Tables and charts presented in this handbook make this information readily available for field use. Significant limitations in the available data are identified.

Freshwater ecosystems will likely experience a disproportionate impact relative to other tropical ecosystems. My dissertation research takes an interdisciplinary approach to examine interactions between humans and their environment in lowland tropical watersheds of Belize, Central America. I present results from a rapid assessment technique (Chapter 2) designed to estimate the intensity of impacts on freshwater ecosystems stemming from riparian zone land use practices. The technique provides an accessible, low-tech method for identifying river reaches experiencing high degrees of impact. Chapter 3 also examines riparian zone land use practices and focuses on the use of agrochemicals by small-scale Q'eqchi' Maya farmers. A high percentage of farmers in the Temash River watershed of Belize are cultivating corn within riparian zones and are using herbicides without adequate training. The continued use of herbicides in these riparian zone farms represents an emerging threat to both human and ecosystem health in the Temash River.

Watershed assessments were conducted for (1) several small rivers in southern Maryland, (2) Arizona's San Pedro River, and (3) California's Sacramento River. In this report, we comparatively analyze the three case-study approaches in order to develop recommendations that may be useful as guidance to others conducting similar assessments. Key insights gained from these studies include: 1. Prioritize locations for studies to maximize decision support. 2. Target selection of stakeholders, establish credibility of underlying methods and models, and incorporate incentives for mutually beneficial results. 3. Provide essential climate science capabilities and tools to project teams. 4. Develop model linkages at the onset, carry out assessment activities at multiple scales, and require explicit uncertainty analysis of results. The watershed assessment case studies described in this report yield richness of detail in terms of methods and results, as well as inform more generally on best practices for conducting future watershed assessments. However these were pioneering studies addressing difficult and complex problems. Future assessments will continue to refine the understanding of how to maximize decision support, including providing necessary keystone capabilities and tools to effectively estimate climate change vulnerabilities, developing and supporting successful stakeholder processes, and characterizing uncertainty and scaling or transferring results to increase their relevance.

Book excerpt: Increasing water resource problems such as accelerated sedimentation, drying-up springs, and downstream eutrophication were reported in Indonesian water bodies, especially in Java. The growing pressures on watershed due to land use land cover change (LULC) was perceived as the cause of watershed degradation. Information about the nature of LULC change and drivers were poorly understood, how LULC plays a role in generating runoff was unknown, and what factors governing the variability of water quality (TSS and Chl-a) in water ecosystems like reservoirs is unavailable. This study aims at improving the understanding on relationship between LULC change (1995-2015), drivers, impacts on runoff and water quality. Upper Brantas was chosen as the study state, representing a typical urbanized tropical watershed in developing countries. Varying methods were used covering remote sensing, GIS and SWAT modelling. Findings revealed the direct and indirect causes of LULC change with agricultural expansion, population growth, infrastructure, accessibility, economic, social and cultural factors jointly affected the LULC change. Major LULC change trajectories were forest to dryland agriculture, dryland-agriculture to rice-field, and rice-field/dryland agriculture to settlement. Urban areas became the land use type exhibits the fastest growth, being doubled in a 21-year period. Forest conversion, farm loss, and rapid uncontrollable settlement development appear to be the challenges for land use planning. SWAT-based assessment results showed that the LULC change over the past 21 years led to subtle increase in surface runoff, water yield, and decrease in ground water. Among these, surface runoff was the most affected variable with relative increase of 8%. Forest conversion both to settlement or dryland agriculture generated greater impact in generating runoff, followed by dryland agriculture conversion to urban. Long-term TSS and Chl-a assessment showed that TSS in all reservoirs was closely associated with rainfall and discharge. This amplifies the needs for runoff management from existing land use practices. On the other hand, the Chl-a variability appeared to be influenced both by internal and external conditions of each reservoir as well as the corresponding draining watershed. The findings suggest the watershed management cannot be generalized due to large variability in land use and watershed physical conditions.
