Book excerpt: "Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal are known for an architecture that privileges inhabitants’ freedom and pleasure through generous, open designs. The Paris-based architects opened their 2015 lecture at Harvard University with a manifesto: study and create an inventory of the existing situation; densify without compressing individual space; promote user mobility, access, choice; and most importantly, never demolish. Freedom of Use reflects on these core values to present a fluid narrative of Lacaton and Vassal’s oeuvre, articulated through processes of accumulation, addition, and extension. The architects describe built and unbuilt work, from a house in Niger made of little more than branches; to the expansive Nantes School of Architecture; to a public square in Bordeaux where, after months of study, their design solution was: do nothing."--Sternberg Press website (viewed Sept. 29, 2015)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating guide to building with transparent plastics. Prominent international avant-garde architects such as Shigeru Ban and Herzog & de Meuron frequently use transparent plastic for their structures. Transparent plastic seems ephemeral and thus captures the spirit of the times.
Download or read book Lacaton & Vassal written by Anne Lacaton and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monographic book designed by Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, is published in conjunction with their exhibtion at the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine. It gathers all the projects designed by their firm into thematic groups (beginnings, landscape, dreams, freedom, Inhabiting, transformation, enchanting and city) and weaves them into a story that challenges their proposals. Their approach, involving an in-depth reflection on the ethical dimension of architecture, is founded upon both the generosity of the dwelling and the pleasure of the dweller. In denying the obvious, they seek in its place what is essential and specific to each situation and context. Lacaton and Vassal propose architecture that allows us greater freedom.

Book excerpt: Lacaton & Vassal's idea of architecture is the research of a low-cost, though generous in space, form of housing. The concept of reuse and re-invention becomes the driving principle in planning, with the aim of overlapping new intentions to pre-existing systems, while maintaining the right balance between past and future; in the certainty that the well-being, dreams and expectations of contemporary society can be met through these principles. 100 colour images

Book Synopsis Ecologies of Inception by : Simone Ferracina
Download or read book Ecologies of Inception written by Simone Ferracina and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to increasing levels of planetary pollution, waste generation, carbon dioxide emission and environmental collapse, Ecologies of Inception re-thinks potentiality—an object’s ability to change—in architecture and design. The book problematizes the still-prevailing modern paradigm of design practice: the technical tabula rasa, a tendency to begin from scratch and use raw, amorphous, and obedient materials that can be easily and effectively manipulated, facilitating a seamless and faithful embodiment of intentions. Instead, the philosophy of design developed in the text prompts—through a variety of case studies, thinkers, and disciplines—a collective reconsideration of value, dissociating it from the projects and signatures of any one author or generation. Whereas the merits of up-cycling and circular design are canonically defined vis-à-vis status-quo economic and socio-cultural orthodoxies, this project unpacks the theoretical assumptions that underpin these practices, showing that they perpetuate the same biases and exclusions that generate waste in the first place. As an alternative, the book introduces a nodal and exaptive paradigm for design: a conceptual and methodological toolset for engaging the durational and anthropocenic materiality of the third millennium, and for radically prioritizing practices of maintenance, reuse, care, and co-option. This approach, which is inspired by (and builds upon) evolutionary biology, technological disobedience, queer use, adaptive reuse, experimental preservation, and improvisational practices such as collage, adhocism, bricolage, and kit-bashing, refuses to reduce pre-existing material substrates to abstract lists of properties or featureless lumps, encountering them on their own terms—as situated individuals and co-authors. Ecologies of Inception will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, educators, and professional architects and designers interested in sustainable design and seeking to develop conceptual and design tools commensurate with the magnitude and urgency of the climate emergency.
Download or read book Critical Care written by Angelika Fitz and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How architecture and urbanism can help to care for and repair a broken planet: essays and illustrated case studies. Today, architecture and urbanism are capital-centric, speculation-driven, and investment-dominated. Many cannot afford housing. Austerity measures have taken a disastrous toll on public infrastructures. The climate crisis has rendered the planet vulnerable, even uninhabitable. This book offers an alternative vision in architecture and urbanism that focuses on caring for a broken planet. Rooted in a radical care perspective that always starts from the given, in the midst of things, this edited collection of essays and illustrated case studies documents ideas and practices from an extraordinarily diverse group of contributors. Focusing on the three crisis areas of economy, ecology, and labor, the book describes projects including village reconstruction in China; irrigation in Spain; community land trust in Puerto Rico; revitalization of modernist public housing in France; new alliances in informal settlements in Nairobi; and the redevelopment of traditional building methods in flood areas in Pakistan. Essays consider such topics as ethical architecture, land policy, creative ecologies, diverse economies, caring communities, and the exploitation of labor. Taken together, these case studies and essays provide evidence that architecture and urbanism have the capacity to make the planet livable, again.
