
Download or read book The Reconstruction of Post-War Labour Markets in The Southern African Development Community written by Saint José Inaka and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of post-war labour market reconstructions, in the context of a regional bloc whose member states have experienced conflict. Focusing on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, the book explores how major conflicts often expose shortcomings in affected countries particularly on their post-war labour market reconstruction processes. The authors discuss how countries in the SADC region in particular are equipped to navigate such processes. This key question drives the overview of relationships between labour market issues and wars of liberation from colonial rule and apartheid, rights to self-determination and racial (in)equality and the need to succinctly explain how labour market issues shaped civil wars in some post-independent SADC member states. The book examines the role of the state in reconstruction processes of post-war labour markets and the contribution of labour market institutions to these reconstructions. It further analyses private sector participation in remaking labour markets and workers’ experiences in finding employment in labour markets under reconstruction. The book provides specific insights from experiences in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Book Synopsis Rethinking the Labour Movement in the 'New South Africa' by : Franco Barchiesi
Download or read book Rethinking the Labour Movement in the 'New South Africa' written by Franco Barchiesi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Title first published in 2003. In recognition of the power of organised labour, the ANC Government elected in 1994 granted South Africa's unions unprecedented legal and constitutional rights. Despite these gains, the country's unions have faced a fresh set of challenges, many of them emanating from their political allies in Government. From Parliament to the factory floor, South Africa's unions are now confronted with threats as dangerous as those they confronted when organising illegally in the heyday of apartheid. The purpose of this book is to examine how South African unions have responded and how well prepared they are to meet the challenges that confront them in the new millennium.

Book Synopsis Challenging the Market by : International Working Group on Labour Market Regulation and Deregulation
Download or read book Challenging the Market written by International Working Group on Labour Market Regulation and Deregulation and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two decades economic and social policy in most of the world has been guided by the notion that economies function best when they are fully exposed to competitive market forces. In labour market policy, this approach is reflected in the widespread emphasis on "flexibility" - a euphemism for the retrenchment of income support and social security, the relaxation of labour market regulations, and the enhanced power of private actors to determine the terms of the employment relationship. These strategies have had marked effects on labour market outcomes, leading to greater vulnerability and polarization - and not always in ways that enhance worker-centred flexibility. The authors offer a more balanced analysis of the functioning and effects of labour market regulation and deregulation. By questioning the underpinnings of the "flexibility" paradigm, and revealing its often damaging impacts (on different countries, sectors, and constituencies), they challenge the conclusion that unregulated market forces produce optimal labour market outcomes. The authors conclude with several suggestions for how labour policy could be reformulated to promote both efficiency and equity.

Download or read book Language in South Africa written by Victor Webb and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002-08-08 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language in South Africa (LiSA) debates the role of language and language planning in the reconstruction, development and transformation of post-apartheid democratic South Africa. The 1996 constitution of South Africa is founded on the political philosophy of pluralism and is directed at promoting democratic values, equity and non-discrimination, human rights, national unity and the development of all the country’s communities. The question asked in LiSA is how language planning can contribute towards the attainment of these national ideals. Set against the language political realities of the country — the a-symmetric power relations between the languages; the striking differences in the structural; functional and symbolic adaptation of the official languages; and the many language-related problems in the country — it debates the role of language in state administration, national integration, educational development and economic development. The volume concludes with a discussion of language development and language management.
