Download or read book Queens of Afrobeat written by Dotun Ayobade and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Queens of Afrobeat, the women of Afrobeat music--a unique blend of jazz, soul, highlife, and West African rhythms--are finally given the recognition they deserve. This extensive study takes a multifaceted view of the storied lives of the women behind Fela Kuti's activist music. Dotun Ayobade's wide-ranging research pulls from interviews with surviving queens, ethnographic narratives, the exploration of newspaper archives, and close readings of album covers, photographs, and promotional materials to help us see and understand the women who surrounded Fela Kuti on stage and in everyday life. Not only were these artists crucial performers and backup singers for Kuti's most important compositions, they also played key roles in his activism and campaigns of social protest against the Nigerian government in the 1970s. Drawing on previously untapped material, Queens of Afrobeat weaves together an intricate narrative of women's participation in popular music. The stories of these remarkable women transform and uniquely personalize our understanding of the politics and performance of one of the major modern musical traditions in Africa.

Download or read book Problems of direct Labour Projects procured in Lagos State written by Blessing Adegoke and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2010 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.0, Bowen University, language: English, abstract: Direct labour system is one of the several options of procurement used for project delivery process and records shows that it is the oldest procurement system and has been in use in Nigeria far back as the colonial era. It is very prominent in most countries and researchers described it as a system whereby a developer plans and organizes the project delivery process, carries out the design, the planning and procurement of resources and the construction of a project using client employed supervisory staff and labour. This type of system is regarded as in-house because client’s staffs as different from contractor’s staffs carry out the project delivery process and activities. Idoro, Iyagba and Odusami (2007) asserted that direct labour is mainly used for government projects. The use of the system is a good development in construction because it does not result in high staff strength and overhead costs in the Nigerian construction industry.

Book Synopsis Nigeria's Third-Generation Literature by : Ode Ogede
Download or read book Nigeria's Third-Generation Literature written by Ode Ogede and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the evolution and characteristics of Nigeria’s third-generation literature, which emerged between the late 1980s and the early 1990s and is marked by expressive modes and concerns distinctly different from those of the preceding era. The creative writing of this period reflects new sensibilities and anxieties about Nigeria’s changing fortunes in the post-colonial era. The literature of the third generation is startling in its candidness, irreverence as well as the brutal self-disclosure of its characters, and it is governed by an unusually wide-ranging sweep in narrative techniques. This book examines six key texts of the oeuvre: Maria Ajima’s The Web, Okey Ndibe’s Foreign Gods, Inc., Teju Cole’s Open City, Chika Unigwe’s On Black Sisters Street, Lola Shoneyin’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s The Thing Around Your Neck. The texts interpret contemporary corruption and other unspeakable social malaise; together, they point to the exciting future of Nigerian literature, which has always been defined by its daring creativity and inventive expressive modes. Even conventional storytelling strategies receive revitalizing energies in these angst-driven narratives. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of contemporary African literature, Sociology, Gender and women’s studies, and post-colonial cultural expression more broadly.

It focuses on the core areas of legislative functions – lawmaking, appropriation, oversight and representation – in examining the achievements, challenges and prospects of the legislature. This is particularly important because Nigeria being the most populous country in Africa is a crucial bastion of democratic governance in the region. Therefore, conducting deep diagnostics of the federal legislature as the custodian of popular mandate and the anchor of accountability offered immense opportunity for learning that would catalyze further institutional reforms and democratic consolidation.

Book Synopsis The Systems Work of Social Change by : Cynthia Rayner
Download or read book The Systems Work of Social Change written by Cynthia Rayner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues of poverty, inequality, racial justice, and climate change have never been more pressing or paralyzing. Current approaches to social change, which rely on industrial models of production and power to "solve" social problems, are not helping. In fact, they are designed to entrench the status quo. In The Systems Work of Social Change, Cynthia Rayner and François Bonnici draw on two hundred years of history and a treasure trove of stories of committed social changemakers to uncover principles and practices for social change that radically depart from these approaches. Rather than delivering "solutions," these principles and practices focus on the process of change itself. Through rich storytelling and lucid analysis, Rayner and Bonnici show that connection, context, and power sit at the heart of the change process, ensuring broader agency for people and communities to create social systems that are responsive and representative in a rapidly changing world. Simple yet profound, this book distills a timely set of lessons for practitioners, leaders, scholars, and policymakers.
