Book excerpt: The Secrets Are Out The life story of a Christ-following girl had been written. It was sent to the publisher just a week before the horrific event on January 15, 2018. Her story of surviving abuse, to holding fast to her faith, to be an overcomer was now forever changed. Her older sister, Louise Turpin, had been arrested on child abuse charges including shackling, starving, and torturing her own children. The case that shocked the world brought a flood of repressed memories to Elizabeth Flores, the sister of Louise Turpin. Her story now had to be infused with the secrets that started to come out. Secrets of a sisterhood. Secrets buried long ago could no longer remain buried.
Book Synopsis The Gospel According to Flannery O'Connor by : Jordan Cofer
Download or read book The Gospel According to Flannery O'Connor written by Jordan Cofer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jordan Cofer examines the influence of the Bible upon Flannery O'Connor's fiction. While there are many studies exploring how her Catholicism affected her fiction, this book argues that O'Connor is heavily influenced by the Bible itself. Specifically, it explicates the largely undocumented ways in which she used the Bible as source material for her work. It also shows that, rhetorically, many of O'Connor's stories (and/or characters) are based upon biblical models. Furthermore, Cofer explains how O'Connor's stories engage their biblical analogues in unusual, unexpected, and sometimes grotesque ways, as her stories manage to convey essentially the same message as their biblical counterparts. Throughout O'Connor's work there are significant biblical allusions which have been neglected or previously undiscovered. This book acknowledges her biblical source material so readers can understand the impact it had on her fiction. Cofer argues that readers can better appreciate her work by examining how her stories are often grounded in specific biblical texts, which she similarly distorts, exaggerates, and subverts, in order to shock and teach readers. Simply put, O'Connor doesn't merely reference these biblical stories, she rewrites them.

Download or read book Poets, Princes, and Private Citizens written by Joseph M. Knippenberg and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1996 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original and insightful essays was written by teachers seeking to restore literature as a powerful teaching tool in the undergraduate classroom. This book rejects postmodern theorizing, opting instead to assert that great poets, playwrights, and novelists self-consciously intended to impart compelling moral and political lessons. The essays focus on fundamental questions such as: What is justice? What does it mean to be a good human being? What are the strengths and weaknesses of a particular form of government? and, How are we to understand and resolve the tensions between private affections and public responsibilities? This is important reading for anyone concerned about the impact of postmodern literary analysis.

Book excerpt: When the Duke of Purbeck throws a house party to celebrate his daughter's twenty-first birthday and present her with a family heirloom, nobody expects that the weekend will end in murder. The fabled Belsingham pearls have a history steeped in blood and slaughter dating back more than a century—and now it seems they've claimed another life, when the interfering and opinionated Professor Coddington is found dead in the library with the pearls clutched in his hand. It looks like a robbery gone wrong, but then why didn't the thief take the necklace? And how did he escape unnoticed, given that half the guests were seemingly wandering around the house at the time of the murder? House guest Freddy Pilkington-Soames has enough on his plate already, with a lecherous nuisance of a grandfather to keep an eye on, a girlfriend his mother disapproves of, and an ex-girlfriend who's engaged to another man but shows signs of changing her mind. But with a killer on the loose in the house, it's time to forget his own troubles and rise to the occasion—or risk a scandal that could destroy the reputation of his whole family.
Book Synopsis The Story of Narrative Preaching by : Mike Graves
Download or read book The Story of Narrative Preaching written by Mike Graves and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years ago the one thing that could be said about sermons was they were biblical. Unfortunately, they were sometimes tedious too. Narrative preaching aimed to fix that, advocating for a dynamic experience of the text over against a static lecture. Preaching could be like the parables of Jesus, intriguing and compelling. The Story of Narrative Preaching is the story of seven students who are enrolled in Professor Freeman's preaching course. Once a new trend, narrative preaching is now older than most of them. As Professor Freeman notes, two things went wrong with narrative styles: over time the church became biblically and theologically illiterate, and the promised stress on experience didn't always measure up to the weight of the gospel. Readers are invited to sit in on the class, to reflect on the expositional nature of preaching and to experience the stories of some modern storytellers--Flannery O'Connor, Alice Walker, and others--to see what they might teach us about narratives of depth. In the end we discover what may be the most important word in preaching.
