Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a father’s abrupt arrest, his wife and children must leave their comfortable London home for a small cottage that sits near a bustling railway. While the mother struggles to make ends meet, siblings Roberta (nicknamed Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis adapt to their gloomy present with hopes of a brighter future. Bobbie is the oldest of three middleclass children thrust into poverty after their father is falsely imprisoned. She and her siblings, Peter and Phyliss, learn to embrace their new surroundings including the busy railway station. The children are frequent visitors of the local hub, engaging in an array of innocent yet spirited adventurers. Throughout their stay, they befriend multiple passengers, one of whom may be the key to their father’s freedom. The author creates an authentic portrayal of real-world conflict and consequences. Despite countless challenges, the children manage to find unique opportunities in the face of adversity. They are presented as resourceful and self-sufficient protagonists whose ingenuity makes them the heroes of their own story. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Railway Children is both modern and readable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dawkin's militant atheism is well known; his profound faith less well known In this book, atheist philosopher Eric Steinhart explores the spiritual dimensions of Richard Dawkins’ books, which are shown to encompass: · the meaning and purpose of life · an appreciation of Platonic beauty and truth · a deep belief in the rationality of the universe · an aversion to both scientism and nihilism As an atheist, Dawkins strives to develop a scientific alternative to theism, and while he declares that science is not a religion, he also proclaims it to be a spiritual enterprise. His books are filled with fragmentary sketches of this ‘spiritual atheism’, resembling a great unfinished cathedral. This book systematises and completes Dawkins’ arguments and reveals their deep roots in Stoicism and Platonism. Expanding on Dawkins’ ideas, Steinhart shows how atheists can develop powerful ethical principles, compelling systems of symbols and images, and meaningful personal and social practices. Believing in Dawkins is a rigorous and potent entreaty for the use of science and reason to support spiritually rich and optimistic ways of thinking and living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first installment of David Peace's electrifying Red Riding Quartet vividly brings to life a gritty, dangerous working class city tormented by a series of brutal murders. Nineteen Seventy-Four follows Eddie Dunford, the newly minted crime correspondent for the Yorkshire Post. His first story is about Clare Kemplay, a young girl recently found brutally murdered. While the police department and other crime reporters at the newspaper believe it's an isolated incident, Eddie finds a pattern between Clare's disappearance and those of other girls from a few years earlier. Despite his better judgment, and against the advice of others, he starts to dig deep. What he finds is a nightmare of corruption, violence, blackmail, and obsession that ultimately leads to a shocking, explosive conclusion.
