This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects the papers given at the European Workshop "Theoretical and Experimental Investigations of Hadronic Few-Body Systems" which, adhering to an invitation of the European Few-Body Physics Research Committee, was organized in Rome on October 7-11, 1986. All papers presented at the workshop appear in the volume, plus two papers which could not be presented orally because their authors were at the last moment unable to attend. The list of contents closely follows the programme of the workshop. The workshop, attended by 128 American, European, and Japanese physicists from 60 different institutions and universities, was sponsored by the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (lNFN) and was organized by the INFN Section located at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS), which kindly provided the venue for the meeting and many related facilities. The goal of the workshop was to summarize the present situa tion and the future perspectives concerning the theoretical descriptions of strongly interacting few-body systems and their experimental investigation by electromagnetic and hadronic probes, mainly at intermediate energies. To this end, representatives from most international groups working within different theoretical methods and with different experimental facilities, were invited and asked to illustrate their latest results and future research programs; the intention was to provide, by this way, an impartial and broad information which could be useful to whom is actively working in few body physics, as well as to young students entering this field of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume presents an attempt to construct a unified cognitive theory of science in relatively short compass. It confronts the strong program in sociology of science and the positions of various postpositivist philosophers of science, developing significant alternatives to each in a reeadily comprehensible sytle. It draws loosely on recent developments in cognitive science, without burdening the argument with detailed results from that source. . . . The book is thus a provocative one. Perhaps that is a measure of its value: it will lead scholars and serious student from a number of science studies disciplines into continued and sharpened debate over fundamental questions."—Richard Burian, Isis "The writing is delightfully clear and accessible. On balance, few books advance our subject as well."—Paul Teller, Philosophy of Science

Book Synopsis Condensed Matter Theories by : F. B. Malik
Download or read book Condensed Matter Theories written by F. B. Malik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This the first volume of the proceedings of the International Workshop on Condensed Matter Theories published by a commercial publisher and of a series which is planned to appear anually. It is a tribute to the group of scientists who started this workshop as the Pan American Workshop on Conden sed Matter Theories in 1977 and helped to develop it to a significant annual international workshop. Many scientists' efforts have contributed to this important development and it is impossible to name all of them. But at least three persons are to be singled out: Professors Manuel de Llano and Angel Plastino who conceived the idea of the annual workshop and carried it for ward, and Professor John W. Clark who has been the prime driving force be hind it in recent years. The Workshop started in 1977 in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as the first Pan American Workshop on Condensed Matter Theories with the idea of bringing together scientists from the Western Hemisphere working in many different areas of Condensed Matter Theories for the purpose of cross-fertilization of ideas used in different areas and fostering collaborations among them. The next five Workshops were held at Trieste, Italy, in 1978; in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1979; in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1980; in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1981; and in St. Louis, Missouri, U. S. A. , in 1982.

Book Synopsis Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes by : Charles J. Horowitz
Download or read book Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes written by Charles J. Horowitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of the "International Conference on Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes" are presented in this volume. This conference was held in Telluride, Colorado, March 14-17, 1988, and was the fourth in the Telluride series of nuclear physics conferences. A continuing theme in the Telluride conference series has been the complementarity of various intermediate-energy projectiles for elucidating the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear structure. Earlier conferences have contributed significantly to an understanding of spin currents in nuclei, in particular the distribution of Gamow-Teller strength using charge-exchange reactions. The previous conference on "Antinucleon and Nucleon Nucleus Interactions" compared nuclear information from tra tional probes to recent results from antinucleon reactions. The 1988 conference on Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes, put special emphasis on spin observables and brought together experts using spin information to probe nuclear structure. Spin observables have provided very detailed information about nuclear structure and reactions. Since the 1985 Telluride conference we have seen data from new focal plane polarimeters at LAMPF, TRIUMF, IUCF and elsewhere. In addition, spin observables provide an important common ground between electron and hadron scattering physics. In the future we look forward to new facilities such as NTOF for polarized neutron measurements at Los Alamos and a vigorous spin program at CEBAF.

Book Synopsis Weak Interactions in Nuclei by : Barry R. Holstein
Download or read book Weak Interactions in Nuclei written by Barry R. Holstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently a symbiotic relationship between particle and nuclear physics has developed, with techniques and ideas from one field fertilizing developments in the other. This work outlines concepts from modern particle physics important to the current understanding of nuclear physics and reviews experiments involving nuclei which have influenced the present particle physics view of the weak interaction. In his discussion, the author summarizes both past and present activity in the field and identifies areas for future work. Familiarity with quantum mechanics is assumed in the presentation of ideas in this book intended for readers at the graduate level and beyond. A major goal of Weak Interactions in Nuclei is to encourage further activity at the intersection of particle and nuclear physics, two path-breaking areas of study in modern physics. Originally published in 1989. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
