Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a geo-historical place, the beach integrates a variety of characteristics and functions so multiple that they tend to contradict each other. The beach is both a place of work and trade but also of leisure; it is both a place of therapy and health but also of migration, war, and death; it is a place of mass tourism and boredom but also the place of experiencing the Other; it is a public place but also an uncivilized and desolate place. This book studies the literary representation of the beach from ancient Greek literature up until today, drawing on English, French, Italian, American, and Spanish literatures from various periods and genres and presenting multiple ways of comparing and understanding literary beaches as a ubiquitous literary phenomenon. It demonstrates how the literary beach as a both geo-historical place and as an aesthetic literary commonplace has been a constant and privileged resource for the analysis of more general existential, sociological, and moral problems. This is the case when for instance the Tahitian beach becomes the place of the "already modern" in Stevenson's tales, or when the Italian beach becomes a question of modern feminism in Ferrante. In this sense, literature expands the local or national beach by articulating its transnational complexities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kitchenary is a unique combination of Italian cooking terms and attitudes regarding cuisine presented in Italian and English. University Italian instructor Brook Nestor brings 18 years of insight to the impassioned cook, traveler and language buff. Discover little-known facts about staples in the Italian diet: was pasta imported from China? Learn language subtleties like the difference between salami and salumi or tavola and tavolo. Want to be a welcome guest? Find out how to eat, speak and act at an Italian table. Italians have a great sense of pride regarding their culinary history, particularly for their regional dishes. However, their traditions are being threatened by modern industry and the encroachment of corporate interests in the food sector. This has led to the establishment of such organizations as Slow Food, dedicated to preserving all aspects of culinary tradition, including the sacrosanct activity of consuming a meal at an Italian table. Enjoy familiarizing yourself with these terms and becoming proficient in Italian kitchenese. Cooking speaks to all the senses at the same time, so whether you watch, participate or simply follow your nose to the table, these words will be meaningful to you: Buon appetito

Book excerpt: A period of turmoil, uncertainty, and fears, the second half of the nineteenth century in Italy is also characterized by resilience, creativity, courageous discussions on the emancipation of women, and a variety of cultural products that are instrumental for the birth of a new and modern culture that will lead to the achievements of the twentieth century. Contributing to and expanding on recent scholarships on Italian literature of the nineteenth century, the book presents a series of literary, interdisciplinary and intercultural case studies. These case studies explore the social and cultural dimensions of the period, investigating the historical, literary, artistic, cultural, and social events of the time while probing their significance and relevance in bridging new Italian cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: A woman goes home to Naples after her mother’s mysterious death in a “tour de force” by the New York Times–bestselling author of My Brilliant Friend (Seattle Times). Following her mother’s untimely and unexplained drowning, which was preceded by a series of strange phone calls, forty-five-year-old Delia leaves Rome and embarks on a voyage of discovery through the beguiling yet often hostile streets of her native Naples. She is searching for the truth about her family and the men in her mother’s life, past and present, including an abusive husband. What she discovers will be more unsettling than she imagines, but will also reveal truths about herself, in this psychological mystery marked by “tactile, beautifully restrained prose” (Publishers Weekly) about mothers and daughters and the complicated knot of lies and emotions that binds them. “Ferrante’s polished language belies the rawness of her imagery.” —The New Yorker “With the quick-paced mystery guiding the story, Delia explores her relationship with her mother, unraveling memories and secrets repressed since childhood and coming to terms with an upbringing filled with jealousy and violence . . . Troubling Love is vivid and powerful.” —Library Journal
