Book excerpt: Previous studies indicated that the radiolytic degradation of simple organic materials in dilute aqueous solution (cog-97-406, rc-1931) resulted in the production of stoichiometric quantities of hydrogen, carbon dioxide and relevant inorganic ions, x, according to the equation: c sub(a) h sub(b) x + n h sub(2) o -radiation-> a co sub(2) + (1/2b + n) h sub(2) + x. no net radiolytic production of oxygen was observed in both degassed and oxygen saturated solutions, and any oxygen present initially was rapidly consumed through the radiolytic process. in this work, dilute (10 sup(-3) mol dm sup(-3)) solutions of the benzyltrimethylammonium ion have been gamma-irradiated to high doses (4200 kgy) under degassed and oxygenated conditions. the benzyltrimethylammonium ion is the functional group of many strong base anion ion exchange resins used in nuclear applications. the radiolytic degradation of the benzyltrimethylammonium ion does not conform to the stoichiometric equation given above at a dose which would have resulted in the complete destruction of the organic compounds described in the previous report. instead the formation of additional carbon containing compounds under both oxygenated and degassed condtions is postulated. in the absence of oxygen, a white, carbon-rich precipitate is formed which apparently has a high radiation resistance over the dose studied. in the presence of oxygen, again, not all the carbon inventory appears as co2, but the carbon-rich compound is soluble. clearly, the radiolytic breakdown of the benzyltrimethylammonium ion is considerably different to that for other simple organic compounds.

Download or read book Radiation Degradation in EPICOR-2 Ion Exchange Resins written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Low-Level Waste Data base Development -- EPICOR-II Resin/Liner Investigation Program funded by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission is investigating chemical and physical conditions for organic ion exchange resins contained in several EPICOR-II prefilters. Those prefilters were used during cleanup of contaminated water from the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station after the March 1979 accident. The work was performed by EG G Idaho, Inc. at the Idaho Engineering Laboratory. This is the final report of this task and summarizes results and analyses of three samplings of ion exchange resins from prefilters PF-8 and -20. Results are compared with baseline data from tests performed on unirradiated resins supplied by Epicor, Inc. to determine the extent of degradation due to the high internal radiation dose received by the organic resins. Results also are compared with those of other researchers. 18 refs., 23 figs., 7 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthetic ion exchange resins came into use in the Soviet Union in the 1950's, and domestic anion exchange resins based on quaternary amine groups have long been used in the Russian nuclear industry. These resins are similar to resins used in the West, and include pyridine-based resins, as well as the more conventional aryl polymers with substituted methyl amines. (Slide 1) The sensitivity of these amines to reaction with nitric acid and other oxidants has been a concern in Russia as in the West, and numerous laboratory studies have been conducted on the reactions involved. Several incidents involving pressure or temperature excursions have provided incentives for such studies. (Slide 2) This report briefly summarizes this work. A report by the Russian authors of this paper providing greater detail is to be issued as a U.S. Dept. of Energy document. Additionally, a second report by these authors, describing new studies on anion exchange resin safety, will also be issued as a DOE report. The separation of plutonium, neptunium, etc. from other materials by ion exchange requires rather strong nitric acid (6-8 M). In some systems, such as the processing of 238Pu, intense ionizing radiation may also be present during ion exchange separation. As a result, it is necessary to consider not only thermal hydrolysis and oxidation and their effects on the resin, but also radiolysis. All of these were investigated in the Russian studies.
Book Synopsis EPICOR-II Resin Degradation Results from First Resin Samples of PF-8 and PF-20 by :
Download or read book EPICOR-II Resin Degradation Results from First Resin Samples of PF-8 and PF-20 written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 28 March 1979 accident at Three Mile Island Unit 2 released approximately 560,000 gallons of contaminated water to the Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Buildings. The water was decontaminated using a demineralization system called EPICOR-II developed by Epicor, Inc. The Low-Level Waste Data Base Development - EPICOR-II Resin/Liner Investigation Project is studying the chemical and physical conditions of the synthetic ion exchange resins found in several EPICOR-II prefilters. This report summarizes results and analyses of the first sampling of ion exchange resins from EPICOR-II prefilters PE-8 and -20. Results are compared with baseline data from tests performed on unirradiated Epicor, Inc. resins to determine if degradation has occurred due to the high internal radiation dose received by the EPICOR-II resins. Results also are compared with recent findings on resin degradation by Battelle Columbus Laboratories and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Analyses comparing test results of resins from EPICOR-II prefilters PF-8 and -20 with unirradiated resins obtained from Epicor, Inc. show resin degradation has occurred in some of the EPICOR-II resins examined. The mechanism of degradation is compared with work of other researchers and is consistent with their findings. The strong acid cation resins (divinylbenzene, styrene base structure) are losing effective cross-linking along with scission of functional groups and are experiencing first an increase and eventually a decrease in total exchange capacity as the absorbed radiation dose increases. The phenolic cation resins (phenol-formaldehyde base structure) show a loss of effective cross-linking and oxidation of the polymer chain. Analyses of resins removed from EPICOR-II prefilters PF-8 and -20 over the next several years should show a further increase in degradation.
