Book excerpt: In this paper we obtain the asymptotic distribution of restricted likelihood ratio tests in mixed linear models with a fixed and finite number of random effects. We explain why for such models the often quoted 50:50 mixture of a chi-s quared random variable with one degree of freedom and a point mass at zero does not hold. Our motivation is a study of the use of wavelets for lack-of-fit testing within a mixed model framework. Even though wavelet shave received a lot of attention in the last say 15 years for the estimation of piecewise smooth functions, much less is known about their ability to check the adequacy of a parametric model when fitting the observed data. In particular we study the testing power of wavelets for testing a hypothesized parametric model within a mixed model framework. Experimental results show that in several situations the wavelet-based test significantly outperforms the com-petitor based on penalized regression splines. The obtained results are also applicable for testing in mixed models in general, and shed some new insight into previous results.

Generally, random effects are often assumed to be normally distributed in the context of mixed models. However, in the mixed-effects logistic model, the violation of the assumption of normally distributed random effects may result in inconsistency for estimates of some fixed effects and the variance component of random effects when the variance of the random-effects distribution is large. On the other hand, summary statistics used for assessing goodness of fit in the ordinary logistic regression models may not be directly applicable to the mixed-effects logistic models. In this dissertation, we present our investigations of two independent studies related to goodness-of-fit tests in generalized linear mixed models. First, we consider a semi-nonparametric density representation for the random effects distribution and provide a formal statistical test for testing normality of the random-effects distribution in the mixed-effects logistic models. We obtain estimates of parameters by using a non-likelihood-based estimation procedure. Additionally, we not only evaluate the type I error rate of the proposed test statistic through asymptotic results, but also carry out a bootstrap hypothesis testing procedure to control the inflation of the type I error rate and to study the power performance of the proposed test statistic. Further, the methodology is illustrated by revisiting a case study in mental health. Second, to improve assessment of the model fit in the mixed-effects logistic models, we apply the nonparametric local polynomial smoothed residuals over within-cluster continuous covariates to the unweighted sum of squares statistic for assessing the goodness-of-fit of the logistic multilevel models. We perform a simulation study to evaluate the type I error rate and the power performance for detecting a missing quadratic or interaction term of fixed effects using the kernel smoothed unweighted sum of squares statistic based on the local polynomial smoothed residuals over x-space. We also use a real data set in clinical trials to illustrate this application.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A common problem in modeling the response surface in most systems, and in particular in a mixture system, is that of detecting lack of fit, or inadequancy, of a fitted model of the form E(Y) = Xg, in comparison to a model of the form E{Y) = Xe, + X B postulated as the true model. One method for detecting lack of fit involves comparing the value of the response observed at certain locations in the factor space, called "check points," with the value of the response that the fitted model predicts at these same check points. The observations at the check points are used only for testing lack of fit and are not used in fitting the model. It is shown that under the usual assumptions of independent and normally distributed errors, the lack of fit test statistic which uses the data at the check points is an F statistic. When no lack of fit is present the statistic possesses a central F distribution, but in general, in the presence of lack of fit, the statistic possesses a doubly noncentral F distribution. The power of this F test depends on the location of the check points in the factor space through its noncentrality parameters. A method of selecting check points that maximize the power of the test for lack of fit through their influence on the numerator noncentrality parameter is developed. A second method for detecting lack of fit relies on replicated response observations. The residual sum of squares from the fitted model is partitioned into a pure error variation component and into a lack of fit variation component. Lack of fit is detected if the lack of fit variation is large in comparison to the pure error variation. This method can be generalized when "near neighbor" observations must be substituted for replicates. In this case, the test statistic (assuming independent and normally distributed errors) has a central F distribution when the fitted model is adequate and a doubly noncentral F distribution under lack of fit. The arrangement of near neighbors is seen to affect the testing procedure and its power.
