Book Synopsis Communists and Labour Ñ The National Left-Wing Movement 1925Ð1929 by : Lawrence Parker
Download or read book Communists and Labour Ñ The National Left-Wing Movement 1925Ð1929 written by Lawrence Parker and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Left-Wing Movement (NLWM), set up by the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) in 1925-26 to pull the Labour Party rank and file towards Communist politics, was one in which Marxists worked in a largely open fashion to promote specific programmatic principles. This publication sheds new light on how the early CPGB approached its work inside the Labour Party and points to a more variegated picture of the CPGB in the mid-to-late 1920s as still capable of producing rational and principled responses to the class struggle - albeit, in the case of the NLWM, partially flawed and unsuccessful ones. The NLWM had another goal forced upon it of protecting Communists and their sympathisers from a Labour leadership intent on expelling and disaffiliating such elements in a pursuit of respectability. This monograph seeks to qualitatively measure the impact of that disaffiliation process on the CPGB, the NLWM and Labour sympathisers.

Book Synopsis Choosing the Labour Leader by : Timothy Heppell
Download or read book Choosing the Labour Leader written by Timothy Heppell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The change in the method of selecting the Labour Party leader, from an elite parliamentary ballot to a mass participatory Electoral College, which occurred in 1981 was ideologically motivated. However, the strategy of the Left to enhance the accountability of the incumbent party leader to the wider Labour movement, and the Left's chances of securing an ideological succession in the party leadership failed. Drawing together debates on the method of party leadership selection and the ideological positioning of leadership candidates, this book examines each leadership election since 1963 as a means of charting the decline of the left within the Labour Party. Given the bypassing of the Electoral College to appoint Gordon Brown in 2007, and the debates surrounding his authority and legitimacy as Labour Party leader thereafter, this book offers a comprehensive and timely examination of Labour Party leadership elections from Wilson to Brown which will be invaluable for scholars of British Politics and the history of the Labour Party.

Volume XV maintains this standard of original and thorough scholarship. Each entry is written by a specialist drawing on an array of primary and secondary sources. The biographical essays engage with recent historiographical developments in the field of labour history. The scope of the volume emphasises the ethnic and national diversity of the British labour movement and neglected political traditions.

Book Synopsis The Labour Party by : Steven Fielding
Download or read book The Labour Party written by Steven Fielding and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blair government is much less novel and distinctive than has been assumed by most commentators who have, Steven Fielding argues, taken too much of its rhetoric at face value. Setting recent developments in a broader historical context, this major new text on the British Labour Party provides a balanced account of its present state and how it got there. The Labour Party is forever changing - though generally within long-established parameters. 'New' Labour is but the latest example of this process.

Book Synopsis Labour and the Countryside by : Clare V. J. Griffiths
Download or read book Labour and the Countryside written by Clare V. J. Griffiths and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-05-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common reputation of the British Labour Party has always been as 'a thing of the town', an essentially urban phenomenon which has failed to engage with the rural electorate or identify itself with rural issues. Yet during the inter-war years, Labour viewed the countryside as a crucial electoral battleground - even claiming that the party could never form a majority administration without winning a significant number of seats across rural Britain. Committing itself to a series of campaigns in rural areas during the 1920s and 30s, Labour developed a rural and often specifically agricultural programme on which to attract new support and members. Labour and the Countryside takes this forgotten chapter in the party's history as a starting point for a fascinating and wide-ranging re-examination of the relationship between the British Left and rural Britain. The first account of this aspect of Labour's history, this book draws on extensive research across a wide variety of original source material, from local party minutes and trade union archives to the records of Labour's first two periods in government. Historical, literary, and visual representations of the countryside are also examined, along with newspapers, magazines, and propaganda materials. In reconstructing the contexts within which Labour attempted to redefine itself as a voice for the countryside, the resulting study presents a fresh perspective on the political history of the inter-war years.
