Download or read book Landscape Performance written by Bo Yang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian McHarg’s ecological planning approach has been influential since the 20th century. However, few empirical studies have been conducted to evaluate the performance of his projects. Using the framework of landscape performance assessment, this book demonstrates the long-term benefits of a renowned McHargarian project (The Woodlands town development) through quantitative and qualitative methods. Including 44 black and white illustrations, Landscape Performance systematically documents the performance benefits of the environmental, social, and economic aspects of The Woodlands project. It delves into McHarg’s planning success in The Woodlands in comparison with adjacent Houston developments, which demonstrated urban resilience after Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Lastly, it identifies the ingredients of McHarg’s ability to do real and permanent good. Yang also includes a number of appendices which provide valuable information on the methods of assessing performance in landscape development. This book would be beneficial to academics and students of landscape architecture and planning with a particular interest in Ian McHarg.

Download or read book Coney Island written by Zoe Ryan and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost 100 years, Coney Island was the most popular seaside destination in the United States. Eachyear, millions escaped the heat of New York City to savor the thrills of the Cyclone roller coaster and Wonder Wheel at the Astroland amusement park. They came to sample an original Nathan's Famous hot dog, witness the first demolition derby, or to take a chance at a game of three-card Monte on the legendary boardwalk. The advent of air-conditioning, concerns about Coney's "tawdry" entertainment, and faster transportation to other beaches hastened the demise of what had become a uniquely American icon of entertainment and a defining terminus of New York at the water's edge. In an effort to revitalize the area, the Van Alen Institute, in concert with the Coney Island Development Corporation, held the Parachute Pavilion Competition, a contest to design a year-round pavilion in the shadow of the Parachute Jump, a landmark built for the 1939 World's Fair. Coney Island: The Parachute Pavilion Competition presents all 864 submissionsfrom the feasible to the fantasticreceived from around the world. The winning design by London-based Carmody Groarke Hardie is a mesmerizing attraction in its own right, composed of two provocative trapezoids illuminated by thousands of colored light bulbs. The design respects the historic icon under which it is located but also promises to become an icon in its own right and bring the fun-loving spirit of Coney Island into the twenty-first century. Featuring essays, photographic documentation, and jury comments, Coney Island: The Parachute Pavilion Competition is a critical resource for students, designers, city officials, and anyone interested in Coney Island and the reinvention of the historic recreation sites of our cities.

Book Synopsis Felder's Comprehensive, 2005 Edition by : Nick Felder
Download or read book Felder's Comprehensive, 2005 Edition written by Nick Felder and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every industry has its standard professional directory -- advertising has its Black Book, manufacturing its Thomas's Register -- except, that is, for architecture...and design...and construction. While there are dozens of smaller directories, each addressing a specific market niche, none speak to all three industries in a comprehensive way. And larger product directories, like Sweets, are advertising driven and therefore incomplete. Felder's Comprehensive is the first pan-industry guide of its kind, and it is many times more comprehensive than the nearest competitor. It is an annual desk reference, directory, and product source guide with more reference information than any other title currently available. It contains thousands of listings of time-sensitive and timeless reference information for anyone involved in the business or practice of architecture, design, design/build, construction, interior design, facility management, and real-estate development. For example, readers can find listings for more than 12,000 manufacturers of furnishings, fixtures, equipment, and materials listed alphabetically, and, most importantly, by product category. Felder's also lists design competitions, domestic and international trade shows, trade publications and other media, trade associations, professional organizations, and more. Most sections are indexed and cross-referenced for easy referral and identification. Felder's is the first truly comprehensive reference guide of its kind for the A/E/C marketplace and is certain to become the industry standard.

This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Winner of the 2016 Bronze medal in Architecture, Independent Publisher Book Awards] This book comprises a series of 22 case studies by renowned experts and new scholars in the field of architecture competition research. In 2015, it constitutes the most comprehensive survey of the dynamics behind the definition, organization, judging, archiving and publishing of architectural, landscape and urban design competitions in the world. These richly documented contributions revolve around a few questions that can be summarized in a two-fold critical interrogation: How can design competitions - these historical democratic devices, both praised and dreaded by designers - be considered laboratories for the production of environmental design quality, and, ultimately, for the renewing of culture and knowledge? Includes 340 illustrations, bibliographical references and index of over 200 cited competitions. Keywords: Architecture / International competitions / Architectural judgment / Design thinking / Digital archiving (databases) / Architectural publications / Architectural experimentation / Landscape architecture / Urban studies
