Book Synopsis Greetings from Bertrand Island Amusement Park by : Martin Kane
Download or read book Greetings from Bertrand Island Amusement Park written by Martin Kane and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age before jets, air-conditioning, and superhighways, Lake Hopatcong was a major northeast resort. It lay within easy reach of large cities to the east, and its size and setting at over nine hundred feet above sea level made it a perfect holiday destination. From the late nineteenth century through World War II, more than forty lake hotels and rooming houses welcomed thousands of vacationers each year. After the war, the lake continued to be a popular spot for renting a bungalow or buying a summer cottage. But for many, Lake Hopatcong will always be remembered as the home of Bertrand Island Park. Although Bertrand Island Park closed in 1983, there is no place in northwestern New Jersey that is more fondly remembered. For some seventy years, the park thrilled youngsters and adults alike. The park opened during the peak of Lake Hopatcong's resort years, and its popularity continued as the lake evolved from a hotel resort to a community of second homes and finally into a year-round locale. Generations of school groups, church outings, company picnics, and residents from throughout the region delighted in the wooden roller coaster, the magical carousel, and the scores of other rides and games.

Book Synopsis The Story of Waterloo Village: From Colonial Forge to Canal Town by : John R. Giles
Download or read book The Story of Waterloo Village: From Colonial Forge to Canal Town written by John R. Giles and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First established in the 1700s as a forge village, Waterloo--located in Sussex County, New Jersey--has endured several eras of decline and growth. An industrial hub and farming community, it played a role in the American Revolution. When the canal arrived, Waterloo reinvented itself into a vital transportation link that helped foster the new nation's first Industrial Revolution. The peacefulness of the canal belies the complex engineering required to integrate it into the village's footprint. Today, beautifully preserved colonial-era buildings complement pre-Civil War structures, Victorian mansions and twentieth-century edifices. Local author John Giles illuminates the constant ebb and flow of the history of Waterloo Village.

Book Synopsis The Immortal Games of Capablanca by : Fred Reinfeld
Download or read book The Immortal Games of Capablanca written by Fred Reinfeld and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another Reinfeld Classic We are pleased to release another book in the Fred Reinfeld Chess Classics series. The Immortal Games of Capablanca was – and continues to be – one of Reinfeld’s most popular books. A detailed biography of the third world chess champion introduces the 113 games. They are presented chronologically, with clear and instructive annotations. This 21st century edition has been revised and reformatted to meet the expectations of the modern chessplayer. This includes: (a) The original English descriptive notation has been converted to modern figurine algebraic notation; (b) Over 200(!) diagrams have added, along with more than a dozen archival photos; and (c) The Index of Openings now has ECO codes. Reinfeld’s annotations were also cross-checked by Stockfish 14, one of the most powerful engines available. When Stockfish had a different, meaningful evaluation from that of Reinfeld’s, the engine’s suggestion is indicated by “S14:” followed by the specific line. As in our other “21st Century Editions,” and with the exception of the occasional supplement by Stockfish, Reinfeld’s original text has been preserved. Follow the life and games of the brilliant Cuban world champion in Reinfelds’s timeless classic The Immortal Games of Capablanca.
