Book Synopsis Informal Labor, Formal Politics, and Dignified Discontent in India by : Rina Agarwala
Download or read book Informal Labor, Formal Politics, and Dignified Discontent in India written by Rina Agarwala and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, the world's governments have decreased state welfare and thus increased the number of unprotected 'informal' or 'precarious' workers. As a result, more and more workers do not receive secure wages or benefits from either employers or the state. This book offers a fresh and provocative look into the alternative social movements informal workers in India are launching. It also offers a unique analysis of the conditions under which these movements succeed or fail. Drawing from 300 interviews with informal workers, government officials and union leaders, Rina Agarwala argues that Indian informal workers are using their power as voters to demand welfare benefits from the state, rather than demanding traditional work benefits from employers. In addition, they are organizing at the neighborhood level, rather than the shop floor, and appealing to 'citizenship', rather than labor rights.

Book Synopsis Housing and Politics in Urban India by : Swetha Rao Dhananka
Download or read book Housing and Politics in Urban India written by Swetha Rao Dhananka and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing adequate housing in an increasingly urbanised world is a major challenge of current times. This book puts together a compelling story based on fine-grained analysis of housing processes, as lived by slum-dwellers and their voice-bearers. It situates the lived experience of claiming adequate housing within informal transactions and negotiations of patronage networks vis-à-vis the formal institutional opportunities and closures of Indian democracy. In doing so, this research extends an innovative array of conceptual and methodological tools to grasp the context in which housing claims succeed and fail. This book contributes by responding to critical areas of social movement scholarship and by displaying community engagements and tactical strategies to bring about transformative change to claim adequate housing and resist co-opting forces for socially sustainable housing futures.
Download or read book Housing India written by Urmi Sengupta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-15 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique book on housing in India, 11 leading scholars come together to offer a critical appraisal of current housing policies and programmes in India. Contributions contextualise and conceptualise the Indian housing paradigm with an integrated perspective, covering diverse regions and themes related to housing, such as: Financial constraints to adequate housing in India Policy implementation dynamics of national housing programmes in India, using evidence from Madhya Pradesh Indigenous urbanism and mass housing programmes in Aizawl, Mizoram Studies of the peripheralisation of low income housing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Chennai, Tamil Nadu The chapters in the book show how each theme affects the other, and suggest policy directions on the basis of past successes and failures. They seek new vocabularies to describe the processes of housing over 1.3 billion Indians—particularly capturing urban formations in the small and big cities of India, where housing plays the most dominant role. The book offers varied perspectives representing diverse regions and themes, together presenting a microcosm of housing problems and solutions in India. Housing India will be a key resource for researchers and practitioners of housing and social policy, urban sociology, built environment, urban planning, public policy, development studies and economics. It will also appeal to housing professionals aiming to obtain qualifications and wanting a broad understanding of the housing provision in India. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Housing Policy.
Book Synopsis India Working by : Barbara Harriss-White
Download or read book India Working written by Barbara Harriss-White and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By drawing on her extensive fieldwork in India and on the adjacent theoretical literature, Barbara Harriss-White describes the working of the Indian economy through its most important social structures of accumulation. Successive chapters explore a range of topics including labour, capital, the state, gender, religious plurality, caste and space. Despite the complexity of the subject, the book is vivid and compelling. The author's intimate knowledge of the country enables the reader to experience the Indian local scene and to engage with the precariousness of daily life. Her conclusion challenges the prevailing notion that liberalisation releases the economy from political interference and leads to a postscript on the economic base for fascism in India. This is an intelligent book, first published in 2002, by a distinguished scholar, for students of economics, as well as for those studying the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by Antonio Gramsci's writings on the history of subaltern classes, the authors in Mapping Subaltern Studies and the Postcolonial sought to contest the elite histories of Indian nationalists by adopting the paradigm of 'history from below'. Later on, the project shifted from its social history origins by drawing upon an eclectic group of thinkers that included Edward Said, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Derrida. This book provides a comprehensive balance sheet of the project and its developments, including Ranajit Guha's original subaltern studies manifesto, Partha Chatterjee, Dipesh Chakrabarty and Gayatri Spivak.
