Book excerpt: Considerable emphasis has been placed on the interactions between environmental change and forests in recent years. Reports have been produced detailing scenarios of forest development associated with particular changes in climate. Similarly, scenarios have been produced looking at likely trends in air quality. However, many studies have failed to recognize that some of the biggest changes for forests are related to the socioeconomicenvironment rather that the physical environment. This book considers the interactions between forestry and environmental (climatic) change, from social and economic perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land allocation use specialization is a forest management strategy designed to accommodate the wide array of values present on the forested landscape, having the potential to enhance both environmental and industrial uses of the forest. The details of such a strategy, however, are not fixed, being case specific. The challenge is to define the basis for zoning considering the multiplicity of values expected from each particular forestland base. Therefore, this work explores the implications of different zoning approaches for land allocation in the Prince George Forest District of central British Columbia, Canada. To do so, three objectives were set: a) evaluate the consequences of different zoning strategies on a specific forestland base b) examine the effects of different area proportions among categories on the land use allocation and c) explore how expected future climate change may affect land use allocation in the study area. The methodology consisted of defining the basic values expected by stakeholders from the forest land base and combining them using three different zoning approaches: three-zone, four-zone and multiple-zone. Results show that the zoning approach has major influences on the results, increasing spatial distribution and fragmentation with an increase in the number of zones. Furthermore, the increase in target area of a specific category results in its greater distribution over the landscape and better representation of the variety of landscapes found in the study area. Finally, climate change predictions can be proactively incorporated in land use plans, creating more robust land use plants. The methodology employed in this work enables the amalgamation of multiple sources of information to define forest values, it is flexible and it also provides spatially explicit allocation maps easy to assimilate. --P. ii.

Book excerpt: Presents a summary of legislation (including the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act and regulations), chief forester's policies and procedures, and related information regarding higher level plans related to provincial forestry. It contains direction that must be followed when preparing certain higher level plans and is intended for use by authorised decision-makers such as district managers and designated environmental officials. Higher level plans establish the broader, strategic context for operational plans, providing objectives that determine the mix of forest resources to be managed in a given area. Sections of this summary cover plans in two categories: those directly enabled through Part 2 of the Act, including objectives for resource management zones, landscape units, and sensitive areas; and those developed under non-Code legislation or policy. Includes glossary.

Book excerpt: This paper explains the concepts of fuzzy set theory and applies them to the problem of allocating public forest land on Vancouver Island among competing land uses. Two principal sources of fuzziness are identified: those related to uncertainty in classification (specification of management objectives) and those related to uncertainty concerning how actions affect objectives (imprecise technical coefficients). Comparing the results of classical and fuzzy decision models enables determination of which approach provides improved results, and which is more consistent with the political decision-making process in British Columbia.

Book excerpt: Foresters and natural resource managers must balance conflicting objectives when developing land-management plans. Conflicts may encompass economic, environmental, social, cultural, technical, and aesthetic objectives. Selecting the best combination of management uses from numerous objectives is difficult and challenging. Multi-Criteria Decision Models (MCDM) provide a systematic means for comparing tradeoffs and selecting alternatives that best satisfy the decisionmakergass objectives. In recent years, the use of MCDM in forestry and natural resources management has generated a substantial body of literature. This annotated bibliography includes 124 important references ranging from theoretical studies to real-world applications of MCDM.
