Book excerpt: "In one volume this book seems to encompass all the plants native and exotic grown in Florida. No small feat! . . . No other reference work that I know of covers the field as comprehensively as this."--Edward Golden, horticutural consultant and past president, Sarasota Orchid Society From Florida to California and on to Hawaii, gardeners who want a current, thorough, and user-friendly guide to the common indoor foliage and outdoor landscape plants for U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 8, 9, 10, and 11 will welcome this fully illustrated book. With precise line drawings for nearly 500 plant species, the work presents a description of cultivated ferns, cone-bearing plants, and flowering ornamental plants for warmer climates. It offers a description of the families, essential identifying features, and horticultural information for each plant, including origin, cold hardiness zones, propagation techniques, and soil, fertilizer, irrigation, and light requirements. The author also discusses identification features under clearly demarcated headings of growth habit, foliage, stem and bark, flower, and fruit. With a comprehensive glossary of terms commonly used in plant identification and a cross-referenced index of common and scientific names, readers will be able to find information with minimal effort. This book is intended for use by backyard gardeners and will be especially handy for newcomers to warm temperate and subtropical areas who seek a reliable resource for plant selection and care. In addition, it will be indispensable to garden clubs, volunteer Master Gardeners, nursery professionals, extension agents, and landscape architects. It also can serve as a plant identification text for students of environmental horticulture, forestry, and other plant science-related fields. Bijan Dehgan is professor of environmental horticulture at the University of Florida. He is internationally recognized for his taxonomic and horticultural research and major publications on the endangered sago palms (cycads) and the physic nuts (Jatropha).

Book excerpt: There has been a steady increase in the demand of ornamental plants of tropic and sub-tropics in open field and protected structure for the production of flowers of superior quality and attractive pot plants including species and cultivars of house plants for a regular supply to domestic and export market round the year. During the last six decades, with the increase in awareness of the serious adverse effects of environmental pollution and climate change on living beings on the earth, deforestation, roadside plantation, landscaping, development of botanic gardens, arboretums, parks, private and public gardens have created a great demand for planting materials. In view of the facts stated above, it was considered necessary to bring out a publication comprising all major aspects of ornamental horticulture suitable for tropical and subtropical regions. Accordingly, the present publication entitled 'Tropical and Subtropical Garden Plants (In colour)' would be an authentic publication on the subject with more than 3000 colour illustrations in 540 pages, for providing a comprehensive knowledge on the major groups of ornamental plants for the benefit of students, researchers, nurserymen, landscape consultants, amateur and professional flower growers in tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Book excerpt: The idea of mixing tropical plants with perennials and hardy annuals has been around since Victorian times. It is now enjoying a newfound popularity because tropical plants are more widely available. Gardeners who want to bring the lush beauty of tropicals to an existing garden, or who want to create an authentic vintage garden, will delight in The Exotic Garden. Although tropicals are novelties in temperate climates, they can successfully be grown anywhere. Iversen shows how tropicals can easily be used as annuals to perk up a garden with color during non-blooming seasons. The author's expert advice shows how to grow tropicals in beds, borders, and containers, select and combine plants, and use the tools of color, texture, and form. Plus, there are special overwintering tips and a full color glossary of more than 100 plants.

Selecting plants suited to your climate is the first step toward a thriving, largely self-sustaining garden that connects with and supports the natural world. With gentle and compelling text and stunning photographs of plants in garden settings, Gardening in Summer-Dry Climates by Nora Harlow and Saxon Holt is a guide to native and climate-adapted plants for summer-dry, winter-wet climates of North America's Pacific coast. Knowing what these climates share and how and why they differ, you can choose to make gardens that maintain and expand local and regional biodiversity, take little from the earth that is not returned, and welcome and accommodate the presence of wildlife. With global warming, it is now even more critical that we garden in tune with climate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horticulture has remained far behind in understanding of botanical principles. Recent phylogenetic (DNA-based) reorganization of higher plants has revolutionized taxonomic treatments of all biological entities, even when morphology does not completely agree with their organization. This book is an example of applying principals of botanical phylogenetic taxonomy to assemble genera, species, and cultivars of 200 vascular plant families of ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms that are cultivated for enhancement of human living space; homes, gardens, and parks. The emphases are on cultivated species but examples of some plants are often shown in the wild and in landscapes. In providing descriptions, it is assumed that students and other interested individuals have no background in general botany (plant characteristics), or nomenclature. Fundamental features of all plant groups discussed are fully illustrated by original watercolor drawings or photographs. Discussion of the families is grounded on recent botanical phylogenetic treatments, which is based on common ancestry (monophyly). Of course, phylogenetic taxonomy is not a new concept, and was originally based on morphological characteristics; it is the DNA-based phylogeny that has revolutionized modern biological classifications. In practical terms, this book represents the horticultural treatment that corresponds to phylogenetic-based botanical taxonomy, to which is added cultigens and cultivated genera and species. Hence, the harmony between horticultural and botanical taxonomy. This book covers phylogenetic-based taxonomy of Ferns, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms (Monocots). A companion volume covers Angiosperms (Eudicots).

Adaptation to locality, self-town vegetation, designs for both short-term and long-term effect, ecological planting, and plant associations are described. The text looks at planting for forestry. The need for afforestation; forest habitat; scale of the forest mosaic; and woodlands as visual elements in the landscape are considered. The book puts emphasis on trees in urban areas, shrubs and groundcover, and herbaceous plants and bulbs. The text also focuses on water plants. The use of water plants in garden design, aquatic communities, and historical background are discussed. The book underscores the use and management of plant species native to Britain in landscaping; urban landscape and roof gardens; and how to transplant semi-mature trees. The text also describes reclamation and planting of industrial and urban wastelands; landscaping of reservoir margins; and the relationship of plants and air pollution. The book also puts emphasis on the use of vegetation in slope stabilization; planting in tropical lowland areas; planting in hot, arid climates; and the functional use of Australian plants. The selection is a must for readers interested in landscaping.
