Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lake States Forests and the Pulp and Paper Industry Only about million acres of the region's saw timber is in old-growth stands; the remaining 49 million acres of forest is in second growth stands or in denuded areas. The large proportion of land that is understocked and denuded indicates clearly that the forest potentialities of the region are far from being realized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Record of the Timber Cut From Forests of the Lake States, 1954 It is natural to assume that to meet the needs of 1954, it is rather startling to note that only the a growing populace, ever - increasing quantities of raw wood materials channeled to the pulp and paper rough forest products are being harvested each industry have shown any great increase. For most year. Records show, however, that this is not other products, such as lumber logs, veneer logs, entirely true in the Lake States. Comparing the fuelwood, and utility poles, the cutting trend in average quantities of rough forest products har recent years has largely been downward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpwood Production in Lake States Counties, 1961 This report is the last of the Station Paper Series by the Lake States Forest Experiment Station. In January 1963, a new series will begin called the U. S. Forest Service Research Paper series, Papers in this series originating at the Lake States Station will be designated with LS preceding the number. The volume of timber cut annually varies by areas within States. Although many products are difficult to trace to county of origin, pulpwood origin can be traced with accuracy. Knowing the production of pulpwood, which. Is a major Lake States product, makes it possible to estimate the production of all products and the resulting timber cut by counties and county groups. The last section in this report presents, for each Forest Survey district, estimates of the timber cut for all products from the six principal pulpwood species. The tables are followed by charts compar ing this estimate with the previous year's estimate of timber cut. While not as reliable as the pulpwood production figures, which came from a 100-percent canvass, the total timber cut estimates give an indication of the trend of cutting in these important species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of the Lake States Region A number of sawmills and other wood - using plants in the Lake States have closed during the past decade, and some concern has been felt for the security of others because of a progressive decline in quantity, quality, and availability of standing timber. A major purpose of the survey, therefore, Was to determine the extent of remaining timber sup plies, the wood requirements of local industries, and the possibilities of meeting these requirements through proper management of the forest resources. Consideration was also given to the possibility of developing new industries to utilize materials hitherto left in the woods or wasted in the logging and milling process. While this report deals primarily with physical resources, the underlying purpose has been to measure the capacity of the forests to contribute to local revenue, employment. And community welfare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpwood Production in Lakes States Counties, 1960 Timber cutting rates vary from year to year. Frequent measure ment is required to maintain a current, useful picture of the balances between timber cut, timber growth, and desirable out. To partially meet this need the Station publishes summaries of the output of various timber products as often as reliable data can be acquired. Reports of pulpwood output by States have been published each year since 1946. This is the second report on pulpwood cut by counties in the Lake States region (see maps following this page). All of the 59 mills using Lake States timber in 1960 furnished figures on their wood receipts by State and county of origin. The help of the many pulp and paper mill officials who took part in this canvass is gratefully acknowledged. Thanks are also due to Ray Pfeifer, Forest Survey Coordinator, Michigan Department of Conservation, for collecting data for the Michigan pulp mills. The volume of timber cut annually varies by areas within States. Although many products are difficult to trace to county of origin, pulp wood origin can be traced with good accuracy. Knowing the production of pulpwood, which'is a major Lake States product, makes it possible to estimate the production of all products and the resulting timber cut by counties and county groups. The last section in this report presents, for each Forest Survey district, estimates of the timber cut for all products from the six principal pulpwood species. The tables are followed by charts comparing this estimate with the most recent previous estimate of timber cut. While not as reliable as the pulpwood production figures, which came from a loo-percent canvass, the total timber cut estimates give an indi cation of the trend of cutting in these important species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Lake States Forest Experiment Station, 1923-1955 Although this list is limited to papers written by, or in collaboration with, Lake States personnel, many of the studies reported on were conducted in cooperation with others: forestry schools, state conservation departments, private industry, and federal agencies. Originally the compilation of publications through 1951 was made by Helen A. Woodworth and published as Station Paper 15. The material in the following pages was as sembled by Lucille P. Olsen, editor. She has broadened the classification scheme to include the newer areas of research and has added publications issued since 1951. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing Forests of the Lake and Central States Region To summarize briefly: . Many changes are taking place in the forests of this vast midcontinent region; some are strengthening the forest economy, others should be of cbncern, In the Lake States, the most significant points are the thickening up of forest stands in recent years, the presence of a sizable area of deforested land, the expanding reforestation program, and the stabilized ownership situation, Also of interest are the favorable outlook for aspen in the next two decades, the concern about maintaining conifers, and the expanding supply of oak, Improvement of timber quality is an important need, In the Central States we find, as we did in the Lake States, increases in timber volume and area planted, Of special concern is fire in the Ozarks, regionwide grazing, and the high percentage of low-quality hardwoods, These are all problems to Watch, think about, and act on, Present programs are positive forces tending to shape the future and give reason for-optimism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Forest-Wildlife Problems in the Lake States Forests consist of more than trees; they are communities of inter related organisms living together. Trees are only one part of this community. All these organisms influence each other. Considerable study of these inter relationships has been made, but we still do not understand all the basic biological factors that govern them. Our efforts have been concentrated on the more obvious causes and effects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Products of the United States, 1906 The total quantity of wood which it was necessary to out in the forests in order to obtain the products listed was probably not less than 20' billion cubie feet. As is Well known, there is a large amount of waste in the conversion of a tree into lumber, shingles, ties, and other products. It is conservatively estimated that on the whole less than 50 percent of a tree finally goes into merchantable form under present conditions of forest utilization. The manufacturers of the more valuable woods reduce the percentage of waste through the use of finer saws and other means of economy, but even with these methods a large. Amount of waste must necessarily arise. The utili zation of this waste is one of the most important problems now be fore the manufacturer. It is perhaps not too much to anticipate that some day nearly all of the waste which oan not be worked into other forms will be utilized by chemical means, the most promising Ones at present being distillation and the Irianufaoture of pulp.
