Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Psychobiology, Volume 2, Specialized Laboratory Techniques in Neuropsychology and Neurobiology is intended for the beginning ""student"" in physiological, neuro-, bio-psychology, or whatever label one wishes to attach to the exciting interdisciplinary field which weds the brain and behavior. In contrast to Volume 1, somewhat more emphasis is given in the selection of topics to a number of difficult behavioral methods that are used frequently by individuals in the more traditional neurosciences. The book begins with a discussion of the measurement of behavioral activity. This is followed by separate chapters on techniques such as electric shock motivation; aversive learning; methods of assessing the behavioral effects of drugs; long-term intravenous infusions; and perfusion of different parts of the brain. Subsequent chapters deal with the assay of pharmacologically active substances; the split-brain technique; using microknives in brain lesion studies and the production of isolated brain-stem islands; the functional decortication technique; and recording evoked potentials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Psychobiology, Volume 3, Advanced Laboratory Techniques in Neuropsychology and Neurobiology is devoted in large measure to specialized techniques that are widely used in the fields of psychobiology and neurobiology. The experimental methods described form a companion to those presented in Volumes 1 and 2. Many of the procedures presented hinge directly on a mastery of the more rudimentary techniques dealt with in the earlier volumes. The emphasis in the content of this book is on one facet of neurobiology, the mammalian central nervous system. The central or peripheral processes that affect this system in a rat or larger laboratory animal constitute the principal focus of this series. This is due in large part to the enormous amount of research carried out with higher species and the generalizations that, it is hoped, may be drawn to the nervous system of the human. Topics discussed include neuronal connectivity; chemical lesioning of indoleamine pathways; evaluating sensation in animals after lesions, treatment with drugs, electrical stimulation, cooling, or radical changes in environment or development; and sleep in animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume of the series Human Brain Function: Assessment and Rehabilitation we cover the area of how brain function is assessed with behavioral or neuropsycholog ical instruments. These assessments are typically conducted by clinical neuropsy chologists or behavioral neurologists, and so we made an effort to present the somewhat differing approaches to these two related disciplines. Clinical neuropsy chologists are psychologists who typically utilize standardized tests, while behav ioral neurologists are physicians who generally assess brain function as part of the clinical neurological evaluation. Both approaches have much to offer. The basic assumption of neuropsychological assessment is that the brain is the organ of behavior, and therefore, the condition of the brain may be evaluated with behavioral measures. Neuropsychological tests are those measures found by re search to be particularly sensitive to alterations in brain function. An adequate neuropsychological test is a procedure that can be related to some objective mea sure of alteration in brain function. Over the years, these objective measures have changed, but generally involve documentation through direct observation of brain tissue, or through histological, pathological, neuroimaging, or other laboratory procedures. The methods described in the first two volumes of this series describe the neuroimaging procedures that are often used in the validation of neuropsycho logical tests.
