Download or read book Ontario's Labour Market written by Ontario. Labour Market and Research and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in the job mix of Ontario's economy and their implications for skills development. It reviews a number of trends in Ontario's economy that have affected demand in the labour market during the past 28 years. It also provides an analysis of how the mix of jobs in Ontario has evolved over time in response to these changes in the economy. It uses a projection to the year 2000 of trends in the demand for labour across occupations to offer a number of insights into future shifts in the occupational mix and their implications for the educational and training requirements of the work force. In addition, it presents a projection of labour supply growth and changes in the demographic characteristics of the work force during the decade ahead, along with a review of sources of new labour force entrants with advanced levels of education and training. It concludes with a discussion of labour market issues that will become much more important in the 1990s.

Download or read book Information in the Labour Market written by James B. Davies and published by Published for the Ontario Economic Council by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uses a simple model of information gathering to generate policy recommendations concerning education in Ontario, especially at the post-secondary level. The schools are viewed as helping students discover jobs matched to their abilities, and policy prescriptions are offered from that standpoint. After examining earlier economic models of education - seeing it in terms of human capital and signalling - the authors analyse their informational model. In the light of the three theories of education, they then proceed to examine the appropriate role of government in the education market, and offer their policy recommendations. In addition, trends in the structure of education over the last two decades are studied and explained from the economic point of view. They argue that too much has been spent on formal education and not enough on on-the-job-training, but the answer is not more government intervention or vocationalism. Education policy should encourage free choice and an increasing ability to match interests or skills with jobs. Vocationalism merely hinders the latter and endangers economic well-being in the long term.

It focuses on explanations for the rapid expansions of the service sector, and documents the shift from goods to services. It also examines the issue of nonstandard employment in Canada, and focuses on the skill content of jobs. Book Synopsis OECD Employment Outlook 2024 The Net-Zero Transition and the Labour Market by : OECD
Download or read book OECD Employment Outlook 2024 The Net-Zero Transition and the Labour Market written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition to net-zero emissions by 2050 will have profound impacts on the labour market and the jobs of millions of workers. Aggregate effects on employment are estimated to be limited. But many jobs will be lost in the shrinking high-emission industries, while many others will be created in the expanding low-emission activities. This edition of the OECD Employment Outlook examines the characteristics of the jobs that are likely to thrive because of the transition (“green-driven jobs”), including their attractiveness in terms of job quality, and compares them to jobs in high-emission industries that tend to shrink. The cost of job displacement in these latter industries is assessed along with the trajectories of workers out of them towards new opportunities, and the labour market policies that can facilitate job reallocation. Particular attention is devoted to upskilling and reskilling strategies to facilitate workers’ transition into fast-growing, green-driven occupations. The distributive impacts of climate-change mitigation policies are also examined, with a focus on carbon pricing and options to redistribute its tax revenue to those most impacted. As usual, the first chapter of the Outlook assesses recent labour market developments (including wage trends), but also provides an update of the OECD Job Quality indicators.
