Book Synopsis Brazzà, a Life for Africa by : Maria Petringa
Download or read book Brazzà, a Life for Africa written by Maria Petringa and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-01-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1905, scandalous reports of torture in France's overseas colonies rocked Paris. Brazza was sent to investigate. Born an Italian nobleman, Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza had spent twenty years exploring equatorial Africa as a French naval officer. His attempts to reconcile African development and prosperity with French colonial policy had already cost him his career. Now his commitment to expose colonial abuses would cost him his life. Already divided by the anti-Semitic currents of the Dreyfus Affair, France was about to discover the reality of its administration in central Africa. The European economy's greed for rubber had created a hidden world of slave labor and violence, with scenes that inspired the "horror" of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Brazza, A Life for Africa is the first English-language biography of a man who lived an extraordinary life. Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza was a nobleman, a naval cadet, an explorer, a glamorous idol to 19th-century Parisians, a colonial governor, and a human rights investigator, as well as a husband, father, and friend. By turns thrilling, romantic, and tragic, Brazza's story blends exotic adventures with all-too-human emotions and experiences.

Download or read book Land of Tears written by Robert Harms and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prizewinning historian's epic account of the scramble to control equatorial Africa In just three decades at the end of the nineteenth century, the heart of Africa was utterly transformed. Virtually closed to outsiders for centuries, by the early 1900s the rainforest of the Congo River basin was one of the most brutally exploited places on earth. In Land of Tears, historian Robert Harms reconstructs the chaotic process by which this happened. Beginning in the 1870s, traders, explorers, and empire builders from Arabia, Europe, and America moved rapidly into the region, where they pioneered a deadly trade in ivory and rubber for Western markets and in enslaved labor for the Indian Ocean rim. Imperial conquest followed close behind. Ranging from remote African villages to European diplomatic meetings to Connecticut piano-key factories, Land of Tears reveals how equatorial Africa became fully, fatefully, and tragically enmeshed within our global world.
Book Synopsis The End of Slavery in Africa by : Suzanne Miers
Download or read book The End of Slavery in Africa written by Suzanne Miers and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive assessment of the end of slavery in Africa. Editors Suzanne Miers and Richard Roberts, with the distinguished contributors to the volume, establish an agenda for the social history of the early colonial period--hen the end of slavery was one of the most significant historical and cultural processes. The End of Slavery in Africa is a sequel to Slavery in Africa, edited by Suzanne Miers and Igor Kopytoff and published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 1977. The contributors explore the historical experiences of slaves, masters, and colonials as they all confronted the end of slavery in fifteen sub-Saharan African societies. The essays demonstrate that it is impossible to generalize about whether the end of slavery was a relatively mild and nondisruptive process or whether it marked a significant change in the social and economic organization of a given society. There was no common pattern and no uniform consequence of the end of slavery. The results of this wide-ranging inquiry will be of lasting value to Africanists and a variety of social and economic historians.

Download or read book Black France written by Dominic Thomas and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[W]ithout a doubt one of the most important studies so far completed on literature in French grounded in the experiences of migrants of sub-Saharan African origin." —Alec Hargreaves, Florida State University France has always hosted a rich and vibrant black presence within its borders. But recent violent events have raised questions about France's treatment of ethnic minorities. Challenging the identity politics that have set immigrants against the mainstream, Black France explores how black expressive culture has been reformulated as global culture in the multicultural and multinational spaces of France. Thomas brings forward questions such as—Why is France a privileged site of civilization? Who is French? Who is an immigrant? Who controls the networks of production? Black France poses an urgently needed reassessment of the French colonial legacy.
Book Synopsis Morocco’s Africa Policy by : Yousra Abourabi
Download or read book Morocco’s Africa Policy written by Yousra Abourabi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-05-03 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the advent of the reign of Mohammed VI in 1999, Morocco has deployed a new continental foreign policy. The Kingdom aspires to be recognized as an emerging African power in its identity as well as in its space of projection. In order to meet these ambitions, the diplomatic apparatus is developing and modernizing, while a singular role identity is emerging around the notion of the "golden mean". This study presents, on an empirical level, the conditions of the elaboration and conduct of this Africa policy, and analyzes, on a theoretical level, the evolution of the Moroccan role identity in the international system.

Book Synopsis Kingship and State by : Christopher Wrigley
Download or read book Kingship and State written by Christopher Wrigley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-16 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precolonial kingdom of Buganda, nucleus of the present Uganda state, has long attracted scholarly interest. Since written records are lacking entirely until 1862, historians have had to rely on oral traditions that were recorded from the end of the nineteenth century. These sources provide rich materials on Buganda in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but in this 1996 book Christopher Wrigley endeavours to show that the stories which appear to relate to earlier periods are largely mythology. He argues that this does not reduce their value since they are of interest in their own mythical right, revealing ancient traces of sacred kingship, and also throwing oblique light on the development of the recent state. He has written an elegant and wide-ranging study of one of Africa's most famous kingdoms.
