Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper documents the large cross-country differences in labor institutions that make them a candidate explanatory factor for the divergent economic performance of countries and reviews what economists have learned about the effects of these institutions on economic outcomes. It identifies three ways in which institutions affect economic performance: by altering incentives, by facilitating efficient bargaining, and by increasing information, communication, and trust. The evidence shows that labor institutions reduce the dispersion of earnings and income inequality, which alters incentives, but finds equivocal effects on other aggregate outcomes, such as employment and unemployment. Given weaknesses in the cross-country data on which most studies focus, the paper argues for increased use of micro-data, simulations, and experiments to illuminate how labor institutions operate and affect outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic performance of a national economy, as shown by indicators such as the rate of unemployment and inflation, is heavily dependent on the operation of its external and internal labour markets. From this standpoint the book focuses on the functions of internal labour markets and their interaction with external labour markets, comparing those of the Japanese and Western styles. The differing mechanisms of internal labour markets are examined by a strong range of international contributors from Japan, North America and Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To what extent can different forms of social capital help immigrants make headway on the labour market? An answer to this pressing question begins here. Taking the Netherlands and Germany as case studies, the book identifies two forms of social capital that may work to increase employment, income and occupational status and, conversely, decrease unemployment. New insights into the concepts of bonding and bridging arise through quantitative research methods, using longitudinal and crosssectional data. Referring to a dense network with 'thick' trust, bonding is measured as family ties, co-ethnic ties and trust in the family. Bridging is seen in terms of interethnic ties, thus implying a crosscutting network with 'thin' trust. Immigrant Performance in the Labour Market reveals that although bonding allows immigrants to get by, bridging enables them to get ahead"--Publisher's description.

This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews theory, research, and methods of analyzing the labour market and employment. Free and flexible labour markets can automatically end both labour surpluses (unemployment) and labour shortages (over-employment). However, in practice various things may impede wage flexibility, freedom of contract, and labour mobility and thus the balancing of supply and demand. Protectionist minimum wage tariff barriers and other obstacles to labour market entry and competition are one major general cause of unemployment. Technological and other business-economic development is a second major general cause while contraction or recession in economies is a third. The book argues that broadly dividing unemployment into obstructional, developmental, and contractional types is more accurate and useful than distinguishing between frictional, structural, and cyclical forms (the conventional economic classification). It also argues that is inadequate to analyze labour markets or explain employment and unemployment in purely economic terms. Even in the most developed, differentiated and autonomous market capitalist economies, external socio-cultural, personality, and physical-organic environmental factors still impinge on labour markets and employment. A general theme of the book is the importance of bringing in empirical data from the real world to support or disprove theories. Contents: 1. THEORIES OF THE LABOUR MARKET & EMPLOYMENT: AN OVERVIEW 2. THE LABOUR MARKET & EMPLOYMENT IN MODERN SOCIETY 3. THE NATURE & CAUSES OF UNEMPLOYMENT 4. THE POLITICAL & LEGAL ENVIRONMENT 5. TRADE UNIONS & WAGE DETERMINATION 6. EDUCATIONAL, FAMILY, & LEISURE INFLUENCES 7. EMPLOYMENT ATTITUDES, MOTIVES, & BEHAVIOUR

Book excerpt: In the six years since the appearance of the first edition of Stephen Smith's book, labour economics has become a more firmly entrenched subject on the curriculum. Previously regarded as a subsection within industrial economics, there are now very few universities that do not devote a course to it in its own right. The focus of topics covered within it has also altered - the notion of human capital has now become much more central and microeconomic considerations are now as widely studied as macroeconomic phenomena. The second edition will address these changes and give greater centrality to microeconomics to reflect current course teaching. With superb features such as case studies, end of chapter questions and further reading sections, this new edition will prove popular with all students of labour economics.
