Book excerpt: In most studies of British decolonisation, the world of labour is neglected, the key roles being allocated to metropolitan statesmen and native elites. Instead this volume focuses on the role played by working people, their experiences, initiatives and organisations, in the dissolution of the British Empire, both in the metropole and in the colonies. How central was the intervention of the metropolitan Left in the liquidation of the British Empire? Were labour mobilisations in the colonies only stepping stones for bourgeois nationalists? To what extent were British labour activists willing and able to form connections with colonial workers, and vice versa? Here are some of the complex questions on which this volume sheds new light. Though convergences were fragile and temporary, this book recapture the sense of uncertainty that accompanied the final decades of the British Empire, a period when radical minorities hoped that coordinated efforts across borders might lead not only to the destruction of the British Empire but to that of capitalism and imperialism in general. Exploiting rare primary sources and adopting a resolutely transnational approach, our collection makes an original contribution to both labour history and imperial studies.

Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, the world's governments have decreased state welfare and thus increased the number of unprotected 'informal' or 'precarious' workers. As a result, more and more workers do not receive secure wages or benefits from either employers or the state. This book offers a fresh and provocative look into the alternative social movements informal workers in India are launching. It also offers a unique analysis of the conditions under which these movements succeed or fail. Drawing from 300 interviews with informal workers, government officials and union leaders, Rina Agarwala argues that Indian informal workers are using their power as voters to demand welfare benefits from the state, rather than demanding traditional work benefits from employers. In addition, they are organizing at the neighborhood level, rather than the shop floor, and appealing to 'citizenship', rather than labor rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixth revised edition of Industrial Relations and Labour Laws captures the significant developments that have taken place in the realm of labour laws and industrial relations in the recent past. The most notable development in the legislative sphere is the amendment in the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 in 2010. In the judicial sphere, there has been a marked shift in the approach of the Indian judiciary in the area of discipline and disciplinary procedure. Moreover, new norms/principles have been evolved to determine the classification of a person as a workman, provide relief in case of illegal/wrongful termination of service of workmen, determine notice period for strike/lock-out in public utility services and for regularization of services of daily, temporary, casual or contract workers. Extensively revised and updated in line with the changes in the law, this edition also gives a new and more holistic dimension to the subject of labour--management relations. • Part I provides the contextual and constitutional framework of labour law and an overview of industrial relations. • Part II deals with the trade union movement, employers’ organizations and laws relating to trade unions, collective bargaining, unfair labour practices and victimization. • Part III deals with regulation of industrial disputes, persuasive, coercive and voluntary processes for settlement of industrial disputes, grievance procedure, government’s power of reference, laws relating to instruments of economic coercion, management of discipline, laws relating to change in conditions of service and lay-off, retrenchment, transfer and closure. • Part IV examines laws relating to standing orders. • Part V is on workers’ participation in management. This edition will serve as a comprehensive textbook for students of LLB, LLM, MBA, MSW, MPA, CS, and masters and diploma programmes in personnel management, industrial relations and labour law. It is indispensable for personnel managers, law officers, lawyers, trade union officials/ members, officials of labour department and members of the labour judiciary.

Book excerpt: Social stigmatization is a virtual curse imposed on certain Indian social sections by the colonial government as part of their contextual political strategies by late nineteenth century. The so-called denotified tribes (formerly known as ex-criminal tribes) in Indian society occupy this state-made category. According to the latest survey reports, India has 198 groups belonging to nomadic and denotified tribes: unorganized, scattered and utter nobodies. Social justice is alien to them and economic disempowerment eventually resulted in slavery, bonded labour and poverty. Public welfare measures pay scant attention to the issue of reform and rehabilitation of these sections and, they are made to suffer from an identity crisis today. Most of these communities are split under reserved categories: Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes. The work tries to present a narrative detailing the conditions of denotified tribes during colonial and post-colonial India. And the undeclared wish in doing so is to seek the attention of those in policy-making and decision-making bodies under the Indian government.
