Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulp and paper mill industries are always associated with the disposal problem of highly contaminated sludge or bio-solids. The development of innovative systems to maximize recovery of useful materials and/or energy in a sustainable way has become necessary. The management of wastes, in particular of industrial waste, in an economically and environmentally acceptable manner is one of the most critical issues facing modern industry, mainly due to the increased difficulties in properly locating disposal works and complying with even more stringent environmental quality requirements imposed by legislation. This book presents a general Introduction on waste management in the pulp and paper industry and contains topics on the generation of waste in pulp and paper mills, waste composition, methods of sludge pre-treatment, processes and technologies for conversion of pulp and paper mill waste into valuable products, waste reduction techniques employed in the pulp and paper Industry worldwide and future trends.

These included (1) changes occurring within a temporary sludge stockpile, and (2) spatial variability of application to the site. Understanding the magnitude of such changes will assist in accounting for variability inherent in such land application operations.

Book excerpt: Biovalorisation of Wastes to Renewable Chemicals and Biofuels addresses advanced technologies for converting waste to biofuels and value-added products. Biovalorisation has several advantages over conventional bioremediation processes as it helps reduce the costs of bioprocesses. Examples are provided of several successfully commercialized technologies, giving insight into developing, potential processes for biovalorisation of different wastes. Different bioprocess strategies are discussed for valorising the wastes coming from the leather industry, olive oil industry, pulp and paper, winery, textile, and food industries, as well as aquaculture. A section on biorefinery for hydrocarbons and emerging contaminants is included to cover concepts on biodesulfurization of petroleum wastes, leaching of heavy metals from E - waste, and bioelectrochemical processes for CO2. Chapters on algal biorefinery are also included to focus on the technologies for conversion of CO2 sequestration and wastewater utilization. Biovalorisation of Wastes to Renewable Chemicals and Biofuels can be used as course material for graduate students in chemical engineering, chemistry, and biotechnology, and as a reference for industrial professionals and researchers who want to gain a basic understanding on the subject. Covers a wide range of topics, from the conversion of wastes to organic acids, biofuels, biopolymers and industrially relevant products Bridges the gap between academics and industry Written in a lucid and self-explanatory style Includes activities/quiz/critical questions

This book was released on 2002 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pulp and paper mills have to dispose of the resulting "sludge" recovered from the secondary treatment systems. An alternative to disposal by incineration or landfills is surface land application. Benefits to the productivity of the soil and enhanced crop yields are gained by improving nutrient availability and increasing organic matter in the soil. An application rate of 50 t/ha/year is recommended. An application rate that is too high could cause adverse effects to the soil and water or an application rate that is too low could not have any beneficial effects at all. The objective of this report is to assess the environmental impact of surface spreading of pulp mill sludge on soil quality and surface water quality when applied to a Boreal forest setting. The sludge increases the carbon to nitrogen ratio, increases the plant available nitrogen but does not have a significant effect on the soil pH. The increase in crop yield and competing vegetation is an indicator of an increase in soil quality. The major limitations of land application of sludge are heavy metals and/or Organochlorine contamination of surface water. Also of concern is the nitrogen load for the sludge, the possibility of increase amounts of nitrates leaching into the water and bacteria entering the water from sludge application. With proper application methods and testing, the application of pulp mill sludge at a rate of 50 t/ha/year can be done safely with no adverse affects to the soil quality or the surface water quality."--P. iii.

Book excerpt: Biosolids (appropriately treated sewage sludge) can make an important contribution to sustainable environmental management, through the return of organic material, trace elements, moisture and nutrients to our soils. The Guidelines for Environmental Management: Biosolids Land Application enables this beneficial use of biosolids, by providing a management framework that ensures any chemical and microbiological risks are appropriately managed.
