Book excerpt: Face à une mondialisation, devenue irréversible, face aux inégalités croissantes entre pays et continents, l'Ecole a un rôle primordial à jouer dans le développement des idéaux de compréhension internationale, de justice et de solidarité. L'objectif de ce travail a été de comprendre comment elle a pris en charge cette nécessaire ouverture sur les pays du Sud, depuis 1945. l'Afrique a été le fil conducteur : comment le milieu éducatif a-t-il réagi face aux grands évènements qui la concernaient ? Quelle place a-t-il faite à la connaissance de ses cultures et de ses problèmes ? Comment a-t-il conçu les relations Nord-Sud ? Au delà de " l'éducation au développement ", cette étude a suscité aussi une réflexion sur les objectifs de l'enseignement et sur le métier d'enseignant. Elle a été menée dans l'académie de Grenoble, de la Maternelle à l'Université. Elle a inclus tous les niveaux du système éducatif, de la politique ministérielle aux initiatives des établissements, tous les aspects de " l'éducation au développement ", de l'information en France aux relations avec les pays du Sud. Elle doit beaucoup aux témoignages des " acteurs " (enseignants, élèves, étudiants). Elle a mis en relief, aussi, la collaboration des associations de solidarité internationale. Grâce à tous ces efforts, le dialogue Nord-Sud a pénétré dans l'Ecole surtout depuis les années 70 mais il n'y occupe encore qu'une place marginale. Au tournant du siècle, l'éducation au développement se révèle plus nécessaire que jamais et a besoin d'un nouveau souffle.
